EMG PICKUPS

The original concept and intent in designing the first EMGs was to create a pickup that
translated an instruments tone more realistically with improved characteristics; making
the instrument play and sound more musical. Weve created a line of pickups that speaks to
what musicians in the real world are asking for: versatility, reliability, responsiveness, and
great all around tone. There truly is no comparison between EMGs and other conventional
pickups on the market today. EMGs have a much broader frequency response thats better
for capturing harmonics, chord definition, individual notes, and overall dynamics. We never
forget that a pickup is a product of a good design recipe which directly affects the type of
music you play and how you play it. Included here are some of the elements of our design
considerations which ultimately influence the final result.

String Interface & Magnet

The first choice in pickup design is the string interface. The selection
of a bar magnet or individual pole pieces is an important one. All initial
EMG designs used a bar magnet for two reasons. First, pole pieces
place too much magnetism under the strings and cause lower ones
to go out of pitch, with a Doppler effect, and second, pole pieces
can also make intonation and tuning difficult. Designs featuring a
bar magnet have a much more linear (balanced) output from string
to string. Their attack is less pronounced than the pole piece design
resulting in smoother distortion, less fade on string bending, and
much better sustain.
By relying on the internal preamp for gain, the bar magnet can be
smaller, further limiting the magnetic pull on the strings. The
inherent qualities of a bar magnet allow a continuous magnetic field
that allows for any string spacing which is perfect for use with any
multi-stringed instrument. On the other hand, if you prefer pole
pieces, there is an EMG model to meet your needs. Pole pieces impart
a much more percussive attack giving the pickup more of an organic
sound. Depending on the model, steel pole pieces (either bar or
screw/stud), can be coupled with alnico or ceramic magnets, each
combination having individual characteristics that affect the attack,
output, frequency response and ultimately the tone of the pickup.

Tone Modeling / Coils / Preamp

Each active EMG pickup has two coils and they are the basis of the
pickups design. There are different types and sizes of magnet wire
that can be used, and combining their attributes with the size and
shape of the coil has a tremendous effect on the tone. The dualcoil setup is necessary for noise reduction and is a key to providing
the distinctive EMG tone. The preamplifier used inside each active
EMG pickup is no ordinary preamp. Built directly into each pickup,
the preamp is an integral part of the pickup design ensuring quality
of sound performance, incredible noise reduction, and simplicity in

installation. A natural byproduct of the preamp is gain. It allows us

to design a pickup for its particular tone without concern for the
pickups output. EMG pickups use tone modeling to manipulate the
two coils. This innovation allows us to shape a mix of the reactive
slope and resonance from each of the two coils. The idea is to achieve
a complex mixture of each coils phase and frequency response
resulting in a richer overall tone. After the coils are modeled, any
amount of output needed is provided by the preamp.

Dual Resonance & Lo-Flux

The most important aspect governing the tone of any pickup is

its resonant frequency. EMGs exclusive impedance modeling
technique allows us to create a complex mix of primary and secondary
resonances from the coils. Combining dual resonant frequencies
is an innovation which enables us to model the sound of every EMG
pickup by shaping the response curve of each coil. By blending the
dual resonances with the low, mid, and high frequency gain from
the coils, a unique tone has been created for each EMG pickup.
This means that the sound is vibrantly alive with more harmonics
than is otherwise possible with conventional single resonance high
impedance pickups.

PJX Set

Various magnetic materials are used in EMG pickups to customize the

interface between the strings and coils. Common to all EMG pickups
are our single or dual-pole magnetic designs, which concentrate the
magnetic field evenly under all the strings. The result is an improved
linear output from the strings and a more consistent attack from
note to note. With abundant gain available from the preamp, EMG
pickups do not require increased magnetic strength for greater
output. Rather, the magnetic materials are chosen to highlight the
tone of the pickups. All EMG pickups use a lo-flux magnetic field to
promote the natural sustain and harmonics of the instrument. These
design advantages allow us to utilize specialty materials and alloys
in a way that gives each EMG pickup a unique character.

