NVH Bolts and Normal Mode Analysis

Introduction
A head and Block models are connected with NVH bolts and Normal mode
analysis is performed with this model. The method of creating NVH bolts in
SimLab is explained here. Renumbering of nodes and elements is also shown.
In this example the procedure to create NVH bolts and running a Normal mode
analysis is shown. The model shown in this example is volume meshed one.

1. Import the model

The model consists of two parts namely Head.gda and Block.gda. Import these
two files separately into SimLab.
Select File | Import | GDA and import Head.gda.

Select the model and click Open to import the model.

Similarly import Block.gda

Now the two parts will be in separate models. This can be seen in the Assembly
model tree view.

2. Bolt Creation
In SimLab, a bolt is created using two tools viz., Bolt-Head and Bolt-Thread.
The Bolt-Head denotes the Head portion of a bolt and the Bolt-Thread denotes
the Thread portion of a bolt.
Thus a bolt, which connects a through hole and a blind hole, is created using
Bolt-Head and Bolt-Thread. A bolt which connects two through holes with a
nut on one side is created using Bolt-Head alone.

Bolt-Head

There are two methods to create a head portion of the bolt. The edge of one or
many holes can be chosen manually (Edge based) or a face can be chosen and
the holes within the given radius limits will be identified (Face Based)
automatically. Bar Radius denotes the radius of the bar body used to connect

the two spiders of the head or thread bolt. Both the methods are explained
ahead.

TOP RBE

BOTTOM RBE

Bolt-Thread

Similarly Thread bolt can also be created either Edge based or Face based. The
schematic structure of the Thread bolts is provided in the following pictures.

2.Creating the Bolt

a. Bolt-Head
Edge Based
Select Applications | Special | Bolt Modeling. Open the

Bolt-Head

dialog. Place the cursor in the Bolt-Edge Ids combo box of Top RBE and select
the top edges of all the 4 holes in the Head part. Change the scale value to 2.5.
Now place the cursor in the Bolt-Edge Ids combo box of Bottom RBE and select
the bottom edges of all the 4 holes. (We can hide the Block from display in the
assembly tree view) Enter the Bar Dia as 160. Click Apply to create the head
bolt.

Face based (Alternate Method)

Enable the Face Based option in the dialog. Select the top face of the Head part.
Enter the minimum and maximum diameter of the holes to be identified. Here
enter Minimum as 0 and maximum as 1200. Enter the bar dia as 160. Click Apply
to create the head portion of the bolt.

Spiders will be created as shown in the below picture.

b. Bolt-Thread
Go to Applications | Special | Bolt Modeling. Open the
Thread dialog. Hide all the bodies from display except the block.

Bolt

Edge based
Select the edges from all the holes. Reduce the scale to 1.5. Enter the Depth
value as 1500 and pitch as 1000. Enter Bar Dia as 160. Toggle Shape to Down.
Click Apply to create the Thread portion of the bolt.

Face based (Alternate Method)

Enable the Face based in the dialog. Select the top face of the block. Reduce
the scale factor to 1.5. Enter the minimum dia to be identified as 0 and dia as
1200. Enter the Bar dia as 160.
Click Apply to create the spiders. The direction of the thread spiders may be up,
down or both the sides as the case may be.

After creating head and thread, merge the models using

Geometry |

Merge.

3. Connecting Head and Thread Spiders

Applications | Special | Bolt Modeling | Connection and open the Rigid BAR
tool.

The selection filter will be in All Bodies by default. Hide both the bodies. Now
select the top spiders of the Thread portion of the bolt. Then select the bottom
spiders of the Head portion of the bolt. Enter the tolerance as 1000 and enable
the degrees of freedom in the three translation directions. Click Apply. Rigid BAR
will be created.

12

Thus any number of bolts can be created easily with small number of steps using
the face based bolt creation.

4. Constraints
Select the Applications | Structural | Constraints and open the Fixed
constraints dialog. Constrain the bottom face of the block in all the three
translation directions.

0.7855. Material and Properties

In the Structural workbench open the Material dialog. Enter the parameters and
enter the name of the material as shown in the picture.

Click OK to create the material.

Open the Property Dialog and select the Head and Block parts. Select the
material we have already created and click OK to assign the properties.

6. Exporting and Solving

Open the

Export dialog. Select the OptiStruct solver and Normal Mode

/ Eigen Value Analysis type. Set the write mode to By Models. This will write
the model based OptiStruct input file. Click OK and enter the name of the input
file. Solve the problem in OptiStruct solver.

15

16

7.Results
Open Applications | Results and select the
dialog.

Import Results

Select the .op2 file and click Open. The model will be loaded. In the Assembly
model, choose the results tab. The result of 10 modes with components and
magnitude will be displayed. Expand the each mode to see the result
components.

17

18

Double click on the result component. The result contour will be displayed.
