Introduction
According to the book entitled, Introducing English Semantics by Charles W. Kreidler,
Linguistic semantics is an attempt to explicate the knowledge of any speaker of a language
which allows that speaker to communicate facts, feelings, intentions and products of the
imagination to other speakers and to understand what they communicate to him or her (Kreidler
1998).
The analysation of this paper will solely base on the different types of meaning. There are at
least seven types of meaning (many linguists state their different categories of meaning) in
semantic according Geoffrey Leech (1974), those are:
1. Conceptual meaning (logical, cognitive, or denotative content)
It refers to the dictionary meaning which indicates the concepts. In reading we can find many
different words have the same conceptual meanings. Take the word walk as an example, the
conceptual meaning or the primary dictionary meaning is to move forward by placing one foot in
front of the other. There are also a few other words that, according to the dictionary, mean to
move forward on foot, etc.
2. Connotative meaning(what is communicated by virtue of what language refers to)
It refers to the associations that are connected to a certain word or the emotional suggestions
related to that word. The connotative meanings of a word exist together with the denotative
meanings. The connotations for the word snake could include evil or danger.
3. Social meaning (what is communicated of the social circumstances of language use)
It refers to the usage of language in and by society which has big proportions in determining the
meaning that certain speaker has to use and wants to convey, those factors include social class of
the speaker and hearer and the degree of formality. Only part of the social meaning of a
conversation is carried by words. Take saying hello or talking about the weather. Often such talk
has little dictionary meaning. It is a way of being friendly or polite.
4. Affective meaning (what is communicated of the feeling and attitudes of the speaker/writer)
It refers to the speakers feeling / attitude towards the content or the ongoing context.It is
important to remember that each individual will have a different affective meaning for a word.
As such, only the person using a word will be aware of the particular affective meaning that they
hold with the word. For example, we can discuss the word winter further. The word winter
denotatively refers to a time period during which either the northern or southern hemisphere is
furthest away from the sun.Different use of stress and intonation also provides a striking contrast
in the feelings and attitudes communicated through an utterance.

5. Reflected meaning (what is communicated through association with another sense of the
same expression)
It refers to terms which have more than one meaning surfaces at the same time, so there is a kind
of ambiguity. It is as if one or more unintended meanings were inevitably thrown back rather like
light or sound reflected on a surface. For instance, if I use the medical expression chronic
bronchitis, it is difficult for the more colloquial emotive meaning of chronic, 'bad,' not to intrude
as well. . . . Sometimes, such coincidental, 'unwanted' meanings cause us to change a lexical item
for another.
6. Collocative meaning (what is communicated through association with words which tend to
occur in the environment of another word)
It refers to the associations a word acquires on account of the meanings of words which tend
to occur in its environment.In other words, it is that part of the word-meaning suggested by the
words that go before or come after a word in question, for instance, heavy news (a piece of sad
news); heavy schedule (a very tight schedule); fast color (the color that does not fade); fast friend
(a reliable friend); fast woman (a lady of easy virtue), etc.
7. Thematic meaning (what is communicated by the way in which the message is organized in
terms of order and emphasis).
It relates to or constitutes a topic of discourse, the meaning that the word conveys is that of
something that is connected with the theme of something
Types 2-6 are also categorized as associative meaning.

It is the people from whom democratic governments draw strength and this administration is no
exception. That is why we have to listen to the murmurings of the people, feel their pulse,
supply their needs and fortify their faith and trust in us whom they elected to public office.
[applause]
In the statement above, the murmurings of the people pertains to the little
voices or common issues of the lower people that mostly couldnt notice by the
government. Feel their pulse meaning to associate itself to the people. These are
examples for Connotative Meaning.

Excerpt 2
As a lawyer and a former prosecutor, I know the limits of the power and authority of the
president. I know what is legal and what is not. [applause]
My adherence to due process and the rule of law is uncompromising.[applause]
You mind your work and I will mind mine . [applause and cheers]
In the line You mind your work and I will mind mine connotes that they should
not teach him to what he should do because he is an experienced lawyer and a
prosecuter, he knows what are the right things to do and he can make his own
decision.

