A comparator compares a voltage signal applied to one input of the op-amp with a

known voltage, called the reference voltage applied at the other input.

The comparator consists of an op-amp operated in open-loop,which is fed with two
analog inputs, and it produces one of the two saturation voltages (positive or negative at
the output of the op-amp.
Types Non-inverting comparator and Inverting comparator
Non-inverting comparator

A fixed reference voltage Vref is applied to (-) input and a time varying signal Vi
is applied to the (+) input.
When the non-inverting input Vi is less than the reference voltage Vref, the output
voltage V0 is at +Vsat =+Vcc.
Thus the output Vo changes from one saturation level to another depending on
the voltage difference between Vi and Vref.
