The Deity of Jesus Christ and its significance to faith

Christian Nuesa
Thundersaint@yahoo

- Tonight we shall continue with John 3:16. We shall look at Begotten and Believes.

[Recite 3:16]
Passage
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him
shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

“For God [Father] so [houtos, in this manner] loved [agapao, regarded the welfare of] the
world [the object of His wrath], that He gave [sacrifice for the elect] His only [no other
brother] begotten [eternal] Son [Christ], that whoever [regardless of race, age, sex, religion]
believes [faith] in Him [as God] shall not perish [destraction], but [contrast] have [that’s now]
eternal life [quality of life].

Review
- Last week we learned look at the contrast between John 3:16’s Eternal Life and Perish.

- That the essence of Eternal Life is to have a relationship with the Father as REAL sons.
- We are real sons because we are place in the familial relationship of God as sons
because we are literally born by the Holy Spirit.

- This relationship is a present Father and son relationship.

- As Jesus calls the Father, ABBA; we call the Father ABBA as well. The same
Father and son relationship as the only begotten Son.

- Then we look at the word Perish.. this means the destraction of sinner’s life.
- It is the destruction of life by
- the lost of God and His benefits!
- the lost of Heaven!
- the lost of Earth!
- And the gain difficulties.
- It is an eternal lost and misery without rest.
- That forever God will not remember Mercy
- Forever God will not remember Love.
- Forever God’s heart is shut to their cries.
- Forever this condition is irrivocable.

- And finally we look at the word believe. for me to be able to explain what does it mean to
believe in the Son I needed to teach about the…
- NAME OF GOD in Exodus 3:14
- When Moses raised the question “What is His Name?” We learned last week that this is
NOT a question of WHAT but WHO. “WHO IS HE among many gods?” is the real
question.
- God’s answer:
- “I AM WHO I AM”, it basically means “whatever I choose to reveal to you is
WHO I AM.”

- FEW Examples of His revelations:

- I AM jealouse (I am who Iam)
- I AM Holy (I am who I am)
- God wants to be known, addressed, or referred to on WHO HE IS.

- Therefore, His name is not a label (like Bob, Lisa, Jerry) but a description of
WHO HE IS! In other words, His attributes.

- And what He revealed to Moses that time is “HE EXIST, AND CONTINEW TO
EXIST. HE IS PRESENT AND ALWAYS PRESENT”

- He did this using Hebrew word Eheyeh (I AM) and Yahhoveh (HE IS).

- And Yahhoveh, the NAME his peple would use to refer to Him. A memorial
name.

Background

- The Ancient Israel was captured by many nations.

- They were under Babylon, Assyrians, then the Persians. During the Persian empire the
international Language is Aramaic.

- Alexander the great defeated the Persian empire and Hellinise (or converted to Greek culture)
the all the nations he captured. One of them is Israel.

- At the end of the Greek Empire, the Roman Empire came. In this time Greek is now the
Internaltionla language. And the Hebrew language is a dead language (but still being used for
religious purposes; much like Latin that is still used by the catholics for their religion)

- Therefore Israel were speaking Aramaic as their local language and Greek as the language for
trade.

- It is likely that Jesus spoke Aramaic and He used Greek when he was teaching a crowed and
interacting with different people (Ex. the Samaritan woman, the Roman Soldier, Tax collectors,
etc).

- That’s why the new testament is written in Greek. The writers are Greeks speakers.

- Basically, Israel is now a different crowed as the one in Egypt in the book of Exodus.

Preface
- In this time, there is this person, a Jew and He lives in Nazareth where there is nothing good
comes out (John 1:46). It is one of the city of the Ancient Israel.

- He was a Carpenter (Cref. Mark 6:3). At this time a Carpenter does not mean you are poor.
He is likely to be in the middle class.

- He was not educated in the schools of the prophets, or at the feet of the rabbin; not only did not
travel for learning, as the philosophers did, but did not make any use of the schools and
academies in his own country (John 7:14-16).
- Compare that to..
- Moses who was educated in Egypt
- Paul who was educated by Gamaliel, a well honored teacher in the ancient
Israel.
- He is suspected by some of His neighbors to be a son outside the marriage union of His mother
(John 8:41). Therefore some reject Him as a Jew instead they believd Him to be a Samaritan
(John 8:48).

