Prlogo / Prologue_____________________________________
Uruguaya.
Ros, Pedro Ferreira, Alfredo Zitarrosa, Jos Carbajal "El
Sabalero", Eduardo Mateo, Ruben Rada, Jaime Roos, Hugo
tradicionales: chico, repique y piano.
Uruguay.
Over the years, artists such as Romeo Gavioli, Lgrima Ros,
Pedro Ferreira, Alfredo Zitarrosa, Jos Carbajal "El Sabalero,"
Eduardo Mateo, Ruben Rada, Jaime Roos, Hugo Fattoruso,
and Jorginho Gularte (to name a few of the most renowned)
have employed this indigenous rhythm in their compositions.
Candombe is an Afro-American rhythm identified with Uruguay
in the same way that the Samba is identified with Brazil; the
Rumba, the Cha-Cha-Ch and the Son with Cuba; the Bomba
and Plena with Puerto Rico; and the Merengue with the Dominican Republic, etc.
"El toque de Candombe," is an introduction to Afro-Uruguayan
rhythms, demonstrating how the three traditional drums (the
chico, repique and piano) are played, and their application to
the styles known as "candombe cancin" (candombe Song)
and "candombe funk" (or fusion) for drums and bass.
This book consists of three parts or chapters in order to provide
the clearest possible explanation for each instrument.
In Chapter 1, the percussionist, Hugo "Foca" Machado, presents candombe as a traditional folk music style, demonstrating how it is played on each of the Afro-Montevidean drums
(chico, repique and piano). He explains the rhythmic patterns
for each, with examples of how they are integrated in the musical ensemble known as the "cuerda de tambores" (drum corps),
an ensemble of marching drummers.
In Chapter 2, Willy Muoz, applies candombe rhythms to the
drumset. His presentation is based on the rhythmic patterns
played on the traditional drums, developing a variety of interpretative possibilities.
In Chapter 3, Jorge Sadi demonstrates how the electric bass is
used to complete the rhythm section, presenting classic bass
lines as well as his own original ideas for this instrument.
With this book, the authors hope to provide musicians and other
interested parties with an authoritative source of information
about the magical rhythm known as "candombe."

he drums are played with a bare hand and stick combination. Usually the stick is held with the right hand while the bare
left hand strikes the head directly.
On the chico drum, the hand-strike involves all four fingers; the
strike is short and sharp, the hand is then lifted and withdrawn,
thus producing a dry-slap effect (photograph 1).
The stick is used to strike the center of the head.
The repique drum is used for improvisation. The rhythmic
phrases encompass a vast array of options combining stick and
hand-strikes, both in the center of the head as well as on the
rim for higher tones (photograph 2).
These rhythmic phrases also include strikes on the side of the
drum (the wood belly) with the stick.
On the piano drum, the bare hand produces an open, resonant
tone by striking directly upon the head, then being immediately
withdrawn. A muffled, or deadened, tone is achieved by maintaining the hand (palm or fingers) pressed to the head after the
strike (photograph 3).
The stick used for playing the piano drum is thick, approximately
1" in diameter by 16" in length. It is used to produce a deep,
sharp sound.
The skins used on the drums are traditionally of cowhide that is
stretched and nailed to the shell. They are tuned by applying
heat, usually with a flame.
For many years now, craftsman have used systems of hoops
and lug tensors to attain more consistent tuning.
According to Hugo "Foca" Machado, the craftsman Emilio
Acevedo was the first to utilize these tensors on the Afro-Uruguayan drums.
As mentioned above, the drums are played while walking and
are suspended by a thick strap called a talig or tali, which is
passed over the right shoulder so that the drum is located just
below the left arm at an angle that enables playing with both
hands.

tambores repiques.
For many years now, there have been two clearly identified styles
in candombe, known as "Cuareim" and "Ansina."
These names were derived from the names of streets in
Montevideo located in the two neighborhoods, Sur and Palermo,
home of the two most important carnival comparsas.
These two neighborhoods developed distinct styles differentiated by the rhythmic patterns played on the piano drum and by
the tempo at which the rhythms are played.
The Cuareim style is the more traditional, played at a more
moderate tempo on the piano drums and alternating subtle
variations between the phrases played on the repique drums.
The Ansina style, on the other hand, is played at a faster tempo
and involves syncopated "repicado" rhythms on the piano drum
that playfully enter a "call and response" dialogue with the
repique drums.
The first two examples (tracks 30 and 31) present the Cuareim
style, played on two chico drums, one repique drum, and one
piano drum (a cuerda of four drums).
The third example (track 32) presents the Ansina style played
by a cuerda composed of three chico drums, two repique drums
and two piano drums (a cuerda of seven drums).

Tumbadoras (Congas) ____________________________
repique y piano.
Percusionistas como Yamand Prez, Ruben Rada,
Jorge Trasante, "Chiche" Cabral, "Boca" Ferreira,
"Cacho" Tejera, Jimmy Santos, Wilson Negreyra,
Fernando "Lobo" Nuez, y Walter "Nego" Haedo,

China
During the 1950s, with the advent and rise in popularity of musical movements such as Jazz, Rock 'n Roll,
Bossa Nova, etc., Uruguayan musicians, influenced by
these new forms, began to develop a style of candombe fusion.
Candombe ceased to pertain exclusively to the setting
of carnival and to become part of the popular music of
Uruguay. This period, extended into the '60s, and saw
the emergence of numerous representative bands such
as Los Shakers, El Kinto and, in the '70s, Totem, to
mention just a few of the most important groups.
Such drummers as Luis Sosa, (of the group El Kinto),
Roberto Galletti and Santiago Ameijenda (drummers at
different times with the group Totem), Jos Luis Prez
in the '80s (with the band Latin Lover in Stockholm,
led by saxophonist, Hctor Bingert), Osvaldo Fattoruso
(with the group, Opa Tro in the United States) and
Gustavo Etchenique (drummer for Jaime Roos), have
developed diverse ways to play the candombe style on
the drum set.
Playing the candombe style on the drum set, while maintaining the madera beat (the clave), may be considered the classical form as well as the most common
practice in the style known as candombe cancion
(candombe song).
The following examples are played over the rhythmic
beat of the madera.
