COVENANT UNIVERSITY

Course Compact
2015/2016 Academic Session
College: College Science and Technology
Department: Chemical Engineering
Course Code and Title: CHE 310 (Chemical Engineering Process Analysis 1)
Units: 3 Units
Course Lecturer: Engr. Udohitinah J. S;Engr. Mrs. M. Ojewumi.
Semester: Alpha
Location: C29, Chemical Engineering Department
Brief Overview of Course: Chemical Engineering Process Analysis 1 is one of the introductory
chemical engineering courses that focuses on chemical process calculations. The course deals
with materials, units, equipments and operating conditions (enthalpy, pressure) used in chemical
processes to convert raw materials to useful products. It considers the concepts of material and
energy balance and how they are used in determining the rate of materials and energy for a
chemical process. This knowledge of rate of materials and energy for a chemical process is used
in sizing the units and giving specifications to the equipments. The methods of using diagrams,
process flow sheet, to present technical information about chemical processes are also covered in
the course.
Course Objectives: At the end of the course students are expected to be able to:
Identify the units, operations and auxiliary facilities used in chemical processes.
Know the process symbols for various units and auxiliary facilities.
Carry out material and energy balances for various units of chemical processes.
Know how material and energy balances are used in designing chemical processes
Present technical information about chemical processes in a flow sheet.
Method of Lecture Delivery/Teaching Aids: Digital course notes and interactive
delivery of concepts
Course Outlines:

Method of Grading: Continuous Assessment 30%,

Examination 70%.
Ground rules & Regulations: - Assignments must be submitted promptly
-Lateness to lecture hall and disturbances would not be condoned
- Minimum attendance is required to sit for exam.
Assignments: Assignments is given after each module to cover the topics.
Alignment with Covenant University Vision- Chemical Engineering Process Analysis 1 would
equip students with the necessary tools required in the design of chemical
processes and plants.Proper understanding of the subject will eventually
achieve excellence-the key element in the vision of Covenant University.
Industry Relevance: The knowledge gained in Chemical Engineering process Analysis is
highly relevant in the process industry. It forms the bedrock by which
chemical processes and plants are designed: in determining the flow rates
of materials and energy, sizing the units, giving specifications to the
equipments and presenting the technical information in a flow sheet.
