Volunteer Responsibility Projects

Providing the possibility to develop and improve project and learn new tasks
Objectives
Enable volunteers to develop specific skills and work on a single project related to our objectives in order to feel accomplishment
Utilize volunteer skills so that each volunteer have the possibility to use the skills they bring
to our base
Enable further training and development within a field of interest
Decorate and further improve living standard on base
Summary
In order to make sure that all tasks that had to be done on a weekly basis still would be made but also
in order to encourage development and utilize volunteer skills, the staff team introduces Volunteer
Responsibility Projects (VRPs). The VRPs aim to inspire and encourage volunteers to pick up a personal project for their time at base, allowing them to learn new skills but also focus on a specific area
where they have more knowledge.

Report
Each staff member introduced 5 projects or activities each, adding up to a total of 20 activities. Examples of tasks could be to check fire alarms, fire extinguishers and first aid kits, decorating the house or
developing the curriculum used for out classrooms etc. This kind of project touches upon a number of
long-term, mid-term and short-term objectives. The main ones to point out could be our goal to utilize
volunteer skills so they feel that the knowledge they bring is used in the most efficient way. To work
on the curriculums is related to the objective of improving access to education and wellness in El Cocal
community.
The importance of a personal project is that each volunteer get to use their own skills, they get the
possibility to leave their own mark and lastly never stop developing our hub. By always scheduling a
certain amount of time that each week will be used only for developing different areas of our project
makes it possible for us to remain inspired but also have the time to carry through ideas we get
throughout the week.

One of the projects have been to have more plants around

the house. Our intern Elena has done so by first painting and
decorating used tires, as well as attaching a bottom to the tire
so that no soil will spill. She then planted seeds in smaller baskets, which later will be moved and re-planted into the tires.
Another project has been to check first aid kits. This has provided knowledge of different type of medications, when these
would be used as well as some Spanish vocab of the different
medications. Others have learnt how to check fire extinguishers and fire alarms, while others have been busy painting a
world map together with different suggestions of how we can
be more sustainable.
A mural outside the house has also been developed, which
has made it more colorful. All in all the VRPs are proving to be
a great way for volunteers to contribute more to the objectives and gain more skills while they are here.
