Call for Papers

Paper Submission Deadline: August 31, 2016

The KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering invites papers for 2017 Special Issue on a topic related to
Design Optimization and Applications in Civil Engineering. Special issues are designed to
provide a platform and give the opportunity to summarize the state-of-the-art on a specific
theme, share new perspectives, and initiate discussion on the latest theoretical research. The
KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering publishes one Special Issue each year.
This open call invites researchers to submit papers for a Special Issue to be published in
February, 2017.

Aim and Scope

Many design optimization problems in civil engineering are highly nonlinear subject to stringent,
complex constraints. Thus, sophisticated optimization methods are needed to find solutions to
such challenging optimization problems. One of the main goals of a civil engineer is to find a
balanced design in terms of economy, security and practicality. For such reasons, optimization is
an active research area with an increasing number of publications and interests, and researchers
usually try to find better solutions than the previous existing solutions to the same type of
problem in the literature. In most research activities, researchers strive to develop new
approaches to solve existing challenging problems or try to explore new design topics by using
appropriate design methods.
In recent years, one of the main trends for new and alternative methods is to use natureinspired metaheuristic algorithms for solving challenging optimization problems. Generally
speaking, these metaheuristic optimization algorithms are simple and versatile, and yet flexible
and efficient enough to deal with highly complex design problems. This Special Issue of the KSCE
Journal of Civil Engineering aims to provide a timely review of the latest developments
concerning novel optimization methods and new applications in civil engineering. The focus will
be on novel approaches, new methods, new design applications and cross-disciplinary
applications.
Researchers are invited to submit their latest research on the following topics (but not limited to):

New and novel approaches and methods for solving optimization problems
Evolutionary algorithms, metaheuristic techniques, bio-inspired computing
Swarm intelligence, fuzzy methods, hybrid methods in soft computing
New applications and new designs in civil engineering
New research in any areas closely related to optimization and engineering designs
