Introduction
Sparks 6 Teachers Resource Book offers
information and tips to help you get the most from
all the teachers materials. It also contains additional
photocopiable resources to help widen and support
the childrens learning.

Flashcards

Each unit of Sparks is accompanied by two posters

with pop-outs. Side A is used to introduce and
practise the vocabulary and content of the unit.
Side B is used to exploit the unit contents in a
different way. The Teachers Book gives full instructions
of when and how to use the posters and pop-outs.
The pop-outs can also be used as flashcards.
Tips
Keep the pop-outs for each unit in an envelope
or sandwich bag to avoid them getting lost or
mixed up.
Put two nails or drawing pins on the wall or in
the wood of the blackboard and hang up the
poster using two bulldog clips to avoid damage
and the mess of Blu-Tack or adhesive tape. The
poster is easily displayed and reversed.
Hang the posters at the height of the children
so that they can easily see them and participate
with the activities.

E-solutions
All the Sparks digital components run on Windows,
Linux or MAC operating systems and are compatible
with all interactive whiteboard (IWB) software.
Insert the Multi-ROM or the CD-ROM into the
computer connected to the IWB. If it fails to run
automatically, click on exeWin.exe to run.
The Sparks E-solutions pack includes three
CD-ROMs:
1) Students Multi-ROM
Sparks 6 Multi-ROM is a fantastic interactive
resource for both children and teachers which
provides thorough practice of the Students Book
contents. It contains eight units with interactive
activities covering all the main language taught in
the Students Book.
Sparks 6 Multi-ROM can be used in class with
an IWB to exploit the course contents while also
helping children understand the concept of working
together as a team to achieve a common objective.
Alternatively, it can be used on an individual level
by children working alone either in the Multimedia

Santillana Educacin S.L./Richmond Publishing 2009 PHOTOCOPIABLE

Flashcards are an excellent classroom tool to help

introduce, reinforce and review vocabulary. Sparks
comes with a pack of 87 full colour flashcards
illustrating key vocabulary. Instructions for using the
flashcards are given in the teaching notes for each
lesson.
Each picture flashcard has a corresponding word
card which can be used to help develop childrens
reading skills, to assist in writing activities and to use
in matching activities. All the flashcards are colour
coded by unit for easy identification.
The Sparks flashcards can also be used in a variety
of games which are explained on the Options pages
of the Teachers Book. Children learn best when
they enjoy what they are doing and games provide
a way to engage childrens interest and enthusiasm.
Games offer valuable opportunities to use the
language for real purposes and provide enjoyable
occasions for repeating and reinforcing the
language, supporting retention and recall. Games
which incorporate active methods using physical
response are ideal for assimilating language.
The children also have their own key vocabulary
cut-outs which can be used in class or at home.
There are games and activity ideas on the Options
pages of the Teachers Book. The children can make
envelopes or use food bags to store their cut-outs.

Tips to use students audio material

Sparks 6 Multi-ROM contains the students audio
material for PC or CD player. Insert the Multi-ROM
into a CD player or PC to listen to the students
audio material. The first eight tracks are songs
from the Students Book which can be used as
background music as the children work.

Unit menu
Vocabulary and grammar games
Each unit contains two vocabulary activities and
two grammar activities which provide further
practice of the Students Book contents.
The bottom menu contains a running score which
shows the total number of questions the children
have to complete as well as the ones they get
correct. The bottom menu also offers the possibility
of restarting any activity immediately.
Most of the activities include a timer to make them
more challenging for the children.
Activities with a long listening include a control to
pause the audio or move backwards and forwards.
This enables the children to listen to any part they
need again.
Some activities contain more than one screen. Click
on the icon on the bottom menu to access the next
screen.
The Multi-ROM activities include a final screen
showing the correct answers to revise the key
concepts presented in each activity. In some
activities the revision starts automatically right after
the cheering animation. In others, click on the icon
on the results screen to access.
Each unit contains a digital version of the Students
Book story and a reading comprehension activity.
The story runs automatically to facilitate its
projection. The digital story is an excellent tool to
attract the childrens attention.
The Phonics section offers an additional activity to
consolidate the listening and writing skills of the
children.

