MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

"It can happen. It does happen.

But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane.

We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the
last years editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.
Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic
excellence and continuous improvement.
I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are
supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning
and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting
the needs of all students.
It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to
achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look
forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.
The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking
forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in
this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers
are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play
the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.
The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive
challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic
needs of our students.
I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the
opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.
Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on
this path.
My best wishes to all.

Franz Boas
1858-1942

Widely considered to be one of the greatest and most influential

anthropologists ever, Franz Boas was a German-American
scientist, who is also known as the Father of Modern
Anthropology. He was the first person to implement the scientific
method into the study of human cultures and societies.
Early Life and Education:
Born in Minden, Westphalia, Franz Boas showed an early interest
in both nature and natural sciences. He studied at the universities
of Heidelberg, Bonn, and Kiel, and finally got his Ph.D. in physics
with a minor in geography from the University of Kiel in 1881.
Boas worked in Baffinland, Canada, from 1883 to 1884, while from
1885 to 1886; he conducted field research in several museums on
the North Pacific Coast of North America. He was also an
important part of a project involving the cultures of Native
Americans which lasted almost one year.
Contributions and Achievements:
Franz Boas was the most important figure in 20th century North
American anthropology. He laid down the four-field structure of
the discipline around cultural, physical, linguistic and
archaeological disciplines pertaining to the American Indian. He
also trained many professional anthropologists. Boas made
memorable contributions to the changes in immigrant head form
undercut eugenics arguments and lessened the significance of
anthropometric measures of race.

The archaeological works of Franz Boas were almost cursory.

While studying culture, his theoretical contributions dealt with
the critique of evolution. He destroyed the rationalist theories of
human nature. His historical particularism, his insistency on
stringent ethnographic method, and his stress on the native point
of view were pivotal to the development of modern anthroplogy.
Later Life and Death:
Franz Boas oversaw the Columbia Anthropology Department for
more than four decades. Boas died on 21 December, 1942. He was
84 years old.

Immune and targeted therapies with radiation

therapy improves outcomes for melanoma brain
metastases patients, say researchers: (21st
September, 2016)

Researchers have sought to determine if patients with melanoma

brain metastases treated with immune and targeted therapies had
improved outcomes over patients treated with conventional
chemotherapy. They retrospectively analyzed data from 96
patients with melanoma brain metastases who were treated with
stereotactic radiation therapy within 3 months of different
targeted therapies (antiPD-1 therapy, antiCTLA-4 therapy,
BRAF inhibitor plus a MEK inhibitor, or a BRAF inhibitor alone)
or conventional chemotherapy.

How to power up graphene implants without

frying cells: (23rd September, 2016)

In the future, our health may be monitored and maintained by tiny

sensors and drug dispensers, deployed within the body and made
from graphene -- one of the strongest, lightest materials in the
world. Graphene is composed of a single sheet of carbon atoms,
linked together like razor-thin chicken wire, and its properties
may be tuned in countless ways, making it a versatile material for
tiny, next-generation implants.

Expanded indications for Ilaris for three rare

diseases

There are three new indications for Ilaris (canakinumab). The new
indications are for rare and serious auto-inflammatory diseases in
adult and pediatric patients:
Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptor Associated Periodic
Syndrome (TRAPS);
Hyperimmunoglobulin D Syndrome (HIDS)/Mevalonate
Kinase Deficiency (MKD); and
Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF).
All three syndromes are hereditary diseases that are characterized
by periodic attacks of fever and inflammation, as well as severe
muscle pain. There are no previously approved therapies for
TRAPS or HIDS/MKD.
For the first time, patients with TRAPS and HIDS/MKD, two
painful and life altering diseases, have access to a treatment that

may help improve their quality of life, said Badrul Chowdhury,

M.D., Ph.D, director of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and
Rheumatology Products in FDAs Center for Drug Evaluation and
Research.
Ilaris was previously approved for another periodic fever syndrome
called Cryopyrin-Associated Periodic Syndromes (CAPS) and for
active systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Health care
professionals should review the prescribing information in the
labeling for detailed information about the approved uses.
Approvals for the new indications were based on clinical studies,
including safety, efficacy and pharmacokinetic data. The most
common adverse reactions for these indications are injection site
reactions and being more susceptible to catching colds.
Ilaris can cause serious side effects, including increased risk of
serious infections. Ilaris can lower the immune systems ability to
fight infections. Other serious side effects include decreased ability
to fight infections (immunosuppression) and allergic reactions.
Patients experiencing any symptoms of an allergic reaction should
call their healthcare provider, including: rash, itching and hives,
difficulty breathing or swallowing, and dizziness or feeling faint.
Patients should not get live vaccines if receiving Ilaris. Patients
should not receive Ilaris if they are allergic to canakinumab or any
of the ingredients in Ilaris.
Ilaris is manufactured and distributed by Novartis
Pharmaceuticals Corporation, of East Hanover, New Jersey.
The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety,
effectiveness, security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and
other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The
agency is also responsible for the safety and security of our nations
food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off
electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.
