YOUNGS DOUBLE SLIT EXPERIMENT(30-08-2016) (to be submitted by 5/6

September 2016 )
(To be submitted in the Tutorial notebook)
1. Two slits in youngs double slit experiment have width in ratio 4:1. Find the ratio of intensity of
maxima and minima in the interference pattern.
2. In a Youngs experiment the slit-screen distance is one meter and the slits are 1 cm apart. If
the wavelength of light used in the experiment is 500 nm . Calculate the distance between
third order bright fringes.
3. A Youngs double slit arrangement produces interference fringes for sodium light (having
wavelength 589 nm) that are 0.20o apart. What is the angular fringe separation if the entire
arrangement is immersed in water

4. A pair of screens are placed 13.7 m apart . a third order fringe is seen on the screen 2.50 cm
from the central fringe. If the slit were cut 0.0960 cm apart, determine the wavelength of this
light. Roughly what colour is it ?
5. Determine how far from the central fringe the first order violet ( = 350 nm) and red ( =
700 nm) colours will appear if the screen is 10 m away and the slit is 0.05 cm wide.
6. In a Youngs experiment, the central fringe of the interference pattern produced by light
having wavelength 650 nm is shifted to the position of fifth bright fringe when a thin
transparent film of refractive index 1.5 is introduced in front of one of the slits. Find the
thickness of the sheet.
7. A double slit apparatus is immersed in a liquid of refractive index 1.33. it has a slit
separation of 1 10-3 m and the distance between the plane of slits and screen is 1.33m. The
slits are illuminated by a parallel beam of light whose wavelength in air is 630 nm. (i) calculate
the fringe width. (ii) one of the slits in the apparatus is covered with a thin glass sheet of
refractive index of 1.53. Find the smallest thickness of the sheet to bring the adjacent
minimum of the axes.
8. In a double-slit interference pattern at a point, we observe the 8 th bright fringe of wavelength
of 770 nm. What order will be visible here, if the source of light is replaced by wavelength of
473.8 nm?
9. In a Youngs experiment, the distance between the slit is 1 mm. the distance between the slits
and screen is 1m. The wavelength used is 589.3 nm. Compare the intensity at a point at a
distance of 1 mm from the center to that at its center. Also find the minimum distance from
the center of a point where the intensity is half of that at the center.

In a Youngs experiment, fringes are produced using light of wavelength 480 nm. One
slit is covered by a thin plate of glass of refractive index 1.4 and the other slit by another plate
of glass of the same thickness but of refractive index 1.7. On doing so the central bright fringe
shift to the position originally occupied by the fifth bright fringe from the center. Find the
thickness of the plates.

A monochromatic light of wavelength 500 nm is incident on two slits separated by a
distance of 50 mm. the interference pattern is seen on the screen places at a distance of 1m
from the slits. A thin glass plate of thickness 1500 mm and refractive index 1.5 is placed in the
path of one of the slits. Find the intensity at the center of the screen. Also, find the lateral shift
of the central fringe.

FRESENELS BIPRISM EXPERIMENT


1.

The distance between the slit and the biprism and between the biprism and the screen are

50 cm each. The obtuse angle of the biprism is 179 and its refractive index is 1.5. If the
width of the fringes is 0.0135 cm, calculate the wavelength of light.

In a biprism experiment, fringes are observed first with sodium light and fringe width
is measured as 0.347 mm. Then, two thin transparent sheets of thickness 0.16 mm and
0.02 mm and refractive indices 1.65 and 1.45, respectively, are introduced in two beams.
Calculate the shift of the fringes.
3. In a biprism experiment, fringes 0.0195 cm apart are observed at 100 cm from the slit.
On introducing a
convex lens 30 cm from the slit, two images of the slit are seen 0.7 cm apart, at a distance
100 cm from the slit.
Calculate the wavelength of light used.

4. In a biprism experiment, the cross wire of the eye piece is set at the position of the 8 dark

when the source used has a wavelength of 636 nm. When the source is changed the cross

wavelengths of source in each case.
5. A biprism arrangement is set with sodium light and in the field of view of the eye piece
62 fringes are observed. How many fringes will be get in the same field of view if we replace
the source by mercury lamp using green filter.

Determine the wavelength of light used in Fresnels biprism experiment making use of
following data: Fringe-width = 0.201 mm, distance between the slits and the cross wires of
the eye piece = 73.44 cm, distance between the slit images when a convex lens is
used in two conjugate positions = 3.732 mm and 1.242 mm.
7. In a biprism experiment, at a certain position of the eye piece, the fringe width obtained is
0.2 mm. When the eye piece is moved away by 50 cm, the fringe width becomes 0.3 mm. If

When a thin monochromatic source of light was placed at a distance of 0.5 m from the
biprism of refractive index 1.5, the distance between two consecutive bands on the screen
placed at a distance of 1.0 m from the prism was found to be 0.12 mm. If the wavelength of
light was 589.3 nm, calculate the obtuse angle of the prism.
9. Fringes of 450 nm wavelength are observed through Fresnels biprism experiment. The
screen is
1.5 m away from the biprism and the fringe width is 0.25 mm. The refractive index of
the biprism is 1.5 and it is at a distance of 25 cm from the slit. Calculate the obtuse angle of
the biprism.
10. Mica and glass sheets are fixed on images of the slit having same thickness of 750 m, and
the
separation between the two images is 2.5 mm. The refractive index of mica is 1.58 and that
of glass is 1.5 for light of wavelength 600 nm. The interference pattern is observed at a
distance of 1.25 m from the source. Calculate the fringe width and optical path-diference.

THIN FILM INTERFERENCE