- Samaritans are a race mixture of Jewish and Heathen blood. At this time these ancient Jews
are racist. They hate the Heathen nation. Therefore if you are mix, they don’t like you.

- On top of that, He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that
we should desire him (Isaiah 53:2).

- In other words He is not a typical guy girls would date! And He was not a seminarian?
A no, no to Grace!

- Who is He? His name is Jesus. And He used greek words Ego Eimi as His straight-forward
self-reference and self-identification of WHO HE IS.

- LITERALLY SPEAKING IN GREEK HE SAID EGO EIMI.

- Ego Eimi is understood as “I AM” in English.

1. Ego Eimi
1.1 What is Ego Eimi exactly?
- Ego Eimi are Greek words, as I said, and is not the equavalent of the Eheyeh and
Yahhoveh words of the Old Testatmen.

- Let me show you why?

- Ego = means I, first person singular.
- Eimi = is I AM.

- Therefore, if we do a word by word translation, Ego Eimi is “I, I AM”.

- This statement is a little bit different from Eheyeh of Hebrews, which is simply
“I AM”.

- Therefore whenever Jesus says Ego Eimi, He is not quoting Exodus 3:14’s Eheyeh,
which is “I AM”.

1.1.1 Proper Tranlation of Ego Eimi

- Eimi is simply I AM. But if you say Ego Eimi you intensify the I.
If I were to write Ego Eimi in English, it would be this way:
- I AM (and I word I woud be bold font). Just to give it a strong
emphasis.

- It also has the same idea as “He himself or You yourself or I myself, am”. You are
basically making an emphasis on your self.

- Let me give you an example:

- The blind man Jesus healed
- John 9:8 Therefore the neighbors, and those who previously saw him as a
beggar, were saying, “Is not this the one who used to sit and beg?”
- John 9:9 Others were saying, “This is he,” still others were saying, “NO, but
he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the one.”

- The I am here is Ego Eimi.

- This man who can now see is not saying “I’m the one”. But “I AM the one”. It is
also something like this. I, myself is that one.

- Do you how he intensifies His claim?

1.2 What does Jesus mean by Ego Eimi?

- Why is it the Jesus is making a strong emphasis on himself. What is He saying?

- Remember that when God said I AM, He is not saying His name is Bob. This “I AM” is
an attribute of God.

- Could it be that when Jesus uses Ego Eimi, He is saying that He exist and continue to
exist. The one who is present and always present?

- Well, I don’t know. The specific phrase ego eimi occurs 24 times in the Gospel of
John. I did not study each one of those 24 occurrances.

- But 23 Ego Eimi in the book of John belongs to Jesus and I (one) Ego Eimi to the blind
man.

1.3 How did Jesus used Ego Eimi?

1.2.1 With predicate - Seventeen of these Jesus’s Ego Eimi is followed by a clear
predicate.
- John 6:35, "I am the living bread".. I myself, is the living bread.
- John 10:11, "I am the good shepherd".. I myself, is the good shephered.

- Do think Jesus is saying “I exist and I continue to exist”. I am present and

always present”? NO.

- He is making an INTENSIVE CLAIM that He Himself, the bread of life and the
good shephered.

1.2.2 With reference to a third person. Sometimes He used this with a reference to a
third person.
John 4:25 The woman *said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming (He who is
called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.”
John 4:26 Jesus *said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”

- There is no He on verse 26. The He is implied that’s why when the tranlators
put it in english, the He is ilatic stating that it is not in Greek. Nonethese a third
person is implied in Greek.

- The Ego Eimi here is used to INTENSIFY A CLAIM the Jesus is the Messiah.

1.2.3 As an “absolute” I AM - Most importantly, Jesus used these as "absolute" I AM

statements 7 (seven) times. These would be John 8:24, 8:28, 8:58, 13:19, 18:5, 18:6,
and 18:8.
-Let us look at one example..
[Goto Ref]
John 8:56 “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was
glad.”
John 8:57 So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have
You seen Abraham?”
John 8:58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was
born, I am.”