Excerpt3
Let me remind in the end of this talk, that I was elected to the presidency to serve the entire
country. I was not elected to serve the interests of any one person or any group or any one class. I
serve every one and not only one. [applause] That is why I have adapted as an article of faith, the
following lines written by someone whose name I could no longer recall. He said: I have no
friends to serve, I have no enemies to harm. [applause] Prescinding therefrom, I
now ask everyone, and I mean everyone, to join me as we embark on this crusade
for a better and brighter tomorrow.
Better and brighter tomorrow
This is a Connotation to a progressive future or meaning there would be a
development to future if they will help him and support him in his Presidency term.
Since the speech is his Inagural Speech, he would leave a hopeful message to the

people that can also make them believe in him as the new President of the
Philippines.

President Dutertes Press Conference, Davao City August 21, 2016

Excerpt 1
...Now, if I do not mention the connect between the senator, was then a secretary of justice, and
her driver, how would you now explain? How would now I explain to the public the state of
things happened the partying, drugs and even cooking shabu went well, unbridled
unhampered because of the driver himself? Would you think that a driver of a a Department
of Justice employee could have allowed these things by all and himself? These illegal things
which you saw on TV almost everyday for about a month, do you think that without De Lima
giving him the authority to allow the inmates to do that? All of these could have only happened if
there was the go-signal from the head of the department, which is the secretary. [Barlaan?] Is that
his name? Yes, [Barlaan?]. He was also one of the bagmen. [inaudible] And secretary all of these
things happened under your nose and shabu was floating inside and it was being and
what was really painful and the reason why we knew and I know because they were trafficking
shabu from the inside...
Cooking shabu
This phrase is an example of a Connotative Meaning. Cooking may refer to
making a food or may use as replacement for preparing foods. The shabu is the
name of an illegal drug that is nationally wide spreading not just in the Philippines
but to all the other countries. This now means making shabu. The shabu was refer
as the food for those drug addicts because this is now their daily need. They cant
control their selves if they cant intake this drug.
Under your nose
This phrase has a Connotative Meaning. This phrase means that the situation or
event is within the reach. It uses the nose which the denotative meaning is a part of
the body that can smell. With this conceptual definition, you can imply that the
smell here is a little different from the original definition. The smell here symbolizes
the wrong doings or any smelly actions specifically the cooking of the shabu. The
word you or your also may connote something like possessiveness of the act or
the person is obliged or has a great responsibility with the actions that are
happening.
The shabu was Floating inside
The phrase is obviously not meant drugs to be floating but overflowing and
spreading enormously. Floats conceptual meaning is something doesnt touches the

ground. This also synonymous with flying which its conceptual meaning also
doesnt touches the ground. When it said the shabu was floating inside, it connotes
that the shabu are spreading so fast as like as how the wind swift

...Do you mean to say that you did not report it to your superiors? Or you allow these things to
happen by yourself only your authority and nobody elses? Then be prepared to be investigated
because I will charge you for negligence of duty or under the Revised Penal Code for conspiring
with these guys to precisely act the way they behaved there inside the prison. It could not have
happened without your connivance. It could only mean conspiracy...
Guys
This word is an example for the Social Meaning. The guys here refers to the
criminals that President Duterte hated the most. This may refer as informal use of
pronoun but this word refer to the criminals base on the speaker and the context

And I would like to inviteThere is somebody who told me that there was this UN expert that
Duterte is not doing enough to come to the Philippines, have a conference with me in public,
you can ask your questions all that you want to know but allow me to ask you also. You seemed
to be characterized by UN expert? Fine. I am just a simple trial lawyer so why dont you
come here and lets talk about what youre talking about...
UN expert
This is an example for the Affective meaning. UN stands for the United Nation.
The speakers emotion here is mad because he felt like he was insulted and judged
by the UN. The expert word here was used sarcastically.

...Now remember today we lost another policeman. On the average on the national scheme, we
lose about two on the average two or three police officers killed in drug operations. Now, I
want the law expert to come here and to count the numbers of death also incurred by
government with his fingers to guide him how many deaths are caused...
Law expert
This is also an example for Affective meaning. This is connected to the UN
Expert phrase. The Law expert pertains to the UN. It is also used in sarcasm way. His
law expert means the UN seems like an expert to the law but the truth is not.

