Access Shaft. -The upper portion of a deep manhole is called access shaft.

Its minimum size

for a rectangular manhole is about 0.76 x 0.6 m; and for a particular manhole, the minimum
diameter is about 0.6 to 0.75 m. Its depth depends upon the depth of the manhole and the
height required for the working chamber.
