This!was!ensured!through!thorough!exercises!making!
sure!all!individuals!are!competent!to!continue.!Always!
tried!to!keep!moral!high!and!an!aspect!of!fun,!this!was!to!
safeguard!enjoyment,!consistency!and!ongoing!
participation!in!future!weeks.!
My!coaching!lesson!intends!to!progress!the!basic!skills!of!
volleyball!learnt!in!the!first!coaching!session,!including!
introducing!setting!and!spiking,!and!progressing!digging.!
This!will!be!done!through!various!activities!and!mini!
games.!The!session!is!intended!to!be!fun!and!engaging!
and!inclusive.!
The!focus!of!my!session!is!to!introduce!court!formations!
and!some!simple!tactics.!Understanding!both!of!these!
aspects!allow!the!team!to!read!and!confuse!the!opponent!
better!to!increase!scoring!potential.!The!lesson!will!also!
recap!on!basic!skill!knowledge!including!the!serve,!spike,!
dig!and!set!as!they!form!the!foundations!for!the!tactics!to!
be!successful.!Team!work!will!be!a!major!key!to!this!
lesson!as!we!practice!mini!games!with!the!tactics!to!
mimic!a!game!situation.!
The!focus!of!my!session!will!be!to!introduce!new!
competition!rules*!Block!rule!and!3!and!over!(double!
points).!In!the!beginning!we!will!clarify!these!rules!and!
practice!to!improve!our!skills.!This!session!will!also!focus!

realise!how!competent!my!group!was!in!terms!of!the!basic!skill!in!serving!and!

introduced!and!attempted!to!focus!on.!They!also!felt!that!the!lesson!was!a!bit!
informal.!The!lesson!strayed!slightly!from!the!plan!and!it!was!suggested!that!the!

This!session!provided!very!pleasing!results.!The!team!worked!exceptionally!well!
at!listening!to!the!instructions!I!was!giving!and!showed!a!genuine!interest!in!
succeeding.!!
Pros:!It!became!evident!as!the!team!began!to!practice!the!formations!and!tactics!
that!their!skill!level!was!ready!for!the!lesson!I!had!planned.!The!players!present!
were!fully!engaged!to!learn!the!new!skills!and!behaved!respectfully.!When!it!
came!to!learning!tactics!the!slow!approach!to!break!it!down!was!highly!
successful.!Being!amateur!volleyball!players!having!only!just!started!to!grasp!the!
skills!this!allowed!for!an!understanding!of!the!process!to!occur!before!trying!to!
use!it!to!score!points.!This!kept!the!team!focused!on!the!skill!rather!than!scoring!
to!start!with!as!well.!The!code!word!approach!for!the!tactics!worked!well!as!it!
allowed!us!to!put!a!personal!spin!on!the!game!making!everyone!want!to!be!
involved.!!
Cons:!Unfortunately!only!2!of!our!team!members!showed!up!for!the!first!
15minutes!of!the!session.!This!made!some!of!the!activities!hard!to!do!due!to!such!
minimal!numbers.!As!the!coach!I!stepped!in!as!a!player!so!there!were!enough!
people!and!explained!whilst!participating!which!seemed!successful.!However!I!
should!have!considered!the!placements!and!camps!that!were!occurring!and!
planned!for!a!smaller!group!perhaps!to!make!it!easier!to!teach.!!

Touchy!subject!week!seven!was.!Learning!the!right!ways!in!which!to!include!girls!
in!sport!whilst!not!patronizing!them!with!a!sport!they!do!not!feel!as!comfortable!
with!i.e.!afl!&!rugby.!Although!yes!some!sports!may!be!one!sided,!it!is!important!
to!include!all!members!of!the!classroom!including!both!genderTbiased!
classrooms!as!well!as!different!skill!level.!By!doing!this,!the!classroom!can!
experience!a!more!fun,!diverse!approach!into!learning!where!by!participation!
levels!are!still!high!and!students!feel!engaged!within!the!activity!regardless!of!
whether!it!has!been!altered!or!not.!I!also!feel!as!if!these!so!called!issues!are!not!
actually!issues,!more!so!a!maturity!manor.!As!students!become!older,!they!begin!
to!realise!the!enjoyment!is!not!only!in!friendly!competition!but!also!in!seeing!
everyone!participate!and!having!a!good!time!using!teamwork.!Emily's!week!of!
teaching!went!well!going!over!the!whole!gameplay!side!of!things,!working!
through!serving,!digging,!setting!and!some!spiking.!This!lesson!was!really!the!
foundation!that!leads!into!separate!plays!that!could!be!performed!depending!on!
the!circumstance.!This!week!would!have!been!nice!to!partner!up!with!another!
team!during!practice!to!both!benefits.!

Week$Eight$$Assessment$in$SE$
In!this!lecture,!we!were!able!to!distinguish!all!the!pros!and!cons!of!different!ways!
to!assess!performance.!Both!formative!and!summative!assessments!are!effective!
ways!to!assess!performance.!It!was!interesting!to!note!that!with!third!party!
testing,!participants!may!have!a!change!in!behavior!or!altered!behavior,!as!they!
are!aware!of!their!performance!being!recorded.!This!lecture!seemed!to!have!had!
an!affect!in!the!practical!of!this!lesson!with!students!indicating!that!yes!we!
actually!are!being!recorded!in!our!volleyball!sessions.!Week!8!was!Ashs!lesson!
and!this!week!we!worked!on!set!plays!as!well!as!backing!up!a!blocker.!This!week!
was!more!intense!learning!that!there!is!a!lot!more!to!the!simple!basics!of!
volleyball!and!how!with!these,!success!can!be!achieved.!!

Week$Nine$$Festivities$&$Limitations$In$SE$$
When!creating!teams,!there!must!be!an!element!of!festivity.!An!element!to!make!
it!yours,!individual!and!creative.!Some!examples!could!be:!uniform!colours,!name!
of!team,!mascot,!awards/trophies!and!photos.!Simple!things!such!as!certificates!
can!be!such!a!big!positive!impact!in!a!participants!decision!whether!to!continue!

worthwhile!coaches!go!to!the!effort!to!ensure!ongoing!support!and!for!the!club!

an!interesting!warmTup!including!the!song!get!low!to!help!us!stay!low!with!our!

reinforcing!blocking!and!backing!up.!This!week!was!really!a!recap!of!all!sessions!

The!lecture!was!on!an!overview!of!classes!and!readings,!as!well!as!touching!on!
the!exam!and!how!to!prepare.!As!for!the!practical,!well,!what!fun!that!was.!An!
amazing!effort!by!everyone!to!get!around!the!organisation!of!everything!
including!food,!drinks!and!banners.!It!was!a!total!success!with!obvious!
improvements!noticed!in!all!teams!over!the!season.!Best!of!all,!the!TestTEagles!
took!out!the!win.!Did!this!mean!anything?!Of!course!not,!the!amazing!
atmosphere!and!sportsmanship!between!all!players!was!amazing!and!truly!a!

