The Odyssey

Odysseus Odyssey
Directions: The word odyssey means a long series of wanderings or adventures, especially when filled with notable
experiences. In the spaces below, describe what hardships Odysseus suffers from, how he overcomes each difficulty,
and what price he must pay.

Description of event
Odysseus and his men start out their journey by
arriving at Ismarus, the city of the Kikones.
Odysseus and the crew loot the city and its women
and tells them to quickly go back to the ship. The
men refuse, however, and the Kikones' army arrives
at the scene.

overcomes hardship

Odysseus and his crew realizes that they


are vastly outnumbered and try to quickly
run away to their ships.

Six men from each of the ships fight the


Akhaians (and die fighting) causing grief
for the entire crew.

2. LotusEaters

After experiencing a storm, Odysseus' ship are to


the extreme south to the island of the Lotos Eaters.
These seemingly harmless race of people gives
them intoxicated Lotos, causing the crewmen who
ate the sweet fruit to lose all desire of going back
home.

Odysseus drags them to the ship and ties


them up inside.

Odysseus lost the support that the


intoxicated men used to give him.

3. Cyclops

On the next island, they stop to resupply themselves


in a cave. They snatch some food, but after
Odysseus tells them to stay out of curiosity of who
lives there, Kyklops named Polyphemos comes in,
eats two men, and traps them inside by shutting the
entrance with a boulder two eat the rest for future
meals.

Odysseus creates a plan to to blind


Polyphemos with a fire-hardened wooden
stick to allow the escape of his crew.

4. Aeolus

A wind god, Aeolus gave Odysseus a bag of wind to get


home. The bag would supply his ship with a steady wind.
However, after nine days when Ithaka is in sight, his crew
open the bag thinking that there are riches inside of it. This
blows them back to Aeolus, who this time, refuses to give
them a second bag because he believes that they were
cursed by the gods.

Odysseus sent all of his men as scouts to check out


the halls of Kirke. Only one other person
(Eurylokhos) returned and he tells Odysseus about
Kirke.

Kirke tells Odysseus to go to the underworld and


talk to the ghost of Tiresias, as sort of fortune
teller.

Description of event

Four of the crew are eaten and they are


cursed after Odysseus yells out basically
all of his contact information. Polyphemos
tells Poseidon to take revenge on
Odysseus.

Odysseus and the crew slowly row back


towards Ithaka but land it takes them six
days to get to the next land, Lamos.

They missed their opportunity to get home


when they were so close to their destination.

Hermes gives Odysseus a Moly herb, an


herb with properties known to counter
Kirke's spells. Hermes gives Odysseus a
plan of operation for Odysseus to regain
his men.

Odysseus stays with Kirke for one year


until one of his crew members tells him
that they need to leave.

Tiresias tells Odysseus and his crew that


if he kills the cattle of Helios, they will
face his wrath.

Odysseus meets other famous greek heros


but ran away after being overwhelmed by
the overabundance of ghosts trying to
speak with him.

Odysseus ( as instructed by Circe) plugs


his men's ears with beeswax and has his
crew tie him to the mast of the ship.

The temptations to go to the sirens

7. Sirens

Odysseus comes back to Circe's island to bury


Elpenor and Circe tells him all the hardships that
he will have to face. Odysseus leaves and they
approach the island of the Sirens.

He can't do much except listen to Circe's


advice and hold his course against the
clis of Scylla.

He loses six of his men

8. Scylla

As Odysseus and his men pass the Sirens' island,


they encounter Scylla, a 6 headed monster who
when's ships pass, swallows one sailor for each
head.

Charybdis is a giant whirlpool that threatens to to


swallow the entire ship.

Listens to Circe and keeps his course


against the clis of Scyllas lair.

6 men lost

Odysseus is stuck on the island of Ogygia. A


goddess asks Odysseus to be her husband and
she oers hum immortality. After living in tg island
for 8 years, Zues and Hermes convince her to let
Odysseus go.

The gods take pity and let him and


force Calypso to let him go

He lost 7 to 8 years on the island

After leaving Calypso's island and 18 days at sea,


He arrives at the island of Scheria. A goddess Ino
took pity that n him and gives him a magic viel to
keep I'm afloat. Odysseus meets Nausicaa who
was washing her clothes. She provides him with
foods and invites him to her palace

Athena makes Odysseus handsome


and Nausicaa falls in love with him

Doesn't lose anything. Last stop


before reaching home