Excerpt 4
PRESIDENT DUTERTE: Yes, Bigornia.
DORIS BIGORNIA (ABS-CBN): Good morning, sir.
PRESIDENT DUTERTE: You are the topnotcher. Always the first to raise your hand. It must
be a good exercise doing it. Go ahead.

BIGORNIA: Sir, De Lima had a press conference yesterday and she said that she is

willing to resign and be shot in front of you if your allegations are true. She said all your
evidence are fake, false, manufactured and perjured.
PRESIDENT DUTERTE: Same here. I said Id put it at stake. At the start of my term, I said, I
am willing to put at stake my honor, my life and the presidency itself. Nauna na ako. I am willing
to go. I said, go ahead, change me. Ive been telling the congressman, if I am lying, we had a
conference there for sometime, I said, You can impeach me.
She is lying through her teeth because now that she isYou know in all of her answers, she
was only telling about drugs, now she denied there are leads about drugs, but she never said true
or false about the driver. And the driver is the connect lahat naman sa loob sinasabi ang driver.
Lying through her teeth
This is an example for a Connotative Meaning. The phrase defines that De Lima
is lying within her own words because she cannot prove anything that she had said
against Duterte.

And then they said, Now I have the permission of the top honcho. So that is whyNow tell
me De Lima, when I testified in the Senate two years ago about the rice smuggling of this city
and at the behest of the BIR Commissioner Kim Henares and she said Rody in a call,
please help us in finding out who is behind this rice smuggling.
Top Honcho
This is Collocative. The denotative meaning of honcho is someone who is a boss
or a leader to a certain group of people. When it collocated to top, this now means
the boss of all the big bosses.

Excerpt 5
I am dead serious. If he will do it again and then I will shoot him. You steal seven billion of the
money of the people of the Republic of the Philippines and you think you can youll be alive

forever. I will take the cudgels . God, do not do it. I will never allow you to steal seven billion
of your taxes of the people, sinabi ko. Then Jinggoy Estrada said, Ano ang sinabi ninyo? It
was really in sarcasm. And I said, I will give you an answer you want to hear. Patayin ko yan.
Ill kill him.
Dead Serious
This is another Collocative. The word serious can simply mean he was thoughtful
about what he said. By adding Dead, it totally means that he was not just joking
around that he can really do what he said about shooting someone.
I will take the cudgels
This is Connotative. Cudgels denotes to a short heavy club. It can also use as a
verb as like to hit someone with a cudgel. But this phrases connotes that Mr.
President Duterte will be the one to capture or kill the criminals with his own hands.
Which also related to his first statement which he will be the one to shoot the
criminals.

Excerpt 6
REGALADO: Ah okay. Sir, next question, in this whole ano with De Lima, I wonder
what end do you or do you foresee in this whole thing? What will be the
end?
PRES. DUTERTE:

You know I was really appalled. I was horrified. I was the favorite

whipping boy, as the number one violator of human rights because of the so many
criminals killed and that matter was investigated by the UN. I do know for the n inth
time again and a rapporteur came here. So I told him: It is true tha t there are people

killed in police operations. And for that I assume full responsibility because Im the head.
Whipping Boy
This is actually Conceptual. It may look connotative but this denotes as
someone that is often blamed for problem caused by other people which can also
be found in dictionaries. The context also share the same definition with its
conceptual meaning.
Head
This is an example for the Reflected Meaning. It can be use as a part of a body
and also can be define as the leader of a certain group or any organization. Head
defined here as he is the leader among the policemen and the soldiers.

Deadly Fighting
This is an example for the Collocative Meaning. Fighting alone is a general term
to any kinds of fights or quarrels, the word deadly rises the level of the fight. Deadly
connotes a meaning like dangerous or from the word itself something that can
cause death. When combined, deadly serious defined as a very serious fight that
can cause lot of deaths since it is more specific about war.

Excerpt 2
President Duterte: Ah, palit-palit ang magaga-fashion show.
Q: Good evening sir.
President Duterte: Dress to kill pa gyud ang show natin ahQ: Pangtulog na, Mr. President.
President Duterte: Ah, eh istorya. Sige na, ge.
Dress to kill
This phrase has a connotative meaning. Dress to kill means you are dressed in a
fashionable way that can attract the attention of the crowd.