Noise Reduction & Low Impedance

Another benefit from the internal preamp is noise reduction. By

integrating the preamp into the housing, all the elements of the
pickup can be shielded. By matching the coils to a high degree
through impedance modeling, the low frequency hum and buzz
are virtually eliminated while making the sound more vibrantly
alive. In addition, each EMG is housed in a composite cover cap that
eliminates all other forms of interference.

Most EMG pickup models have noise figures better than 85dB, still
other EMG pickups achieve a noise figure that exceeds 100dB. The
low impedance output of the EMG internal preamp provides other
great features. You can run a cable for up to 100 feet (30 meters)
without losing high frequency response. Youll get the same tone
with a wireless unit as you do with a cable, and the tone of your
instrument will remain consistent through volume changes. Low
impedance also means that not only can you plug directly into your
favorite amp, you can go direct to a tape preamp (especially useful
for acoustic guitar recording) or mixing console input without a
direct box. EMG pickups are so quiet you dont even need to ground
the strings of the instrument!

Construction & Ease Of Installation

There is no other pickup built as well as an EMG. The coils are

precision wound, matched both resistively and inductively and
vacuum-sealed. All internal preamplifiers use Surface Mount
Technology (SMT) for quality and reliability, each pickup is tested
before encapsulation and shipping. An instrument equipped with
EMG active pickups require power from a single 9 Volt battery, and in
fact a single battery will power as many EMG pickups and accessory
circuits as you can fit into your guitar. Power to the pickups is
turned off by simply unplugging the cable from your instrument. EMG
pickups are easy to install. Included with each pickup are prewired
volume and tone controls, battery clip, output jack and diagrams.

All models are designed for direct replacement into most standard
instruments. In those instances where direct replacement isnt
possible,
ible, a minimum of work may be required.

while retaining superior dynamics. Models available for guitar and
bass feature EMGs revolutionary (patent pending) Solderless
Install System. This system puts the player in complete control by
simplifying the process of installation and the upgrading of existing
pickups.

ROC

The EMG X Series pickups have an exceptional open nature to their

overall sound. This is due to a newly designed internal preamp which
allows for more gain to come from your amp and instrument, rather
than from the preamp. The effect of this new design is to provide
more headroom and overall body while still maintaining the clarity
and response that EMGs are renowned for. The lows will be rock
solid, the high-mids will shine through and the treble will be sweet
and full.

There truly is no comparison between active EMGs and conventional

pickups. EMGs frequency response is shaped much differently.
Conventional pickups typically exhibit a dry peaky frequency
response, while EMGs have a much broader bandwidth thats
better for harmonic pull-offs and chord definition. Individual notes
have better presence and are dynamic. Playing styles are more
pronounced and different techniques can be easily accommodated.

Active Acoustic Pickups

The perfect mix of EMG technology and design come together in the
ACS Acoustic Sound Hole pickup. Only an active design can deliver
the kind of frequency response, output, and quiet performance
needed in a sound hole pickup. The ACS employs a unique internal
preamp thats been tailored for the phase and frequency response
of an acoustic guitar, enhancing the natural sweet tone of the

instrument. EMG saddle pickups use piezo film in a layered format

(bimorph) that has many advantages over other film designs as well
as piezo crystals. The layering allows a lower output impedance as
well as double the output of other designs. Unlike the crystals, the
film has no resonance in the audible region, so it doesnt have that
annoying harshness inherent in a crystal piezo pickup.

EMG has a history of making passive pickups that dates back to

1984 when we made passive pickups for the Steinberger G Series
instruments. Just by looking at the HZ pickups you can see that
theyre made differently than any other passive pickup. Under
EMGs distinctive cover cap, each HZ pickup is fully shielded, vacuum
sealed and encapsulated to prevent microphonics. In fact, EMG HZ

pickups are probably the quietest passive pickups available. Models

featuring either pole pieces or bar magnet designs are available and
each with a variety of coil designs. The HZ Series features a full line
of humbucking, single coil and bass models for 4, 5 and 6-string

pickups to any number of custom sounds. Many EMG accessories will
work with both passive and active guitars and basses. Some of our
most popular accessories for guitar are the SPC (Presence Control)