In the Writing section the students reinforce their

writing skills through three different types of
activities:
Dictation
Find and correct the mistakes
Comprehension
In Festivals there are two activities. Listen to
the Festivals songs while you do a listening
comprehension activity with your class.
The Multi-ROM also contains a screen to listen to all
the songs of the course.
The assessment for the activities is done in different
ways according to the activity type:
Final screen showing the childrens answers as
well as the correct answers at the end of the
activity.
Final screen showing the correct answers
to facilitate the revision of the key concepts
presented in each activity.
Instant feedback as they do the activity.
Instant feedback and final screen with an
animation at the end of the activity to revise key
concepts.
Check and try again: once the activity is
completed, children check their answers and
have the chance to try again. The correct answers
remain for them to focus on their mistakes. After
this second attempt, they can see the correct
answers and compare them with their own by
clicking on CHECK again.
Instant feedback with countdown: the children
have to pay careful attention and choose the
correct answer, if they choose the wrong answer
the clock runs faster! The score the children get
depends on how quickly they finish the activity
with the least number of mistakes. Children can
always get a better score by doing the activity
again!

All the images and pictures in Sparks 6 Digital
can be enlarged. This is a fantastic visual feature
which can be used for developing childrens
speaking skills.
3) The Interactive Young Learner Practice CD-ROM
(Flyers level)
This CD-ROM includes three complete interactive
exams for YLE practice on an IWB. The interactive
tools for the children are placed at a lower level on
the screen to facilitate their participation with the
IWB. The interactive tools for the teacher are located
at the top of the screen to help teachers guide and
control the childrens work.
Apart from IWB exploitation, the Interactive
YLE Practice CD-ROM also contains a network
installation facility which enables the children to
work at their own rythym in the Multimedia Lab.
This helps teachers cater for mixed ability settings.
Tips
Teachers can focus on practising one activity type or
have the children complete one exam at a time. The
CD-ROM contains a printable version of each exam
which includes tips for conducting the Speaking
Exams, as well as all the answers.

DVD

Tips for the Test - YLE and Trinity

The Cambridge Young Learner exams are designed
for children aged from 7 to 12 years old. They are
tested normally in their own school environment or
an exam centre, and the exams all follow the same
format. There are three levels: Starters, Movers and
Flyers. In terms of grammar and lexis, the Flyers level
is on par with the KET exams. The difference is that,
unlike the exams for older students, children cannot
fail the YLE. Every participant is given a diploma with
badges in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.
The badges are coloured in depending on the
success of the candidate.

The Sparks E-solutions YLE CD-ROM includes three

complete tests. These can be printed out in colour
and used for classroom practice; one set can be
used many times. The children write their answers
on a piece of paper except for the last page of the
Listening exams, which is used for colouring and
therefore can only be used once.
Tips
When doing the practice exams it is best to
recreate similar circumstances as when the
students will do the exam themselves, allow
them the same amount of time, and have them
practise exam techniques.
The ESOL web site has an abundance of exam
tips as well as more practice activities and
information about the exams.
The interactive activities on the CD-ROM are
divided into the different sections of the exams.
This way the teacher may choose to practice
the same exam question in various exams
or practise once complete exam, or pick and
choose activities from different exams.
Trinity College London, Graded Examinations in
Spoken English
The Trinity Examinations in Spoken English are
one-to-one oral examinations with a native English
speaking Trinity examiner, which test a students
speaking and listening skills. The exams provide an
official recognition of a students level of spoken
English and are accepted by universities and
employers worldwide. Candidates must be aged 7
or over.
The examinations are divided into a series of 12 oral
exams which test the students general conversation
and ability to discuss prepared topics. The exam
grades range from absolute beginner level to near
native fluency.

Santillana Educacin S.L./Richmond Publishing 2009 PHOTOCOPIABLE

Each unit of the Sparks 6 DVD shows people in

authentic situations. This can be watched with or
without subtitles. A Play all option is also available.
The Sparks 6 Teachers Resource Book includes
worksheets for working with the DVD in class.

Exams follow a very set format. The children never

write on the exam papers, rather they answer on
an answer sheet, usually with one word answers.
They are tested in groups, except for the Speaking
session, where the test is given individually.

Introduction
Apart from being a recognised meter of a students
skills in English, the examination also works as a
motivational tool encouraging students to practise
and try to communicate in English.