Excerpt 3
Q

Maayong gabi sir. Going back to some of the local concerns, like the budget.

Edcel Lagman is hell-bent on trying to oppose that budget for the Office of the
President because of huge increases. What is your justification and why is the
increase?

PRESIDENT DUTERTE: I have so many fights. And he can be very sure that that
money will go to either the soldiers or to the police. I should have a budget to buy
information and all of these things. Im fighting a crisis.But at the end, there should
be no worry. It will come to evoke and Im sure Congress would know. Ako, kung
ayaw ninyo binigay, okay lang sa akin. But, you take care of the problem. Wala
naman ako hiningi na sabihin mo, ibulsa ko. All of these things will be used for, lalo
na sa intelligence fund. You know, I also, magtanong ka. Even nong mayor pa ako
dito. Ngayon, Presidente na ako. Magtanong kayo. Umaabot talaga sa kanila yan.
Fights
The connotative meaning of the fight in the context above are the problems or
issues that President Duterte is facing including all the criticism against him and the
war on drugs.
Ibulsa/ put inside the pocket
This is an example for the connotative meaning. Ibulsa means the money of the
government will be put inside his own pocket which means he will use it as his own
fund.
President Duterte insisted that he wont use the money for just his personal
expenses because he is facing many issues that needed the fund more including the
budget to exchange information about the Druglords.

Excerpt 4
Q: She kept on repeating about the possible human right violation but when she
came here for an investigation during your time Mr. Mayor, she in fact could have
violated the rule of law and trying to pull out the prisoner from the prison cell by the
person of Jonathan Balo, without the benefit of a court order.
PRESIDENT DUTERTE: Yeah.
Q: Are you not trying to contemplate on turning them--?
PRESIDENT DUTERTE: Well, I will, you know. De Lima is undergoing a nightmare
now. Tama na yun para sa akin.
Nightmare
This is an example for the Connotative Meaning which define as the negative
happenings that De Lima is experiencing right now. When the reporter asked about
the illegal actions of De Lima, the President is obviously fine about it because she is
in fact already experiencing difficult criticisms.

Excerpt 5
PRESIDENT DUTERTE: De Lima, you are finished. Tapos ka na. Sunod electionby
the way, you look nice. Fighter talaga. Fighter talaga.

Base on the way he deliver the statement above using rising intonation, hes
mad with De Lima. It has an Affective meaning which means De Lima will certainly
fail for the next election because of all the scandal and controversies shes involved.
The adjective that describes her as a fighter is another example of an Affective
Meaning which means De Lima never gave up despite of all the the scandalous
news about her

Excerpt 6

How will this war against the Abu Sayyaf be any different from the previous

administrations, which also by the way, waged wars against the Abu Sayyaf?
PRESIDENT DUTERTE: I said, Ill be harsh. But, that is just a campaign, a
campaign. Go out and destroy them. So patay kung ano yan. Wag na kayo
magtanong ng human rights. Dont bother to think. Wala akong panahon magsalita
even sa drugs. 3 milliondestroying my country. Mistersino yang putang-inang
yan? Anong pangalan ng Amerikano na nagsasalita? Hoy, gago ka. Drugor the
drugs, drug is destroying my country. Do not fuck with me today.
The above statement this time is much clearer that hes angry which can be
seen in his swear words. When he said hell be harsh, there is a strong commitment
that he would not even bother to consider the human rights of the criminals. Do
not fuck with me today, means do not try to irritate him further because he was
already angry base on his first lines. This is an Affective Meaning.

This is an example for the Collocative meaning. Bleeding means their hearts
are in pain or emotionally affected. These bleeding hearts refers to the people who
are doubting President Dutertes action about revealing some names in the public.
They are the ones seeking for the justice and rights for those who are said to be
aggrieved people that Duterte exposed on the media as Druglords, Pushers and
Users.

