The superstructure of Crash Fire Tender shall be built on chassis with fully
automatic transmission duly approved by concerned vehicle Quality Assurance
Authority. i.e., CQA(V) Ahemdnagar for imported/ indigenous vehicle and
CQA(BEML) Bangalore, for imported/ indigenous TATRA vehicle. It shall consist of
a water tank of 6500 litres capacity with necessary fittings as per Para 6.1 to 6.10 of
this specification. A foam tank of 800 litres capacity shall be provided with necessary
fitting as per 6.1.5.1 to 6.1.5.16 of this specification. A midship mounted pump,
driven off the vehicle power- take-off (PTO) shall be fitted, having a minimum output
of 4000 litres per minute at a delivery pressure of 850 kPa (8.5 bar) and suction lift of
3m. The pump shall also be capable of minimum output of 3000 litres per minute at
higher pressure of 1250 kPa (12.5 bar) to suit the monitor output for same suction lift.
4.1.1
In the past, Tatra (ex. Import) F-23 (indigenous) ex. M/s Ashok Leyland,
MAN and Magirus chassis were used for CFT. In case of use of any other chassis, the
same be quality assured by concerned AHSP.
4.2
The Crash Fire Tender shall be capable of the following minimum
performance with the monitor mounted on the roof of the cabin and 2 handlines on
either side :a) A minimum output of 3000 litres through monitor at pressure not
exceeding 1250 kPA (12.5 bar) to give effective monitor throw, of 55
metres minimum of specified quality foam. The monitor shall be
capable of being operated electro-pneumatically/ hydraulically by
joystick with arrangements for manual over-ride.
(b) A minimum output of 500 litres of water foam solution through each of
the two handlines, on either side of the Crash Fire Tender to give a
minimum effective throw, of 25 metres of specified foam, at pump
delivery pressure not exceeding 850 kPa (8.5 bar) and using 30 metres
of specified hose and specified quality foam.
(c) It shall be possible to operate the monitor and the two handlines at
pump delivery pressure of 850 kPa (8.5 bar).
(d) During operation of Crash Fire Tender there shall not be any undue
vibrations. If any, it shall be kept to the minimum level by providing
suitable dampening arrangements and sound deadners.
4.3
The monitor and handlines must employ self-aspirating type foam
production system, where aeration is done at the branch pipe. The foam compound
used shall conform to IS 4989 (Part 1) & (Part 2) to give performance indicated in
Para 4.2 at the induction ratio specified in Para 4.3.1. The quality of foam produced
shall satisfy requirements stipulated in Para 4.3.2.
8

JSS 4210-13: 2005

(Revision No.1)
4.3.1
The foam induction shall be automatic, with change in output required
through a combination of monitor and handlines. Around the pump, proportionator
shall be used with clearly marked induction ratios, of 35% (-2% to + 5%), 6% 0.5%
& 8% 0.5%. The induction ratio once fixed shall maintain this limit of variation for
the entire range of inductor setting.
4.3.2
The system of foam production from monitor and handlines shall be so
designed as to produce satisfactory quality of foam with the following minimum
properties:(a)

Minimum expansion ratio

1:8

(b)

25 percent drainage time

(i) For protein foam

120 seconds min. to 210 seconds max.

(ii) For AFFF

120 seconds max.

4.4
A first aid hose reel service shall be provided on the appliance with 60 m
hose, fed from the water supply available on the Crash Fire Tender.
4.5
It shall be possible for the Crash Fire Tender to use water from a separate
source of water supply for prolonged use and foam supply through a pick up tube
from drums at ground level.
4.6
The Crash Fire Tender shall be equipped with five Nos. self Defence foam
nozzles for self-protection, particularly of the wheels. The angle of the front nozzles
shall be so adjusted that a throw of 6 metres with a total coverage of 6 metres width is
achieved when the front nozzles are operated at 590 kPa (6 kgf/cm2) pressure. Self
Defence foam nozzle shall deliver foam mix solution with a discharge capability of
approximately 180 litres/ min. The water tank, foam tank, monitor, handlines and selfDefence shall have pneumatically controlled ball valves for operation and control
from within the cabin. It shall be possible to switch over to manual control by
isolating pneumatic control system.
All pneumatic control system shall be used with air supply at pressure
available from the vehicle air brake system. The vehicle air brake system shall be
tapped for the pneumatic control system with a regulator valve so that the minimum
air pressure required for operating the vehicle is available all the time and the
pneumatic control for fire operation actuates when the air pressure in the system
exceeds this minimum level. In case of any leakage in the pneumatic control system,
the vehicle operation shall not be adversely affected. Opening and closing valves to
the monitor, handlines and to the pump shall be achieved through operation of
pneumatic controls from the cabin.
4.7
The supplementary agent shall consist of carbon di-oxide extinguisher of
2 x 22.5 kg capacity mounted on the rear side of the equipment with a common
header, a 15 m hose reel and extended applicator with necessary mounting and
controls to give the performance as specified and Dry Chemical Powder extinguisher
9

JSS 4210-13: 2005

(Revision No.1)
75 kg capacity with discharge hose of 20 mm bore x 10 meter length with fittings to
be supplied.
4.8
Lever type, quarter turn, ball valves shall be used throughout except where
otherwise specified. All levers for normal operation of the valves shall operate in a
vertical plane with levers and linkage arranged in such a manner that the pulling of
the levers downwards, towards the operator would open the valve and pushing away
from the operator would close the valve.
4.9
The appliance shall be supplied complete with all accessories and essential
operating spares and tools as detailed in Para 8. Where specific items are not required
to be supplied, suitable arrangement shall be made for stowage and secure location of
such items to suit the Crash Fire Tender role. All locating and securing devices shall
be of sufficient strength, reliability and shall be of quick opening and closing type for
removal of accessories and other items without loss of time. If required suitable
folding type steps may e provided for the purpose for easy reach t locker. All the
lockers in a CFT shall have single key.
4.10
All items where standard specifications do not exist, best available
commercial quality as approved by the Quality Assurance Authority.
4.11
Each Crash Fire Tender shall be complete with two copies of literature
(Bi-lingual) as specified, which shall be securely packed and located at a suitable
place for use and effective storage under operating conditions. Besides additional
copies will be required to be supplied as per contract.
4.12
The unit shall be designed to be as compact as possible, also keeping in
view ease of accessibility to all service parts. The pump/foam making equipment and
controls shall be so arranged that one man can operate foam or water lines from the
driver's compartment or control panel (except monitor) as required.
