12th Grade AP World Literature

Week 4: September 25-29, 2016

We spent last week buried in our novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude by
Gabriel Garca Marquez. We became familiar with the Buenda family, Garca
Marquezs writing style, and the historical grounding for the novel.
This week we are moving forward within the novel to learn more about the
Buenda family as politics and modernization come to Macondo. We will
examine how one builds a world of magical realism and what the impacts of this
are. We will also focus on the novels shift away from certain character tropes
and its portrayal of a more diverse cast of characters than many traditional
novels. We will also focus on the relationship between literature and history, and
how each influences the other, through a comparative literature study from the
region.

Specific concepts: Character tropes (and lack thereof); history and identity;
magical realism and narrative.

Texts: One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garca Mrquez; The Solitude
of Latin America by Gabriel Garca Marquez, Discoverers and The Chosen Ones
by Pablo Neruda.

Assignments: Reading response; quiz on Thursday

Looking ahead: continuing a conversation about One Hundred Years of Solitude

and magical realism in a historical and cultural context
