Strange Design - From Objects To Behaviours

It Editions 2016 ISBN 9782917053263 Acqn 26449
Pb 15x23cm 378pp 210ills 33.75
In recent years, strange ambiguous, dysfunctional, enigmatic, and complicated objects have
emerged in the world of design. These objects are based on an approach that has been called
anti-design, radical, conceptual, or critical design a speculative design that instead of offering
solutions raises questions. Design that is not subject to the imperatives of the power structures of
society, but is instead critical. Via a strategy of modifying objects away from their usual forms and
utilitarian functions, this design evokes unusual uses and behaviours. With contributions by Gijs
Bakker, Jurgen Bey, Bless, Didier Faustino, Alessandro Mendini, and Ugo La Pietra among
others.

Counter Fictional Design

It Editions 2016 ISBN 9782917053225 Acqn 26588
Pb 20x30cm 128pp 130ills 20col 22.50
This publication contains five conference performances, written in French and English, by the
Franco-Korean duo of Ju Hyun Lee and Ludovic Burel. Known for work that combines
publications, performances, and installations, the artist-researchers present a critical examination
of the status of design within the KVM (an acronym that varies with the projects in the Korean
Vitra Museum, Korean Vocal Museum, Korean Vernacular Museum, etc.). The term counter
fictional design applies equally to objects and behaviours, in both the cultural and managerial
spheres. Interested in postcolonial issues, the two artists together pursue a self-described
approach of mimicry and sly civility.

Graphic 37 - Introduction To Computation

Propaganda 2016 no ISBN Acqn 26590
Pb 23x30cm 192pp 240ills 200col 26
How might computational approaches inform contemporary graphic design practices? That is the
question posed by this instalment of Graphic, which seeks to delineate the quintessential nature
of using computation, not only as a means to govern automatic and algorithmic production of
objects, but also as a logical thinking process for design. Various designers and writers were
invited to explore tangible experiences of using computation and to discuss the validity and
possibilities of these approaches, both today and in the future. Includes an interview with Rob
Giampietro, plus contributions from Hansje van Halem, Adrian Shaughnessy, MuirMcNeil, Jrg
Lehni, and many others.