Serious problem
This is an example for the Collocative meaning. A problem may simply mean
just any issue but when it is collocated with the word serious, the level of the
difficulty of such problem becomes higher. It now mean as a big issue, an important
problem that must be solved directly to suppress further problems or expansion of
the said problem. It may also apply as a priority issue base on the context as it was
comparing the issue of the bleeding hearts to the issue of the enormous number of
the confirmed drug issues.
Sira ang mga ulo- buang for Cebuano
This is an example for the Connotative Meaning. Crazy or somethings wrong
with the mind. The statement is pertaining to the people who are using illegal drugs.
This is a fact for illegal drugs have a scientific study that it can affect brain damage.
Ninja Pasay Pulis
This is an example of Connotative Meaning. A new term for the policemen who
uses and recycles drugs whose crime arent exposed yet.
Magkaibigan - friend
Kalaban- enemy
This is an exmple of Connotative Meaning. The word friend symbolizes
relationship or closeness between two or more people but this friend here

connotes to a supporter or an ally. It is connected to his response to the journalists

who kept on asking about the issues of his policemen. He labeled those reporters
who obviously agrees to his ways as friend and to those journalists who kept on
bugging him about the drug related issues that he already had answered as enemy.

Ask us on bended knees/ Ask on bended knees
This can be an example of a Collocative Meaning. The word phrase bendedknees is an action that literally means bending the knees and when it is collocated
by the word ask on the meaning now changed into someone who is begging for
something from anyone. It is in the Filipino norm that whenever you beg sincerely
for someones help or assistance or any favor, you do it in bended knees. However if
you base on the context itself, the definition of the bended knees means that the
Abu Sayyaf cannot have everything they have since the Presient is talking about the
bombing which caused by them. And more important, the emotions of the speaker
is affected by how he used the said word. It is more like an example of an Affective
Meaning.
Clean Government

This is an example for the Collocative Meaning. Clean denotes as free from dirt
and Government simply denotes as the group of people who control and make
decisions for a country, state, etc. If these two said words are combined, it now
build a new meaning as a good government or free from any corrupt or illegal issues
or something that would make a government dirty.

Not good/ old
This is an example for the Reflected Meaning. Not good could base on the
performance of a persons work or base on the relationship status. But this phrase
refers to the health of President Duterte which the support of this meaning can be
seen on his next lines where he said he was old that means literally old. The old
word could also mean youre registered or applied to a certain place, group, work,
etc. several years already.
Once upon a time
This is an example for the Connotative Meaning. That phrase is popular as the
beginning line of the stories mostly to childrens fairy tales which a story told from
the long time ago. Once upon a time other simpler words is from the distant times
or the old times.

Bow

This is an example for the reflected meaning. Bow could mean the literal action
which is bending the body and could also mean a thing that uses with arrow to
shoot a target but the bow in the context means a sign of respect. In other words,
President Duterte salutes the Laos Governance.
Slapped
An example of a connotative meaning. Slapped defined as a blow with the open
hand while the connotation of the word means the country is fully loaded with the
crime works of terrorists almost everyday.
Harap ng mundo
An example of a connotative meaning. Harap ng mundo or in front of the world
that the connotative meaning is to broadcast to the whole world to let everyone
see or notice their works

Explanation for the Excerpt 5 and 6 (since the the excerpts are connected) :
All those phrases are connected and all affected by the emotion of the speaker.
Mr. President Duterte is obviously mad to all the terrorists who caused troubles and
deaths to his country. When he said, They will pay, the definition of pay here is
pertaining to his revenge which connected then to walay sukod sa balos. The said
phrase

means

that

there

is

no

measurement

for

revenge.

Hindi

ako

magpapautang, another phrase which means he will definitely avenge his

countrymen to the terrorists. And when he said, pulpugin ko kayong lahat, this is
now the demonstration of his revenge which is also the same with the puputulin ko
lahat ang puno diyan to the last, meaning he will cut all the heads or the roots of
all the terrorism until

to the very last head or cause of the crime. Then it is

supported by his phrase, walang makatayo diyan ni isang niyog which promises
that no one will ever stand again or no one can ever make a terrorist attack ever
again. Thus, these phrases are all example of an Affective Meaning.
Very short fuse
This is an example for the connotative meaning. A very short fuse means she
had a very limited or short patience. This phrase pertains to his Daughter Mayor
Sarra Duterte. We use the given statement of President Duterte when Mayor Sarra
Duterte punched the court sherrif who disobeyed her order as an evidence of act
that very short fuse means having a short tempered characteristic.