- The I am here again is Ego Eimi in present tense. This is a statement of

existance before Abraham.

- In Exodus 3:15, God was saying He is present at the time of Abraham, Isaace,
and Jacod.

- As you notice Jesus is present with the Jews here. He was talking to them. So
He was there with them.

- Jesus said before Abraham, He is already present. This also means: He is

present at the time of Abraham, at the time of Isaac, at the tiem of Jacod.

- Jesus NOW, is saying that He exist and continue to exist. The one who is
present and always present.

- And He said it with a STRONG CLAIM.

- What is their reaction? Did they understood what He mean?

[Goto Ref]
John 8:59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid
Himself and went out of the temple.

- Why because this is a blasphemous statement to them.

- Jesus who is a man is saying HE HAS EXISTANCE THE SAME WITH
THE GOD OF HEBREW S. Unacceptable to the Jews.

- And Jesus used Ego Eimi as an absolute I AM 7 time. Therefore 7 times He

claimed, with a strong emphasis, THAT HE CLAIMED EQUALITY WITH GOD.

- NOTICE: That Jesus existance is His own existance. Independent from the
Father but equal with Him.

- ONLY GOD IS EQUAL TO GOD.

- Some verses Christ putting Himself at the same level as God.
o John 5:17 – Equal in work
o John 5:19 – Equal in ability
o John 5:21 – Equal in giver of life
o John 5:22 – Equal in authority
o John 5:23 – Equal in honor.

2. The proofs
- Now this remains to be a claim. Jesus claimed to be equal to God strongly. But where is the
proof? There has to be proofs that He is God!

- Well we do. What I have here is not sorted and not complete list. But I think I ahve enough.

The God of the OT is all-knowing

2.1 Jesus knows things that are hidden

The God of the OT is not limited by nature

2.5 Jesus Defies Nature BY (doing the unnatural)
The God of the OT healed the Israelites who were bitten if they look at the bronze snake
on the cross.
2.5.1 Healing

God says, “Jesus is accursed”; and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by
the Holy Spirit.
The God of the OT controled the animals to go into Noah’s Ark
2.5.4 Controled Fish to go into the net of the fishermans
John 21:6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat
and you will find a catch.” So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in
because of the great number of fish.
The God of the OT all of sudden appeared to Abraham by the oak tree.
2.5.6 Jesus all of a sudden appeared to His disciples inside a closed room.
John 20:19 ¶ So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and
when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus
came and stood in their midst and *said to them, “Peace be with you.”

The God of the OT took the life of the first born son of Egypt
2.5.7 Took the life of a fig tree
Matt. 21:19 Seeing a lone fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing
on it except leaves only; and He *said to it, “No longer shall there ever be any
fruit from you.” And at once the fig tree withered.
The God of the OT gave life to Adam
2.5.8 He raised the dead (Jesus gave life to Lazarus)
John 11:43 When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice,
“Lazarus, come forth.” (Cref. John 5:28-29)

The God of the OT is everywhere present

2.6 Jesus was in more than one place at the same time when He was on earth as a man
(CRef. Matt 18:20,Matt 28:20):
2.6.1 He was present with Nathaniel but physically He was somewhere else.
John 1:48 Nathanael *said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and
said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw
you.”

who were seated; likewise also of the fish as much as they wanted.
John 6:12 When they were filled, He *said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover
fragments so that nothing will be lost.”

The God of the OT manifested Himself in light

2.8 Jesus appeared to Paul in blasing light (Ezekiel 1:26-28)
Acts 22:6 And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto
Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.
Acts 22:7 And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why
persecutest thou me?
Acts 22:8 And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of
Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.
1Cor. 15:8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due
time.

The God of the OT has infinite wrath

2.9 Jesus paid the infinite wrath of God.
John 19:30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!”
And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

3. The only begotten Son

[Goto Ref]
John 3:16
- Jesus strongly claimed that He exist and continue to exist; He is present and always present.

- This has an implication that there was no anytime that He did not exist, nor there will be a time
that He will seize to exist.

- This is equality with Father and He demonstrated abilities to prove that He is God.

3.1 monogenes
- Begotten is to bring into existance or to bring forth. Example is giving birht to a child.
Or success begets further success.