Initial Stage (Grades 1, 2 and 3) Example questions

Grade 1
Hello, good morning, goodbye
Point to / show me (the red crayon, your nose, my
shirt, the dog, the big cow...)
Go to / touch (the window, the door...)
Stand up, please.

Whats his name?
Put the red pen on the green book.
Wheres the rubber?
Where do you come from?
Tell me about your house.
Do you have any pets?
What day is it today?
Is it March or April?
How many children are there in your class?
Look at this picture, what is this woman wearing?
Grade 3

topic and the conversation. Children should try

Santillana Educacin S.L./Richmond Publishing 2009 PHOTOCOPIABLE

Tips
In each English lesson, ask general questions
such as What day is it today? Whats the weather
like today? Is it spring or summer? How old are you?
Encourage full answers whenever asking
questions. T: What day is it today? SS:Tuesday.
T: Its Tuesday.
When asking questions, if a child does not know
the answer, encourage them to say I dont
know or I cant remember or Im sorry, I dont
know the word in English, rather than remaining
silent or saying errr.
Make question practice fun. Do it in the form of a
team quiz and award points. Or ask questions at
the end of a lesson, whoever answers correctly
can line up first.
Practise for the exam in regular, short sessions
so candidates become more confident with the
style of question and can answer more rapidly
and naturally.
When choosing a grade for candidates, consider
the childs personality as well as their level of
English. A shy child with a good level of English,
may not do as well as a more outgoing child
who speaks more spontaneously.
Encourage the children to ask questions too.
From Level 2 onwards they are expected to ask
the examiner questions.

Whats this?
What are they?
How many cats are there in this picture?
Look, I have a (blue shirt, brown trousers and black
shoes). And you?

Introduction
to maintain a fluid conversation rather than just
answering the examiners questions.
Tips for preparing the topic
Children should choose something that they
are genuinely interested in and can talk easily
about, (a hobby, pet, recent holiday...).
They should collect all necessary photos or
pictures well before the exam to give them time
to plan the points and practice what to say.
Children should not learn their topic by heart as
they must speak naturally and spontaneously in
the exam.
Allow children the possibility of presenting their
topic to the class and answering their questions
to give them more confidence.
The child should prepare several questions to
ask the examiner related to their topic.
Make a photocopy of the Topic Form for each
student. Check that their information and
spelling is correct before giving them the real
Topic Form to complete.
Example questions

Using the worksheet sections

Sparks optional worksheets can be photocopied
according to the needs of individual children or the
class as a whole.
The Options pages of the Teachers Book indicate
when each activity should be done to assure that
the content and vocabulary have been covered in
the lesson. There are eight photocopiable sections.

Unit 1

Unit 2
Victoria: Hi. This is Spitalfields Market in London.
Its a Sunday market. Its open every Sunday. But what
exactly can you buy here?
This used to be a fruit and vegetable market in the
old days. Clothes here are a bit more expensive than
other markets.
How do you get the money? I save up my pocket
money and do odd jobs for my parents. Some kids
have part-time jobs, like delivering newspapers.
What do you think? No, I dont like it either.
So, what is street fashion?
Woman: I think street fashion is colourful, cheap,
its individual.

Santillana Educacin S.L./Richmond Publishing 2009 PHOTOCOPIABLE

Victoria: This is a public school. Well, actually its a

private school. Most parents pay a lot of money for
their children to come here.
Jasmine: My name is Jasmine and I come from Hong
Kong. My typical day starts off with swimming in the
morning at six oclock. Then I have breakfast in the
house and then I have double Chemistry in the science
labs. After double Chemistry I have double French in
the language centre and then I have double volleyball
in the hall. Hopefully, when I leave Im going to go to
university but Im not sure what Im going to do.
Victoria: What subjects do you study?
Camilla: I study French, English, Art and Philosophy.
Suresh: I study Maths, English, Science, Media Studies,
French, History and IT.
Georgina: I study French, History, Media Studies,
Maths and Science.
Indira: I study Art, Science. I study Classical Civilization
and Sixteenth Century History.
Victoria: Now, this is a comprehensive school. Education
is free and about sixteen hundred students come here.
They start at the age of eleven and go on till sixteen or
finish at eighteen if they are going on to university.
Alex: My names Alex. We get to school at quarter to
eight and have registration. We have to be at school
on time and we have to be punctual to lessons and
we have to wear our uniform and we have to do our
homework. We have to wear a red jumper, black
trousers and black shoes. We have five lessons, which
are an hour long each. Today, for example, we have
Chemistry and Art. We call our teachers Sir or Miss.
I like my school because the classrooms are attractive
and we have large playing fields and lots of other
activities after school. Theres nothing I dont like
about my school.