For!the!first!week!of!our!sport!and!physical!activity!education!classes!we!were!
introduced!to!the!teachers!of!our!unit!and!the!concept!of!Sport!Education!(SE)!as!
a!Physical!Education!(PE)!curriculum.!The!advantages!of!SE!were!discussed!
during!our!tutorial!class!and!the!lecture,!but!without!knowing!much!about!the!
curriculum!model!or!seeing!it!implemented,!I!was!sceptical!as!to!whether!or!not!
it!was!effective.!Having!said!that,!I!still!participated!in!the!class!discussion!and!
online!lectures,!and!learnt!about!some!of!the!basic!differences!between!SE!and!
PE!and!the!key!goals!of!SE!(Being:!Competent,!Literate!and!Enthusiastic).!A!sport!
education!season!has!six!key!areas!of!difference!to!traditional!PE!curricula!which!
are!seasons,!affiliation,!formal!competition,!culminating!events,!keeping!records!
and!festivities.!The!objectives!of!the!SE!season!were!further!discussed!in!the!

During!week!7!and!8!I!was!on!my!secondary!school!placement!rounds.!The!
school!I!was!placed!in!implemented!a!multiTactivity!PE!model.!I!found!being!
involved!with!this!SE!unit!and!others!left!me!questioning!the!implementation!of!
the!multiTactivity!curriculum!in!this!school.!I!questioned!whether!these!units!of!
PE!were!beneficial!or!not,!as!we!had!often!discussed!the!disadvantages!of!such!
units.!During!this!weeks!lecture!different!issues!with!multiTactivity!programs!
were!mentioned!and!the!advantages!of!the!SE!model!advised,!such!as!greater!
responsibility,!higher!inclusion,!and!an!emphasis!on!fun!and!enjoyment.!The!
opinions!of!the!school!I!was!placed!in!were!that!SE!was!a!bit!of!a!fad!and!multiT
activity!gave!students!better!sporting!opportunities,!which!I!found!interesting.!
This!school!in!particular!administers!a!large!sports!program,!including!

late!to!Chloes!session!because!of!various!issues,!however!this!was!disrespectful!
and!questioned!my!punctuality!standards!and!commitment!to!my!team.!I!joined!
into!the!session!very!near!the!end!and!through!the!feedback!provided,!it!seemed!
like!my!teammates!had!enjoyed!the!session!and!it!had!been!beneficial!for!all.!
Jess!session!followed!this!and!focused!on!improving!offensive!skills,!building!
teamTplay!and!increasing!teamwork.!The!drills!were!advanced!and!included!all!
the!skills!of!volleyball!in!various!layouts!and!sequences.!Because!of!placement!I!
hadnt!attended!class!for!three!weeks!and!it!felt!like!my!volleyball!skills!had!

supportive!of!teammates,!positive!and!enthusiastic!throughout.!Our!gameplay!
was!inconsistent!and!I!felt!I!had!played!badly,!however!our!team!still!seemed!to!
have!a!good!time,!which!is!one!of!the!key!factors!of!the!SE!model,!having!fun.!My!
efforts!and!grading!this!week!were!marked!down!to!somewhere!between!a!1!and!
2.!I!engaged!in!the!class!material!through!the!lecture!which!concentrated!on!
assessment!and!the!importance!of!assessment!to!the!teaching!practice.!Different!
types!of!assessment!were!discussed!including!summative!and!formative!

festivity!at!the!culmination!of!the!season.!My!efforts!today!during!gameplay!and!

The!TestTEagles,!victorious.!This!week,!prior!to!attending!class,!my!attitude!
towards!the!SE!unit!was!negative.!I!am!overloaded!in!university!study!and!
further!outside!work!commitments,!however,!when!I!arrived!the!morning!of!our!
culminating!events!and!festivities!I!found!my!team!very!positive!and!keen!to!win!
the!tournament,!this!led!to!a!change!in!my!attitude!for!the!better.!Our!side!lost!
the!first!game!of!the!day!but!finished!3rd!and!qualified!for!the!first!final,!against!
the!second!placed!team.!We!won!this!final!and!progressed!to!the!grand!final,!
where!we!surprisingly!once!again!played!like!stars!and!won!comfortably.!
Everyone!contributed!and!we!played!very!well!as!a!team,!sharing!the!ball!around!

Summing!up!the!season,!our!team!went!through!highs!and!lows!but!always!
stayed!positive!and!enthusiastic.!We!ended!the!season!well,!pulling!together!to!
be!competent,!literate!and!enthusiastic!sports!people!in!a!great!team!
environment.!The!sports!education!unit!may!be!viable!in!the!PE!curricula!but!
maybe!not!in!all!schools?!I!can!easily!see!the!positives!that!the!unit!can!provide:!

The!Sport!Education!(SE)!Model!developed!by!Seidentop!provides!an!

and!festivity!make!for!a!more!student!centered!game!approach!to!including!
physical!activity!in!the!school!curriculum.!With!SE!providing!the!students!with!

teacher,!as!well!as!a!former!PE!student,!SE!is!appealing!in!the!sense!that!it!allows!

enthusiast!myself,!I!still!recall!days!where!I!would!deliberately!pretend!I'd!
forgotten!my!uniform!so!that!I!didn't!have!participate!in!the!painfully!boring!

a!proper!game!of.!Especially!in!a!high!school!setting!I!believe!an!SE!program!
would!have!been!a!far!more!inclusive!and!exciting!form!of!physical!education.!!

Modification!of!games!and!activities!is!a!central!feature!of!SE!ensuring!all!players!
have!an!equal!chance!at!success.!It!is!difficult!in!a!sense!to!cater!for!the!needs!of!
all!involved!in!the!session,!especially!if!you!are!focusing!on!a!sport!others!play!
recreationally!who!dont!view!the!modified!versions!as!being!real.!However!
modifying!games!and!activities!can!be!done!so!to!still!be!enjoyable!and!beneficial!

scoring!easier,!slowing!down!the!movement!of!the!objects,!increasing!the!

individual!skills!before!playing!a!game!on!the!final!week.!The!issue!here!was!that!

from!penalty!position!but!due!to!only!participating!in!isolation!from!other!skills!

