environment on humans.
5. Applies critical thinking skills to organize and use information

PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
Create a map of Southeast Asia that shows its major renewable and non
renewable resources (with symbols). Color code the map to show areas
affected by monsoon, volcano, earthquake and tsunami activity (four
different colors). Select two active areas and call-out boxes explaining
the effects on humans of these physical processes.
KEY UNDERSTANDINGS

Physical processes and availability of resources affect human

population in a region with positive and/or negative consequences.
- What and where are renewable and non renewable resources
mostly found in Southeast Asia?
- How do people adapt to or modify their environment?
- How do physical environment processes affect Southeast Asia
(earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis?)

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES
Engage

1. Group students into threes.

2. Distribute a set of cards using the Teacher Resource: Renewable
and Non Renewable Resources to each group.
3. Students label the T chart (left side of T chart: Renewable and
Nonrenewable Resources) and categorize the cards on the chart.
4. Sketch a T chart on the board. After a few minutes, ask for student
volunteers to share their responses based on how they categorized
the resources
Explore/Explain
1. Continue with the same groups. Facilitate a brief discussion.
2. After a short discussion, distribute or provide the answer key to
the T chart
3. Distribute handout: Vocabulary Activity.
4. Facilitate a classroom consensus for a definition on renewable and
non renewable resources that all may use on the chart in the
handout: Vocabulary Activity.

5. Circulate and monitor groups by probing with questions, clarifying

and correcting misinformation, and adding new information as
needed.
Explore
1. Introduce the powerpoint presentation . Slide 1 presents the ten
countries that are part of the region.
2. Proceed to slide 2- and point out the location for each of the eleven
countries.
3. Continue to slides 3-7. Explain to students that each of these
countries will be investigated / explored.
4. Students sketch a large-scale map using slide 2 as a guide
5. After sketching the map, groups may outline each of the countries
using pencil colors or markers and label the names of the