- It is true that begotten implies that you have a beginning. But Jesus being God, the
word begotten must not be understood that Jesus has a beginning.

- How shall we understand begotten then. How is begotten used here?

- Just a reminder, in first teaching I explained to you what does it mean by ONLY SON. I
left the begotten for my last teaching because this is were it belongs.

- The words “only begotten” in Greek is “monogenes (the combination of monos and
genos)”.
- Monos - It means “only” which I tackled on my first teaching.
- Genos - In english Begotten.

- monogenes is used here as only generated one. Generated; meaning to cause

something or someone to come or to arise.

- When you beget a child, your child has the characteristics of his parents.

- Therefore the use of begotten here is more than just to generate. It also cannotes the
one that has been generate has the characteristics of the Father. In other word Jesus
has the same nature as the Father.

- If Jesus has the same nature as God the Father, then Jesus is divine and eternal as
well. If Jesus is eternally God, then there was never a time He was literally begotten--
There was never ever a time that He has a beginning.
- Thefore the characteristics of Jesus were never ever received from the Father. The
word begotten is only telling us that Jesus has all the characteristics of the Father as His
very own eternal characteristics.

- This is the reason why Jesus can explain the Father as He is.
- John 1:18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in
the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.

- Therefore since Jesus was never really begotten in eternity, this word is figure of
speech to describe his nature, and not his beginning.

3.2. A Unit of Eternal Beings (God is Echad).

- Does this mean that we have two God’s? NO. The bible is clear, there is only ONE
GOD.
Ex. 9:14 For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart, and upon
thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like
me in all the earth.

- We learned that Father and His Son have the same and exact existance.

- The Father and His Son have no beginning and no end and both are accupying the
same eternity.

- Their existance do not depend on anything. It does not even depend on each other.
- Jesus is eternal alone and the Father is also eternal alone.
- Jesus existance is not cause and sustain by the Father and the Father is not
cause and sustain by His son.

- Does this mean we have TWO eternal beings here existing side by side? Actually 3
eternal beings existing side by side accupying the same eternity. God fills eternity
(verse?).

- The third person of God is also Eternal equally existing without the any cause and any
help from the Father and Son. He has the same exact existance as the Father and Son,
actually.
- Heb. 9:14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal
Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from
dead works to serve the living God?

- Thee separate Eternal Beings all capable of impossible things.. BUT united as one in
their function.
[Goto Ref]
Deut. 6:4 ¶ “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!
- The word one here is Hebrew Echad. It means a UNIT. This is different from
Yachid, which is one and only.

- Let me give you a picture of Echad.

[Goto Ref]
Gen. 2:23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my
flesh; She shall be called Woman,Because she was taken out of Man.”
Gen. 2:24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be
joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.
- The word one there is also Echad.

- Adam and Eve are both alive.. their existance does not depend on each other.
Two distinct persons, yet ONE as married couple.

- They are one unit; Husbond and wife as one (echad). And they are united in
their function as One.

- This is God. God is echad. And they are a family.

- They have each other. And before creation God is not alone.

- And there is no other God like this. Nor there will be any other God like this.
(Isaiah 41:?).

3. Believe in Him
[Goto Ref]
John 3:16
- To believe in Him is to believe on who He is EXACTLY OR PRECISELY.
- Who is He EXACTLY? He claimed, using intensified words
- That He is the Son of God.
- That He is the Messiah
- And most importantly, that He is equal with God, therefore, God Himself.

- Coversation with the Pharasees

[Goto Ref]
- John 8:23 And He was saying to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are
of this world, I am not of this world.

- In verse 23, Who is that from above?

John 1:1 ¶ In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God.
John 1:2 He was in the beginning with God.
John 1:14 ¶ And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His
glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

- Jesus is stating His nature here..

- John 8:24 “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe
that I am He [The one who came from above, v23], you will die in your sins.”

- Jesus is saying here, no matter who you are, no matter how long you’ve been a
Christian even, if you do not believe His claim, that He is the only Son of God, the
Messiah, and God himself, you will PERISH.

