GSM BSS
Crosstalk Monitoring

2 Overview

2 Overview
Users are likely to complain if crosstalk frequently occurs in the network. Identifying a crosstalk problem,
however, can be difficult if the information related to the crosstalk is not recorded in time. To solve this
problem, the Crosstalk Monitoring feature is introduced. This feature records the information about the
call during which crosstalk occurs in the log and provides an alarm mechanism specific to crosstalk.
With the Crosstalk Monitoring feature enabled, a call is automatically monitored to check whether
crosstalk occurs during the call. If crosstalk occurs, the information about the call, including the calling
number, called number, serving cell, occupied channel, and serving TRX, is recorded. In this way,
maintenance engineers can obtain the data that is crucial to problem identification without simulating the
conditions of the call.
In addition, this feature provides an alarm mechanism specific to crosstalk. That is, the number of
crosstalk occurrences in a BSC is periodically recorded. When the number of crosstalk occurrences
exceeds a predefined threshold, an alarm is generated. The purpose of the alarm mechanism is that a
network quality problem can be identified and solved before users complain about it. The crosstalk
monitoring mechanism applies to only the following speech coding schemes: FR, EFR, AMR_FR
(excluding 12.2 kbit/s), and AMR_HR (excluding 6.7 kbit/s and 7.4 kbit/s).
Note that this feature requires the cooperation of the TC and the BTS and that this feature can only be
used to detect the crosstalk that is caused by faults inside the BSS. It cannot be used to detect the
crosstalk that is related to the Um interface or the MSC.
The Crosstalk Monitoring feature has the following benefits:
z

Based on the alarm information, a speech quality problem can be identified soon after it occurs. The
network quality is improved by rectifying such problems.

The information about the call during which crosstalk occurs is recorded in the log. The recorded
information helps to identify the problem, thus improving the maintenance efficiency.

The CROCALTMTHRD parameter specifies whether to enable the Crosstalk Monitoring feature. The
feature is enabled when the CROCALTMTHRD parameter is set to a value other than 255. The enabling
of the Crosstalk Monitoring feature does not affect the overall performance of the BSC.

Crosstalk Monitoring

3 Principles

3 Principles
The implementation of the Crosstalk Monitoring feature is controlled by the BSC and is collaborated by
the TC and the BTS. The working principles of the Crosstalk Monitoring feature are described as follows:
A calling ID is filled in the idle bits of the FR, EFR, FAMR, HR, or HAMR speech frames. The BSC or TC
then determines whether the calling ID is the same as that saved at the BTS or TC. If the calling ID in the
code stream is different from the calling ID saved at the BTS or TC for a consecutive number of times
specified by the CROCALTMTHRD parameter, the BTS or TC determines that crosstalk occurs during
the call and sends a crosstalk monitoring report message to the BSC. On receiving the message, the
BSC records the information about the call, including the occupied Abis resources, occupied Ater
resources, serving BTS, serving cell, serving TRX, occupied channel, and occupied TC resources in the
log, and triggers the alarm mechanism specific to crosstalk. In this way, maintenance engineers can
easily obtain the information about crosstalk occurrences.
The Crosstalk Monitoring feature can be enabled only when TDM transmission is employed on all
interfaces of the BSS.

3.1 Obtaining Crosstalk-Related Information

Overview
The BSC must obtain the following crosstalk-related information for problem identification and
rectification:
z

Information about the desired speech signals and undesired speech signals

Information about BTS network connection

Crosstalk-related alarms

Information About the Desired Speech Signals and About the Undesired
Speech Signals
When the BTS or TC detects the occurrence of crosstalk, it sends a crosstalk monitoring report message
to the BSC. The BSC receives the message and records the information about the resources occupied
by the call, including the occupied Abis resources, occupied Ater resources, serving BTS, serving cell,
serving TRX, occupied channel, and occupied TC resources in the log.
The BSC records the calling ID of the desired speech signals and the calling ID of the undesired speech
signals. Based on the calling ID of the undesired speech signals, the BSC obtains information about the
undesired call and records the information in the log. The information about the undesired call includes
the serving TRX, occupied channel, crosstalk monitoring type, crosstalk occurrence time, and call index.

Information About BTS Network Connection

When crosstalk occurs during a call, only the information about the serving TRX and the occupied
channel regarding the call is recorded in the log at the BTS. A crosstalk problem or one-way audio
problem, however, may also result from a fault in the establishment of the BTS network connection. The
BSC, therefore, must record the information about the BTS network connection regarding the desired
speech signals and about the BTS network connection regarding the undesired speech signals. The
BSC obtains the information about the BTS network connection through the OML over the Abis interface,
and records the information on the OMU.
Frequent reporting of the information about the BTS network connection may result in the congestion
over the Abis interface. The BSC and BTS must use a flow control strategy to avoid the Abis congestion
caused by information reporting. The GetBtsNetTblTimeThd parameter is introduced to specify an
interval at which the information about the BTS network connection is reported. Within the interval
specified by the parameter, the BSC sends the BTS three different messages to obtain the TMU

upper-layer network connection of the BTS, SCP upper-layer network connection of the BTS, and DSP
upper-layer network connection of the BTS respectively.
The information element (IE) "ucChanno" is added to the messages between the BSC and BTS to
synchronize the crosstalk information recorded in the log and the actual crosstalk information. The BSC
sends a message with IE "ucChanno" to the BTS and then receives a response from the BTS. It obtains
the value of IE "ucChanno" filled in the response, and saves the IE to the log. In addition, the BSC saves
the received information about the BTS network connection to the OMU board in the form of a binary file.
Currently, the information about the BTS network connection can be sent to the BSC either through a
single frame or through a multi-frame. When the information about the BTS network connection is sent to
the BSC through a multi-frame, the BSC buffers the multi-frame, compresses the multi-frame after
receiving the entire message, and saves it to the OMU board in the form of a binary file.

Crosstalk-Related Alarms
The BSC measures the number of crosstalk occurrences in the BSC every 60 minutes.
If the number of crosstalk occurrences in 60 minutes is greater than the value of the
SPEECHCHANALARMTHRES parameter, the BSC reports a BSS Internal Voice Channel Abnormal
alarm. The alarm parameter "Voice Abnormal Type" is set to crosstalk, and the number of times the voice
is abnormal is set to the number of crosstalk occurrences. If the number of crosstalk occurrences in the
next 60 minutes is smaller than or equal to the value of the SPEECHCHANRESUMEALARMTHRES
parameter, the BSC clears the BSS Internal Voice Channel Abnormal alarm. In this case, the alarm
information does not include the number of crosstalk occurrences. Note that the BSS Internal Voice
Channel Abnormal alarm does not need to be cleared if it is not reported and that the BSS Internal Voice
Channel Abnormal alarm cannot be repeatedly reported.

3.2 Starting and Stopping Crosstalk Monitoring

Starting and stopping crosstalk monitoring indicates the operations performed by the BSC and BTS to
start and stop crosstalk monitoring. It does not indicate the enabling or disabling of the Crosstalk
Monitoring feature.
The following operations can be performed to enable the Crosstalk Monitoring feature:
z

Run the MML command SET BSCBASIC on the LMT. In this step, set the CROCALTMTHRD
parameter to a value other than 255.

Run the MML command SET GCELLBTSSOFT on the LMT. In this step, set the ITEMINDEX
parameter to 19, and the ITEMVALUE parameter to 254.

The SET GCELLBTSSOFT command is an internal command.

Table 3-1 lists the messages that notify the BSC and BTS to start or stop crosstalk monitoring.