During!my!experience!in!a!traditional!PE!setting!we!would!arrive!at!each!lesson!
with!everything!pre!prepared!by!the!teacher.!Cones!set!out,!uniforms!ready!etc.!
All!that!was!required!of!the!students!was!to!attend!and!participate.!Differing!
from!this!in!SE!programs!is!the!allocation!of!specific!student!roles!and!
responsibilities.!The!importance!of!these!roles!is!to!allow!all!participants!to!
experience!all!aspects!of!the!sport,!not!just!the!player.!These!roles!are!dependent!
on!class!size!and!based!on!learning!outcomes!of!the!season!with!both!the!
teachers!and!students!involved!in!the!roles!needed!and!the!allocation!of!them.!
The!roles!of!an!SE!season!at!each!session!include,!player,!referee!&!scorekeeper.!
Unlike!my!previous!experience!during!this!weeks!session!(the!first!round!of!
competition)!the!session!began!with!us!setting!up!the!courts!and!arranging!into!
our!teams.!As!we!rotated!each!participant!played!up!to!4!games!and!observed,!
scored!and!refereed!the!games!in!play!on!their!bye!matches.!Being!able!to!
experience!all!of!these!roles!allowed!for!a!sense!of!ownership!of!the!event!and!a!
deeper!understanding!of!rules,!tactics!v!and!the!opposition!as!well!as!yourself!as!
a!player.!This!weeks!session!also!introduced!the!first!round!of!coaches.!Our!
coach!displayed!great!understanding!of!modification!to!suit!the!skill!level.!The!
team!was!rather!low!on!ability!due!to!minimal!volleyball!experience!so!the!coach!
after!actively!demonstrating!effective!technique,!created!a!simplified!3!on!3!
games.!This!involved!one!person!serving!to!someone!to!dig!and!then!to!someone!
to!set!and!then!rotating!at!an!increasing!speed.!Allowing!for!the!game!feel!but!on!
a!smaller!scale!with!specific!skills.!This!could!then!be!transferred!to!our!game!
play!with!an!increased!understanding!of!the!skills!and!how!to!use!them!together.!!!

Week$5:$Designing$Competition$Formats$+$Round$2$
This!weeks!class!saw!a!good!progression!from!the!previous!weeks!coaching!
session,!allowing!for!further!active!and!contextTbased!practice!of!volleyball!skills!

In!the!last!few!weeks!the!'fair!play'!point!system!was!introduced!to!try!and!
reduce!the!amount!if!make!dominance!and!negative!comments!occurring!
throughout!the!games.!Considering!this!in!regards!to!the!topic!of!gender!and!
ability!I!believe!it!was!a!really!effective!way!of!coping!with!the!issue.!Even!in!a!
traditional!PE!lesson!I!think!this!is!something!that!needs!more!focus.!I!recall!in!
high!school!being!excited!and!enthusiastic!towards!our!focus!sport!of!soccer!and!
was!avidly!participating,!only!to!have!the!dominant!males!call!out!insults!such!as!
'cherry!picker',!'wannabe'!and!'try!hard',!when!all!I!was!trying!to!do!was!my!best.!
Unfortunately!being!the!only!girl!trying!to!play!it!was!obvious!and!easily!
targeted.!However!I!did!understand!why!the!other!females!and!even!some!males!
didn't!bother!to!try,!because!the!males!were!so!dominating!and!supposedly!more!
skilful!that!you!didn't!get!much!play!even!if!you!wanted.!!

Using!the!SE!model!that!tends!to!target!the!use!of!nonTgender!specific!sports!and!
ones!that!aren't!familiar!to!the!students!assists!in!reducing!this!issue.!Whilst!I!
have!noticed!some!mild!male!domination!in!our!sessions!there!are!only!a!select!
few!doing!so.!My!team!is!even!in!both!genders!yet!I!feel!we!are!all!getting!equal!

Week$8:$Assessment$in$SE$+$Round$4$
Although!absent!from!this!weeks!session!the!team!coherence!and!
communication!made!it!easy!to!understand!what!had!occurred!during!the!
session.!After!announcement!last!week!of!the!'3!and!over'!rule!and!the!new!
blocking!rule!the!coach!did!an!exceptional!job!at!creating!a!lesson!that!both!
enhanced!the!skill!levels!of!the!players!whilst!also!focusing!on!developing!
knowledge!on!the!new!rules!and!how!to!put!them!into!practice!effectively.!Being!
able!to!tell!this!purely!from!the!lesson!plan!and!conversation!really!enforced!the!
need!for!excellent!lesson!planning!and!descriptive!content.!This!is!something!I!
need!to!work!on.!Whilst!my!plan!was!effective!for!me!to!use!it!would!not!have!
been!detailed!enough!for!someone!else!to!pick!up!and!use!unlike!the!one!used!his!
week.!

!The!content!of!assessment!used!in!SE!this!week!was!similar!to!that!we!have!seen!
in!previous!units!throughout!uni,!yet!still!highly!informative!in!regards!to!how!
you!can!effectively!use!them!to!monitor!SE.!A!major!benefit!this!week!highlighted!
about!an!SE!program!is!that!whilst!there!is!a!lot!of!forward!planning!prior!to!
begging!of!a!season!for!the!teacher,!once!the!season!is!structured!and!the!
students!are!conducting!the!major!elements!themselves!the!teacher!is!able!to!
observe!and!give!effective!and!accurate!feedback!and!assessment!of!their!
students.!Not!only!are!the!children!benefiting!from!understanding!all!the!
elements!of!a!sport!but!it!allows!the!teacher!to!carefully!monitor!and!asses!their!
progress!and!in!turn!provide!support!and!encouragement!fro!further!
development.!

Week$9:$Festivities$and$the$Culminating$Event$+$Round$5$
With!the!season!drawing!to!a!close,!the!talk!of!festivities!was!in!full!force.!There!
is!something!about!the!concept!of!a!celebration!that!gets!people!really!excited!
the!mood!instantly!lifts.!After!spending!a!season!developing!a!team!and!working!
together!towards!success!it!is!exciting!that!an!SE!program!acknowledges!that!
this!is!something!to!be!celebrated.!With!sport!naturally!having!a!festive!culture!
with!massive!ceremonies!for!events!such!as!the!Olympics!and!even!campaigns!
for!public!holidays!to!allow!celebration!for!the!finals!of!the!AFL!season!and!SE!
focusing!in!giving!a!'real'!representation!of!the!sport!it!is!important!to!include!
festivities!as!well.!Having!something!to!strive!for!gives!teams!a!reason!to!connect!
and!work!harder!in!order!to!achieve!working!as!a!motivating!factor.!

After!the!last!8!weeks!of!learning!and!understanding!the!benefits!of!an!SE!
program!the!readings!and!lectures!this!week!highlighted!the!opinions!of!two!
authors!that!disagree!with!the!use!of!these!programs.!Shehu!(1998)!presents!his!
view!on!the!model!acknowledging!it!but!faulting!it!in!many!ways.!He!claims!that!
the!subject!matter!of!physical!education!cannot!be!reduced!to!sport!nor!to!any!
other!form!of!physical!activity!the!problem!facing!physical!education!arises!not!
so!much!from!the!multiactivity!of!its!programme!structures!as!from!the!image!of!
sport!inflicted!on!PE!and!that!to!juxtapose!sport!education!against!a!'dominant!
model'!is!to!make!a!mistake.!He!also!states!that!with!sport!education,!only!the!
competitive!students!are!catered!for.!However!I!feel!there!is!a!competitive!side!
to!all!of!us!and!if!structured!carefully!to!promote!a!fun!and!meaningful!
competition!it!can!be!enjoyable!for!all.!!

