Florida Geography Study Guide

The Test will be on Friday, September 30, 2016


Know the following:
-Floridas climate is mostly hot and humid
-Florida is a Peninsula, it is surrounded by water on three sides
-The top part of Florida is called the Panhandle
-Key West is Floridas most southern point
-Most cities in Florida are located near a body of water
-Rivers are important because they provide transportation and water for plants and
animals
-The Everglades is a vast wetland in the southern tip of Florida and home to many plants
and animals
-Gulf Coastal Plain is located along the Gulf Coast and is made up of flat grassland and
wetland areas.
-The Uplands are located in the central part of Florida and the panhandle and contain
forests and gentle hills.
-The Atlantic Coastal Plain lies along the east coast of Florida and contains flat grasslands
and wetland areas.
Vocabulary
Climate- the pattern of weather in a certain area
Precipitation- any type of water that falls to Earth
Latitude- lines that measure how far north or south a place is from the Equator
Longitude- lines that measure how far east and west a place is from the Prime Meridian
Hurricane- a severe storm that has high winds
Storm Surge- a wind-driven wall of seawater that floods coastal areas
Map Legend- tells what the symbols on the map mean
Compass Rose- shows the cardinal and intermediate directions on a map
