Description of Activities and Setting

Friends, good morning! I know that your teacher has been talking with you
about how to build a classroom community over the past couple of weeks and
today we are going to build on that. Recently, your teacher talked with you
about what you needed to do on the bus. What is one of the most important
things you need to make sure you do on the bus? Follow the rules! Thats
absolutely right, you need to make sure you follow the rules. Today we are
going to talk more about rules and why they are important.
Today we are going to learn about classroom rules. We are going to discuss
why they are important, why we should follow them, and why teachers create
them for us.
Can anyone share with me some rules they know they must follow in
school? Students respond with answers such as, Raise your hand before you
speak! Dont talk when the teacher is talking!! etc. Those are all correct!
Great job. Why do we think these rules are important? Students will respond
with answers such as, So we can stay safe. So that we can learn. Etc.
Awesome! Those are all great reasons. Now that youve told me all the rules
you know, I want you to help me make a list.
Students will help the teacher make a list of classroom and school rules they
know and teacher will copy each statement onto the Smart Board. They will
pick one rule and teacher draws a picture of herself performing the rule.
Students will write one classroom rule on a sticky note and draw a picture of
themselves following this rule. The rule can be stated as it is on the wall chart
of rules or on their own words.

Reflection on lesson: The students did very well with this lesson. During these first few weeks of school, they had been
learning about building a classroom community and how to follow the rules. They were already fairly used to this type of
lesson, so they responded well to it! I was sort of nervous to begin with, but once I started teaching everything was fine! I
felt great at the end when the discussion went well and the students all worked very hard on their sticky notes.