Week$12:$FINALS$
The!past!12!weeks!have!flown!by.!The!finals!weeks!content!revolved!around!a!
summary!of!the!12!weeks!and!valuable!information!for!exam!study.!Initially!my!
thoughts!towards!the!SEPEP!program!were!positive!however!lacking!
understanding!as!to!how!such!a!complex!course!work!could!be!run!entirely!by!
students!in!the!class!time.!After!completing!the!unit!I!am!now!fully!aware!that!
this!is!achievable!through!specific!planning!and!conferencing!between!teacher!
and!students.!My!coaching!session!emphasized!the!importance!of!this,!whilst!the!
session!ran!smoothly!and!effectively!it!lacked!planning!having!come!off!the!back!
of!a!sea!kayaking!trip!the!day!before!I!had!not!produced!a!lesson!plan!to!the!best!
of!my!ability!and!this!showed!in!my!marks.!Concluding!the!season!and!playing!
the!final!matches!I!became!aware!of!how!much!I!had!learned!about!a!completely!
foreign!sport,!regarding!all!the!elements!not!just!physical!skill!in!the!sport.!
Looking!back!a!lot!of!hard!work!and!effort!was!out!into!the!running!of!the!
season,!especially!by!the!sports!board.!But!in!the!end!the!results!were!positive!
making!it!a!worthwhile!experience.!In!the!future!it,!if!possible!I!feel!it!would!be!
beneficial!to!have!all!the!weeks!run!back!to!back!especially!in!a!school!setting!to!
maintain!enthusiasm!and!so!skills!and!concepts!arent!forgotten!(obviously!not!
possible!at!uni!with!camps!and!placement!plying!a!part).!The!celebration,!as!told!
in!the!very!first!week,!was!a!massive!highlight!topped!off!by!being!apart!of!the!
winning!team.!An!excellent,!enjoyable!and!educational!experience.!!

solid!foundation!to!understanding!what!a!SEPEP!is.!At!times!I!found!the!online!
lecture!slightly!hard!to!follow,!possibly!because!of!the!topic!continuously!
changing,!sometimes!moving!too!fast!for!my!liking.!However!I!still!feel!like!I!got!a!
good!grasp!of!the!content.!Before!entering!into!the!classroom!I!was!generally!

lecture!sometimes;!however!I!pause!and!rewind!it!to!recap!over!things!I!missed.!!

This!week!I!was!interested!to!watch!the!online!lectures!and!materials!as!the!
topic!was!one!I!was!more!confident!and!more!familiar!with.!After!reading!the!
Siedentop!text!I!felt!the!goals!and!roles!in!SEPEP!were!quite!clear!to!me,!
especially!the!goals.!Having!the!goals!set!out!in!a!simple!to!read!format!made!this!
clear,!showing!that!each!person!may!have!a!different!role!or!goal!throughout!the!
SEPEP.!Unlike!previous!sport!formats!I!have!taken!part!in,!the!player!is!always!
the!key!focus.!Realising!that!jobs!such!as!referee,!scorekeeper!and!timekeeper!
will!be!also!completed!by!participants!was!a!pleasant!surprise.!Taking!this!
knowledge!into!the!tutorial!was!useful!in!better!understanding!how!to!run!a!
Sport!Education!program.!I!started!thinking!about!the!limitations!and!enabling!
factors!possibly!present!in!a!secondary!school!context,!such!as!motivation!and!
organisation!of!students.!Younger!levels!may!struggle!with!these!aspects!causing!
excess!stress!and!workload!on!the!class!teacher.!
Moving!into!the!coaching!session,!run!by!Hayden,!my!enjoyment!built!
throughout!the!session,!while!my!skills!did!too.!I!have!never!competed!in!
Volleyball!formally!before,!just!during!previous!one!off!classes.!The!coaching!
session!provided!a!solid!foundation!of!multiple!volleyball!skills,!while!building!
team!character,!teamwork,!communication!and!fitness;!key!aspects!of!all!team!
sports.!Throughout!this!session!we!were!always!moving,!keeping!the!session!
interesting!and!appropriate.!The!first!round!of!volleyball!followed!and!my!team!
showed!great!enjoyment!and!skills!while!playing!against!the!other!teams.!We!
worked!well!as!a!team!and!communicated!efficiently,!resulting!in!a!clean!sweep!
of!wins.!Unfortunately!Toni!highlighted!that!as!a!team!we!need!to!be!more!
sharing!and!inclusive,!however!I!think!my!team!were!very!proficient!of!including!

Week!fives!online!activities!were!engaged!in!last!week!and!at!the!time!I!thought!
I!had!a!good!understanding.!This!week!knowledge!of!the!information!seems!a!

never!knew!there!were!so!many!different!aspects!to!consider!when!organising!a!
competition!structure!!The!progressive!competition!format!is!one!I!am!familiar!
with!having!competed!in!progressive!formats!before!and!is!proven!to!work.!One!

This!week!I!let!myself!down!and!did!not!fully!engage!with!the!online!content!due!
to!other!subjects!eating!into!my!Sport!Education!time.!However,!I!did!go!through!
the!slides!and!will!complete!the!lecture!before!the!exam.!However,!gender!ability!
can!sometimes!cause!a!talking!point!and!thinking!about!the!teams!created!in!
Sport!Ed!these!were!obviously!taken!into!consideration.!Teams!were!sorted!into!
gender!even!teams,!while!also!the!skill!level!and!past!Volleyball!experience.!!
We!were!coached!this!week!by!Em,!who!showed!confidence!in!teaching!our!
team.!The!session!focused!on!tactics!and!plays,!which!proved!to!be!very!
interesting,!funny!and!enjoyable.!We!spend!the!majority!of!the!time!being!taught!
the!plays!and!tactics!and!practicing!them!on!the!court,!but!without!an!opposition.!
During!the!competition!phase!we!used!these!plays!and!tactics,!which!also!
amused!our!opponents.!The!effectiveness!of!the!tactics!may!be!questionable,!but!
defiantly!did!work!sometimes.!
!After!being!away!the!week!before,!I!hadnt!helped!much!with!the!sports!board,!
however!assisted!during!the!session!to!clarify!rules!and!ensure!the!session!ran!
smoothly.!Next!week!I!am!due!to!coach,!and!following!this!weeks!session!I!have!
noted!that!we!need!to!work!on!defensive!plays,!3!and!over!rules,!blocking!and!
effective!spiking.!I!look!forward!to!coaching!the!team!and!another!enjoyable!

