1. A long foundation wall carries a line load 20 kN/m. The footing for this wall will be located at 2.0 m
depth, and a basement will be excavated such that the anticipated cover to the footing level is 0.3 m.
a) Determine the required strip footing width if the foundation is located in a deep sand deposit with unit
weight 17.5 kN/m 3, a water table at 3 m depth, and a field N value of 5 in the region just below the
planned footing level. Use Peck's method. (5 marks)
