HOMEWORK 2

_______ June 2014

1. (15pts) Calculate the source pressure required to deliver 13x106 standard cubic feet per day
(SCFD) of CO ( = 1.4 ) to a customer 60 mi away. By contract the pressure at the customers
side must be at least 300 psig. The pipe has a 10 in diameter. Long pipelines can be
considered isothermal at the ground temperature of 600F. Standard conditions are 700F and 1
atm.
2. (15pts) Consider the process shown in figure below:

Toluene is pumped at a rate of 400 GPM and at 750F through 3 in OD piping. The dynamic
pressure drop between points 1 and 2 is 9.5 psi and between points 3 and 4 is 3 psi. At
flowing conditions the density of toluene is 54.75 lb/ft3. If the maximum expected flow rate
is 500 GPM and the minimum expected flow rate is 60 GPM, obtain the required Cv, and
select a valve from the catalog of Masonelian 21000 Series Globe Control Valves
(http://www.masoneilan.com/).
Report the properties of the valve selected such as % opening at design conditions. Provide
vendor information to support your selection.
3. (10pts) A five-stage centrifugal compressor with inter-stage cooling is available for delivery
of argon ( = 1.67, MW = 40 ). The gas needs to be compressed from 25 psia at 400F to 100
psia. The polytropic efficiency of the compressor is given as 0.75 and the speed is 8100 rpm
at the maximum head/stage of 12,000 ft. Determine the compressor speed for the specified
compression ratio and the delivery temperature.
4. (10pts) An equal-percentage control valve is placed in a water delivery line ( C v = 50, R = 30 ),
and under design conditions, the pressure drop across the valve is expected to be 17.5 psi. If
the valve is to be 55% open to maintain the design flow rate, what would be this flow rate?