This!week!was!by!far!the!busiest!week!leading!up!to!the!Monday!class,!with!
preparation!in!full!swing!for!the!finals!and!celebrations.!Conversations!between!
Annabel!and!Tim!have!been!constant;!trying!to!organise!a!successful!end!of!
season!festive.!The!feeling!amongst!us!is!that!the!celebration!phase!may!not!be!
what!we!are!expecting,!however!I!am!sure!everyone!will!enjoy!the!end!of!season!
festive.!My!biggest!fear!is!people!not!bringing!their!assigned!food!/!drink!to!
share!although!the!constant!reminders!through!the!Facebook!page!should!
remind!people.!
Sunday!was!spent!making!certificates,!organising!trophies!and!ribbons!and!
preparing!mini!medals!for!the!winning!3!teams.!The!amount!of!effort!put!in!late!
in!the!SEPEP!will!hopefully!pay!off!finishing!the!season!off!with!a!bang.!I!have!
organised!3!trophies!for!winning!teams!complemented!by!a!small!golden!cup!
with!ribbons!on!them.!There!are!also!5!awards!for!various!excellences!and!two!
fair!play!awards;!2!for!the!fairest!team!and!one!for!the!fairest!individual.!I!am!
sure!everyone!will!appreciate!and!realise!the!effort!put!into!this!final!phase.!
Following!the!week!12!class,!I!was!stoked!ay!how!the!morning!ran.!Games!were!
smooth!and!we!thought!on!our!feet!when!troubles!arrived.!We!ended!up!playing!
three!catch!up!games,!two!semiTfinals!and!one!grand!final.!Test!Eagles!got!act!
together!and!won!the!semiTfinal!with!flying!colours.!Coming!into!the!grand!final!I!
was!shaking!like!a!Tamborine!with!nerves!(not!really,!the!team!was!cool,!calm!
and!collected),!and!come!out!the!other!side!being!crowned!champions.!Having!
the!surrounding!teams!on!the!sidelines!really!made!the!atmosphere!welcoming,!
with!multiple!referees,!lines!persons!and!ball!persons.!It!felt!like!a!true,!high!
class!grand!final!!
Festivities!were!successful!with!everyone!bringing!their!allocated!goods!and!
everyone!was!very!thankful!for!the!effort!the!sports!board!has!put!in!over!the!12!
weeks.!What!a!good!feeling!at!the!conclusion!of!the!SEPEP.!This!will!certainly!be!
used!in!my!teaching!in!future.!!

creating!a!session!plan!made!this!clear.!I!was!a!little!disappointed!with!the!
overall!mark!for!the!coaching,!but!the!comments!will!be!helpful!in!future!to!
correct!the!errors.!Towards!the!end!of!the!season!I!look!back!at!how!much!work!
went!into!the!last!two!weeks!of!the!unit,!but!in!the!end!it!was!all!worth!it.!Being!
part!of!the!sports!board!was!difficult!at!times!but!rewarding!overall.!What!I!
gained!most!from!this!unit!was!how!complex!the!SEPEP!is,!but!how!educational!
it!can!be!also,!especially!if!participants!put!in!what!they!want!to!get!out.!In!future!
I!would!probably!reduce!the!session!to!less!weeks!but!using!volleyball!provided!
a!clean!playing!field!for!most!participants!in!relation!to!skill!level.!Overall!the!12!

Week$1$$Introduction$to$SE$
First!day!of!semester!one,!bright!and!early!at!9am!started!off!with!a!bang.!During!
this!weeks!class,!it!was!interesting!beginning!my!learning!journey!of!sport!
education.!I!had!never!heard!of!the!term!sport!education!before,!and!I!was!
intrquied!to!grasp!an!understanding!of!how!it!works.!The!video!showed!of!how!
S.E.P.E.P!works!and!is!run!was!easy!to!understand!which!really!gave!me!greater!
insight!in!what!sport!education!is!all!about.!It!was!drilled!into!to!understand!the!
goals!of!Sport!Education;!a!student!being!competent,!literate!and!enthusiastic!
sports!person.!Including!the!difference!between!Sport!Education!and!Physical!
Education,!as!I!was!new!to!this!concept!and!how!the!season!played!out!
including!the!roles.!My!first!impression!of!the!class!was!exciting,!as!playing!sport!
while!learning!about!sport!education!was!my!kind!of!experience.!The!team!
teaching!also!worked!well!as!both!tutors!had!important!information!yet!different!
to!know.!Both!would!give!different!points,!which!allowed!for!greater!depth.!I!am!
interested!to!understand!this!concept!and!perhaps!implement!it!at!my!school.!I!
have!never!been!able!to!experience!it!but!at!first!glance!it!seems!like!an!awesome!
program!to!teach.!!!

Week$2$$Modifying$Games$and$Activities$
Week!two!lecture!was!all!about!modification.!Modification!is!all!about!changing!
the!structure!of!the!game!so!it!ensures!all!developmental!levels!are!catered!for.!
Strategies!implemented!to!modify!for!enjoyment!and!succession,!includes!
making!scoring!easier,!slowing!down!the!ball!movement,!increasing!opportunity!
for!participation,!changing!the!game!type!from!simple!to!complex!and!or!
changing!scoring!rules.!Throughout!this!lecture,!these!points!resonated!as!I!
understood!modification!before,!but!having!that!written!down!allowed!me!to!
fully!grasp!an!understanding!to!what!sport!education!was!about.!Throughout!
this!week,!I!was!a!little!slack!and!didnt!participate!in!the!discussion!on!Moodle.!
Within!the!tutorial!we!were!put!into!team,!I!didnt!know!anybody!in!my!team,!so!
being!introduced!to!different!people!was!exciting!but!intimidating.!Within!this!
lesson!I!began!to!learn!how!to!spike!a!ball.!Having!very!little!to!no!volleyball!
experience,!I!was!like!a!sponge!soaking!up!all!the!information!being!taught.!This!
was!the!first!experience!I!had!been!taught!proper!technique,!as!volleyball!I!can!
never!remember!being!taught!in!school.!