Victoria: So, how much are you spending today on

clothes?
Woman: Ill probably spend about fifty pounds.
Victoria: Whats street fashion?
Stall holder: Its what people wear on the streets.
Victoria: So how much do teenagers usually spend
on clothes?
Stall holder: About twenty pounds, not a lot of money.
Victoria: Whats street fashion?
Maddy: Street fashion to me is individual clothing.
Victoria: What kind of clothes do you like?
Grazia: I like London street fashion clothes.
Eddie: I like baggy clothes, darker colours, greens,
browns, jackets, jeans.
Maddy: I like quite colourful clothes. I make a lot of
my own clothes though.
Frank: I like practical clothes. I like warm clothes on
a day like today.
Victoria: So, how much do you spend on clothes?
Grazia: I spend about two hundred pounds a month
on clothes.
Eddie: I spend between twenty and a hundred
pounds a month.
Maddy: Probably about a maximum of about twenty
quid.
Frank: I spend as little as possible on clothes.
Victoria: Where do you buy your clothes?
Grazia: At markets or in boutiques or shops in
different places in London.
Eddie: I buy all my clothes in the markets. I dont buy
any from the shops.
Frank: I buy my clothes anywhere other than London
because its expensive here.
Victoria: Whats your favourite piece of clothing?
Grazia: My favourite item at the moment is this bag.
It actually comes from Italy.
Maddy: My favourite piece of clothingIve got a
really nice sequined top.
Eddie: My favourite piece of clothing is this jacket.
Frank: My favourite piece of clothing is this because
its got a hood to keep me warm.
Victoria: What do you wear when you want to
dress up?
Grazia: When I want to dress up I wear something
new in my wardrobe.
Frank: Oh, usually one of my uncles old suits is what
I put on when I want to dress up.
Victoria: Im going to a party on Saturday. Thisll look
great. How much is that?
Stall holder: Twenty pounds.
Victoria: Thank you.
Stall holder: Thank you.

There are many different wildlife campaigns to raise
money. A petition is a letter to ask people to support
a campaign. A sponsored walk is an event where
people promise to pay money for every kilometre you
walk. A raffle is an event where you sell tickets and
pick numbers for prizes. A market stall is a type of
shop where you sell things to collect money. You can
also write letters to international organisations or
adopt an animal.

My heart pumps blood around my body. The blood
flows along my arteries and veins. It flows away from
my heart along my arteries. It flows back to my heart
along my veins. My arteries carry oxygen. My veins
carry carbon dioxide. My brain controls my heart beat
automatically. The part of the brain that controls my
heart beat is called the brain stem.

Dear Mum,
Thank you for your letter, it arrived yesterday. My
journey was very exciting. I arrived at the rescue centre
on Sunday. The weather in Thailand is hot and humid.
I started work on Monday. Yesterday I washed the
elephants and I fed the tigers.
Tomorrow I am going to build a tree house for the
monkeys. A monkey called Joe is my favourite animal.
I am having a lovely time. Send my love to Dad.

Last year Helen worked for an Animal Rescue Centre. She slept in a tent. She started
work at 8 oclock. First, she cleaned the monkeys huts and then she fed all the
animals. At 11 oclock she walked to the lake. She couldnt drive through the jungle.
It took half an hour. She washed the elephants and then walked back to the centre
for lunch. She didnt work in the afternoon because it was often rainy and windy.
In the evening she studied in her room. Next year, she is going to go to a different
centre in a different biome. She is going to study a different endangered species.

the clouds. It rains. The rain falls into the river. The
river flows down into the sea. When its very cold it
snows. When the snow melts it flows into the river.
Sometimes the snow freezes into icebergs.