4. The significance to believers

- We live in a culture where we are surrounded by people who shouts with a loud voice that
Jesus is NOT GOD. THEY ATTACK WHO CHRIST IS. THE LATEST ATTACK IS DAVINCI
CODE, WHICH DENIES CHRIST DEITY.

- Therefore, what is the significance of Christ Deity to you? How much weight do you put on
that?
- Ask yourself this. If Chrsit is not God, then He would have failed to pay the infinite wrath of
God. If so, the He would have not risen from the dead. That to this day Jesus is still in Hell. IF
SO..

- True faith
[Goto Ref]
1Cor. 15:14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain.
1Cor. 15:17 and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.

- What Paul is saying here is, there is NO TRUTH TO WHAT WE BELIEVED IF HE WAS NOT
RAISED FORM THE DEAD. OUR FAITH IS COMPLETELY WORTHLESS.

- SINCE CHRIST IS GOD, AND INDEED HE EXHAUSTED THE WRATH OF GOD, AND SO
WAS RAISED FROM THE DEATH. THEREFORE WE ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO HAS
TRUE FAITH. THE REST ARE ALL FALSE AND WORTHLESS.

- WE ARE THE ONLY ONE WHO PREACHES A WORTHY FAITH. WE ARE THE ONLY ONE.

[Your read]
- John 3:16 ¶ “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever
believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

- This verse is not empty and not worthless. The Father sacrifice His only begotten Son so that
He can reconcile the world to Himself. Because that is what is best for them. To be reconciled
to Him.
- And He gave us the ministry of reconciliation,
2Cor. 5:19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting
their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

Therefore,

- JESUS, THE TRUE AND LIVING GOD, SAID GO THEREFORE AND MAKE DISCIPLES.

- ARE YOU CONTRIBUTING TO THIS CALL AS MUCH AS YOU SHOULD? OR YOU ARE
SIMPLY A CHURCH GOER ENJOYING NICE “FELLOWHIP”.

- HAVE WE FORGOTTEN WHY WE ARE STILL HERE? HAS EVANGELISM LOST IT’S
IMPORATANCE TO US?

- God and Saviour

- Allow me to talk a little bit about about of evangelism..

- We, Christians, proclaim that Jesus is Lord and Saviour. But unfortunately Lord in the present
time is not clear to those who Hear of our message.

- Lord according to our culture is someone who is having power, authority, and influence. Lord is
even a title given to someone who has a high position.

- But LORD in the bible means God.

- Unfortunately, these days the word Lord in the mouth of people does not convey that Jesus is
God.
- Many people have believe that Jesus is Lord and Saviour then later in SHOCK to hear that He
is God. And sometimes they have a hard time believing that He is.

- Do you think that all people who claims to be Christian believe the Jesus is God? NO. Oh, but I
am sure all of us believe that He is Lord.

- Therefore, it is best, accurate, and clear to say Jesus is God and Savior when you are
witnessing.

- JESUS’S NAME IN HEBREW IS YAHU’SHUAH, it means HE (GOD) SALVATION. That’s

WHO HE IS, EXACTLY.

- THEREFORE AS DAVINCI CODE, THE FALSE GOSPEL OF BARNABAS, JUDAS, AND

WHOEVER.. SHOUTS JESUS IS NOT GOD.. WE ARE TO SHOUT BACK THAT HE IS GOD
IN THE WAY WE LIVE AND THE WAY WE TELL OTHERS ABOUT HIM THAT HE IS WHO HE
SAYS HE IS: ETERNAL GOD.

-GROUP QUESTIONS:
1) ARE YOU WITNESSING AS MUCH AS YOU SHOULD?
2) DO YOU HESITATE TO WITNESS SOMETIMES? WHAT'S THE REASON FOR THIS?
3) DO YOU REGARD THEIR WELFARE IF YOU DON'T TELL THEM THE GOSPEL? THE
POINT: WITNESSING IS NOT ABOUT YOU BUT ABOUT THEM.
5) DO YOU HAVE HEART FOR THE LOST? LEADERS: ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO SEEK
THIS IN PRAYER.
4) DO YOU KNOW HOW TO WITNESS? DO YOU NEED TO IMPROVE? LEADERS: IF SO,
GET THEIR NAMES.