Week$3$$Goals$and$Roles$in$SE$
Week!three!lecture!was!on!the!topic!setting!goals!as!well!as!the!different!student!
roles.!Within!this!lecture,!I!took!out!of!the!student!roles.!This!widened!my!view!
of!how!students!can!participate!not!just!mealy!as!a!player,!but!as!various!roles!
such!as;!coach,!referee,!journalist,!coordinator/sports!board!etc.!This!week!as!if!
was!the!first!round!of!the!season,!we!experienced!first!hand!what!was!involved!
in!being!involved.!However,!the!teacher!doesnt!just!sit!back!and!watch,!they!are!
involved!100%!and!have!to!be!extremely!organised!for!it!to!run!smoothly.!In!the!
coaching!session!we!participated!in!our!first!session!run!by!Hayden.!Hayden!
introduced!us!to!the!basics!of!volleyball!as!well!as!rules.!This!was!fantastic!as!I!
was!introduced!to!rules!and!regulations!as!well!as!the!correct!technique!to!
perform!the!ways!to!hit!the!ball.!In!the!beginning!I!felt!it!was!hard!to!make!my!
serves!make!it!over!the!net!from!behind!the!serving!line.!Yet!with!repetition!we!
were!all!able!to!make!it!over!the!net!by!the!end!of!the!session,!and!perform!all!
the!types!of!hits!to!win!6!out!of!the!7!games!played.!However,!the!rules!were!only!
run!through!briefly!so!I!felt!I!had!to!ask!questions!throughout!the!session,!to!gain!
a!tight!grasp.!Nether!the!less!the!season!started!off!with!a!bang.!!

Week$5$Designing$Competition$Format$
Week!five!we!participated!in!the!second!round!of!competition.!As!a!team!we!
worked!well!together!this!week,!as!we!were!able!to!put!into!place!techniques!
learnt!from!both!Jimmys!coaching!session!as!well!as!Haydens.!We!were!able!to!
use!technique!such!as!team!plays!offensively!as!well!as!serving!plays.!Although!
our!skills!in!serving!were!still!raw!and!not!necessarily!accurate!the!team!plays!
allowed!us!to!enjoy!the!game!as!well!as!get!to!know!each!other!better.!Within!the!
coaching!session!Jimmy!I!really!enjoyed!the!warm!up!activity!!a!four!square!
scenario!where!you!play!against!the!other!three!but!perform!either!one!hitting!
technique!or!incorporate!all!three.!I!felt!the!whole!team!engaged!in!this!activity.!
Overall!this!week!I!felt!the!team!lacked!enthusiasm!and!it!showed!in!our!
performance!on!the!volleyball!court.!Although!we!won!some!games,!I!believe!we!
were!a!lot!stronger!the!previous!week,!or!perhaps!other!teams!were!getting!
stronger!quicker,!or!the!fact!that!we!had!a!week!off!in!between!coaching!sessions!
and!were!a!little!off.!Within!the!lecture!I!struggled!to!stay!engaged!although!
watched!later!in!the!week,!I!still!was!able!to!complete!it!and!learn!all!about!the!
types!of!competition!you!can!hold!when!planning!for!a!Sport!Education!season.!
All!the!competitions!have!their!positives!and!negatives,!but!I!believe!they!all!are!
important!to!understand,!as!it!needs!to!fit!your!sport!class!and!abilities!etc.!This!
week!I!didnt!participate!in!any!readings!and!was!lacking!motivation!to!stay!on!
top!of!this!weeks!workload,!however!was!enthusiastic!and!participated!in!the!
coaching!session.!!

Week$7$Gender$and$Ability$Issues$in$SE$

In!week!seven,!the!information!I!took!from!the!lectures!this!week!was!that!
everybody!in!Sport!Education!more!specifically!all!ability!and!or!genders!have!
the!right!to!play/participate,!as!everybody!has!equal!opportunity.!As!stated!in!
the!lecture,!if!everybody!has!the!right!to!play!then!participation!levels!would!
increase.!Which!makes!sense!when!you!keep!the!Sport!Education!goals!in!the!
forefront!of!your!mind!(competent,!literate!and!enthusiastic),!when!thinking!
about!increasing!participation,!as!then!more!players!will!become!competent,!
literate!and!enthusiastic!about!participating!in!sport.!This!week!we!participated!
in!our!third!coaching!session!run!by!Em.!Throughout!this!session!we!worked!on!
court!formation!and!tactics!that!could!be!used!when!playing!a!game.!I!found!this!
coaching!session!really!good!as!it!was!something!new!that!we!hadnt!worked!on.!
It!kept!us!all!engaged!as!we!werent!so!much!working!on!our!ball!handling!skill!
but!more!how!to!use!our!feet!and!work!on!the!court.!Furthermore!from!Ems!
coaching!session!the!team!came!up!with!several!team!plays.!Uno!where!the!one!
player!sets!it!up!which!skips!a!player!along!the!net!for!the!third!player!to!spike!it!
over.!Red!seven!was!when!a!player!sets!it!up!behind!them!for!a!player!to!run!
forward!towards!the!net!and!spike!it!over.!Within!this!coaching!session!we!also!
came!up!with!serving!tactics!to!signal!different!intensities!and!types!of!serves!
depending!on!the!player.!Within!the!competition!we!happened!to!win!three!
games!and!lose!three!games.!This!I!believe!built!our!team!spirit!up!from!last!
week.!Although!winning!isnt!the!point!of!this!season,!I!do!think!it!plays!a!
significant!part!in!the!team!spirit!and!confidence!of!the!team.!

Week$8$Assessment$in$SE$
Within!the!week!eight!lecture!the!information!was!all!about!assessment,!not!
necessarily!as!we!perceive!assessment,!but!where!students!are!given!a!
opportunity!to!demonstrate!their!knowledge,!skill,!understanding!and!
application!of!the!chosen!sport.!What!I!took!out!of!this!lesson!was!the!fact!that!
assessment!needs!to!be!authentic,!individualised!and!an!active!process.!As!a!
teacher,!the!understanding!of!content!can!be!assessed!in!many!formats,!such!as!
formative,!a!summary!of!season!which!needs!to!be!held!at!the!conclusion!of!the!
season,!or!authentic!which!has!four!step!process.!Assessment!doesnt!just!have!to!
be!formal!it!can!be!informal!with!other!modes.!Its!important!for!teachers!to!
understand!this!as!then!they!can!get!the!best!out!of!their!students.!Within!the!
coaching!session,!run!by!Ash!it!was!a!big!focus!on!the!defence!such!as!blocking!
and!the!three!touches!before!going!over!the!net.!I!liked!working!on!this,!as!it!
allowed!all!the!team!to!get!involved!in!the!game,!and!not!only!be!male!
dominated.!Ash!was!great!at!coaching,!as!he!was!clear!with!his!instructions!but!
also!didnt!put!down!the!group!on!what!they!should!be!doing,!was!more!where!
we!can!improve.!I!like!this!attitude.!The!threeTtouch!rule!worked!well!within!the!

Week$9$$Festivities$and$Limitations$in$SE$
In!week!nine!the!lecture!was!broken!into!two!parts!limitations!and!festivities.!
The!build!up!to!this!week,!I!found!it!hard!to!focus!and!find!the!motivation!to!
watch!both!these!lectures.!This!whole!experience!so!far!has!been!just!a!positive!
activity!to!undertake!however!I!was!surprised!to!find!that!Sport!Education!had!
many!limitations!around!it.!!One!suggests!that!it!only!caters!for!the!competitive!
students,!which!I!can!kind!of!agree!with!his!point,!however!participating!in!other!
activities!is!still!as!effective!as!competition!in!the!actual!sport.!They!may!not!gain!
the!same!outcomes!of!what!they!learn,!but!if!you!participated!by!refereeing!then!
you!learn!the!rules!of!the!sport!for!example.!As!an!advocate!for!sport,!if!a!future!
student!didnt!want!to!participate!in!the!actual!sport!but!was!happy!to!umpire,!I!
would!agree!to!the!changes.!Any!participation!is!good!participation.!Within!the!
festivities!lecture!it!summaries!the!positive!recognition!awards.!This!ties!in!with!
participation!point,!as!the!awards!given!in!Sport!Education!Festivities!isnt!the!
best!player!but!participation!awards.!This!allows!players!who!arent!the!best!or!
the!highly!talented!to!always!win!at!something.!This!allows!everybody!to!
potentially!win.!It!also!recognises!people!involved!not!only!in!the!play!but!
umpires,!scores,!coaches!etc.!Within!the!coaching!side,!both!Chloe!and!myself!
held!coaching!sessions.!Chloes!focus!was!on!the!offence!side!and!reiterating!the!
skills!needed.!In!the!build!up!to!this!session!both!Chloe!and!I!worked!
collaborative!to!ensure!we!didnt!cover!the!same!areas.!I!loved!Chloes!coaching!
session.!It!was!fun,!inviting!and!full!of!enthusiasm.!Chloes!coaching!session!was!
full!of!life!and!I!put!this!down!to!her!being!confident!with!what!she!was!
presenting!as!well!as!enthusiastic!to!teaching!us.!Although!we!worked!on!things!
that!we!had!previously!been!taught,!she!still!was!able!to!bring!in!new!concepts!
and!ideas.!I!wouldnt!have!anything!to!fault!within!this!session.!I!also!coached!
this!session!where!we!worked!on!defence.!I!think!the!session!went!well,!as!all!the!
players!were!engaged!and!eager!to!learn.!The!feedback!I!received!were!good!
feedback,!with!not!many!negative!pointers!to!improve.!Although!the!activities!
were!different!to!the!usual!ball!techniques!I!found!it!at!hard!times!to!keep!them!
concentrating!on!what!I!was!asking!of!them.!Hayden!occasionally!would!try!and!

This!week!was!crazy!busy!and!I!found!it!difficult!to!motivate!myself!to!stay!on!
top!of!the!workload.!The!lecture!summarised!the!seasons!outcomes!as!well!as!

try!to!prepare!us!for!the!exam.!However,!walking!through!the!gym!doors!for!the!
final!celebration,!it!was!a!sense!of!excitement!and!relief!being!surrounded!by!
balloons,!streamers!and!smiles.!Everyone!was!enthusiastic!about!celebrating!a!
fantastic!season!of!volleyball.!The!atmosphere!was!buzzing!and!everyone!was!
ready!to!participate!in!the!finals!series.!I!do!believe!that!the!excitement!of!the!
festivities!allowed!for!exciting!and!high!level!(high!level!for!the!seasons!
achievements)!of!volleyball.!Personally!we!lost!the!last!round!of!the!season,!
which!had!a!positive!effect!of!the!team!as!we!were!eager!to!pick!up!our!game!and!
play!a!team!oriented,!high!participation!level!of!all!players!game.!This!showed!in!
our!close!win!in!the!semi!finals.!Once!we!knew!we!were!in!the!grand!final!nerves!
set!in.!The!Test!Eagles!were!able!to!win!the!grand!final.!It!was!great!to!see!my!
team,!all!be!so!positive!and!enthusiastic!about!taking!every!hit!and!dive!to!win!
the!points.!It!reiterated!to!me!that!team!spirit!and!teamwork!is!really!important!
when!working!with!a!team.!Overall,!I!enjoyed!this!whole!experience!immensely.!
Having!know!prior!knowledge!to!what!Sport!Education!was!and!the!program!
SEPEP,!I!loved!the!hands!on!approach!to!figuring!out!what!its!all!about.!I!would!
love!to!implement!this!program!in!the!school!setting,!after!completing!university.!
In!the!future!I!think!students!would!benefit!having!a!regular!session!each!week,!
and!not!be!broken!up!with!other!commitments!(i.e.!university!placement).!So!if!I!
was!to!implement!this!program!I!would!ensure!it!was!consistent!for!the!students.!!

was!expected!of!us!from!the!term.!They!went!over!the!unit!guide,!assessments!
and!assignments.!I!felt!really!excited!by!the!Sport!Education!model!because!I!
want!to!introduce!it!into!Somers!Primary!school!(the!school!I!am!on!placement!
in.)!This!session!was!a!chance!for!us!to!ask!questions!about!Sport!Ed!and!what!it!
all!meant.!Feeling!very!excited!about!the!term!ahead!!
The!Sport!Education!(SE)!Model!developed!by!Seidentop!provides!an!
instructional!model!to!provide!authentic,!educationally!rich!sport!experiences!
for!participants.!Unlike!the!traditional!Physical!Education!(PE)!classes!an!SE!
program!gives!participants!a!chance!to!experience!a!full!competition!style!unit.!
Developing!these!programs,!whilst!initially!involves!a!lot!of!in!depth!planning!
and!organisation!from!the!teacher,!incorporate!students!of!all!needs!and!abilities!
in!a!sporting!setting!promoting!involvement!by!all!participants.!The!elements!
that!make!up!the!difference!between!a!SE!and!PE!program!include!a!longer!
season,!team!affiliation,!formal!competition,!culminating!events,!keeping!record!
and!festivity!make!for!a!more!student!centred!game!approach!to!including!
physical!activity!in!the!school!curriculum.!!

Week$2:$Modifying$Games$and$Activities$
Today!we!focused!on!modifying!games!in!the!gym.!We!were!broken!up!into!
teams!of!about!7!and!each!team!focused!on!a!category!of!sport!(Net,!contact,!
invasion!etc.)!We!were!given!net!so!we!chose!to!modify!volleyball.!We!started!off!
with!setting!it!up!using!a!bigger!lighter!ball!in!a!circle!or!in!pairs.!Then!
introduced!setting!over!the!net!in!pairs.!What!was!being!modified!was!the!size!of!
the!ball!(bigger!and!lighter!so!the!players!had!more!time!to!think!about!what!
they!were!going!to!do!and!get!into!a!better!body!position).!!We!changed!the!net!
height!so!that!it!would!be!easier!to!get!over!the!net.!
Modification!of!games!and!activities!is!a!central!feature!of!SE!ensuring!all!players!
have!an!equal!chance!at!success.!It!is!difficult!in!a!sense!to!cater!for!the!needs!of!
all!involved!in!the!session,!especially!if!you!are!focusing!on!a!sport!others!play!
recreationally!who!dont!view!the!modified!versions!as!being!real.!However!
modifying!games!and!activities!can!be!done!so!to!still!be!enjoyable!and!beneficial!
for!all.!To!modify!games!to!the!appropriate!level!strategies!include!making!
scoring!easier,!slowing!down!the!movement!of!the!objects,!increasing!the!
opportunity!to!participate,!sequencing!from!tactical!to!simple!and!changing!the!

SE!programs!allocates!students!specific!roles!and!responsibilities.!This!allows!all!
participants!to!experience!all!aspects!of!the!sport,!not!just!the!player.!These!roles!
are!dependent!on!class!size!and!based!on!learning!outcomes!of!the!season!with!
both!the!teachers!and!students!involved!in!the!roles!needed!and!the!allocation!of!
them.!The!roles!of!an!SE!season!at!each!session!include,!player,!referee!&!
scorekeeper.!!
With!SE!providing!the!students!with!the!opportunity!to!take!on!roles!such!as,!
coach,!scorer,!umpire!and!board!member!it!allows!for!those!not!necessarily!
thrilled!by!the!prospect!of!participating!in!the!sport!to!take!on!different!
responsibilities!throughout!the!season!allowing!them!to!acknowledge!that!there!
is!more!to!sport!than!just!playing!it.!This!ultimately!allows!all!students!to!gain!
understanding!and!appreciation!for!the!sport!as!a!whole!and!achieving!the!3!
goals!of!the!program!by!becoming!literate!competent!and!enthusiastic!sports!
people.!

Week$5:$Designing$Competition$Formats$
We!started!off!with!the!student!board!(Tim!and!Annabelle)!who!explained!what!
we!needed!to!do!including!fair!play!etc.!Jimmy!was!our!coach!for!the!session.!
Focusing!on!the!basic!skills!of!the!game,!particularly!serving.!All!activities!were!
enjoyable!and!appropriate,!however!some!were!let!down!as!he!didnt!follow!his!
lesson!plan.!Jimmy!had!a!good!knowledge!for!the!topic!which!came!across!during!
his!session.!!
We!started!off!playing!foursquare!but!using!volleyball!sets,!digs!and!spikes.!He!
kept!referring!to!what!he!had!seen!on!the!internet.!Emily!and!Hayden!were!
absent!so!there!was!just!four!of!us.!Then!we!went!on!to!doing!sets!on!the!walls!to!
ourselves,!trying!to!keep!it!up.!After!each!activity!we!debriefed!which!I!found!to!
be!really!good.!Jimmy!had!a!more!student!centred!approach!which!was!good!but!
I!felt!as!though!a!little!more!authoritive!structure!from!the!coach!would!have!
been!beneficial.!After!the!half!hour!session!of!coaching,!we!played!3!games.!It!
was!so!much!fun.!I!have!severely!bruised!knees!though!!My!first!game!for!the!
term.!Everyone!was!very!funny,!enthusiastic!and!good!sports.!!

Week$7:$Gender$and$Ability$Levels$in$SE$$
I!was!running!late,!so!missed!Ems!coaching!session!but!was!debriefed!with!the!
key!points!of!the!session.!We!had!learnt!tactics!and!court!formations!and!had!a!
few!secretive!plays!which!was!really!fun.!During!the!competition!phase!we!used!
these!plays!and!tactics,!which!also!amused!our!opponents.!The!effectiveness!of!
the!tactics!may!be!questionable,!but!kept!us!all!amused!!!

In!the!last!few!weeks!the!'fair!play'!point!system!was!introduced!to!try!and!
reduce!the!amount!of!male!dominance!and!negative!comments!occurring!
throughout!the!games.!Considering!this!in!regards!to!the!topic!of!gender!and!
ability!I!believe!it!was!a!really!effective!way!of!coping!with!the!issue.!!With!an!
equal!amount!of!males!and!females!in!our!team,!I!think!we!are!fairly!equal!in!
training!and!competition,!as!the!boys!seem!to!make!a!conscious!effort!to!share!
the!ball!around.!
The!power!and!ideology!of!men!and!women!seem!to!be!fairly!contained!in!our!
competition.!I!havent!heard!any!sexism!related!comments!or!generalisations!
which!is!surprising!to!me!as!it!is!so!ingrained!within!our!culture.!I!think!most!of!
the!students!are!aware!of!the!issue!and!are!making!a!conscious!effort!to!change!

season!is!structured!and!the!students!are!conducting!the!major!elements!
themselves!the!teacher!is!able!to!observe!and!give!effective!and!accurate!
feedback!and!assessment!of!their!students.!Not!only!are!the!children!benefiting!
from!understanding!all!the!elements!of!a!sport!but!it!allows!the!teacher!to!
carefully!monitor!and!asses!their!progress!and!in!turn!provide!support!and!
encouragement!for!further!development.!

Week$9:$Festivities$and$Limitations$in$SE$
Both!Jess!and!I!coached!this!week.!Focus!on!effort,!court!formations,!defensive!
drills!and!enthusiasm.!I!believe!our!sessions!were!really!inclusive!and!was!a!
good!conclusion!and!recap!of!the!season.!Excited!about!the!finals!coming!up,!
everyone!was!in!a!good!mood!and!enthusiastic!during!coaching!sessions!and!
competition.!Awards!were!being!prepared!and!organisation!of!food!and!drinks!
for!the!final!comp!was!being!allocated!to!teams.!Having!something!to!strive!for!
gives!teams!a!reason!to!connect!and!work!harder!in!order!to!achieve!working!as!
a!motivating!factor.!

Week$12:$Conclusion$&$Revision$
This!weeks!lecture!was!a!recap!of!the!season!and!also!preparation!and!revision!
for!exams.!The!finals!and!the!grand!final!took!place!and!everyone!was!happy!and!
enthusiastic.!The!festivity!was!highlighted!with!balloons,!colour,!barracking,!
awards!and!food!&!drinks.!!!

The!hype!around!the!grand!final!was!exciting!and!made!it!really!fun.!I!believe!
that!using!festivities!as!a!motivation!for!participation!and!enthusiasm!is!one!of!
the!best,!if!not!the!best,!ways!to!increase!motivation.!The!morning!ran!really!
well,!and!everybody!had!a!blast.!Overall,!the!season!was!great.!I!personally!took!a!
lot!of!interest!in!the!unit!as!I!am!attempting!to!implement!it!into!Somers!PS!at!the!
start!of!term!3.!I!will!make!a!few!adjustments!to!cater!for!age!&!abilities!but!also!
improvements!that!I!have!learnt!through!each!session.!!
