DEFORESTATION
Is the removal of a forest or stand of trees where the land is thereafter
converted to a non-forest use.
The act of cutting down or burning all the trees in an area.
Causes of Deforestation:
1. Agricultural Activities
Is one of the major factors affecting deforestation. Due to
overgrowing demand for food products, huge amount of tress are fell
down to grow crops and for cattle gazing.
2. Logging
Wood based industries like paper, match-sticks, furniture, and
supplies like firewoods and, charcoal.
3.
Urbanization
Overpopulation too
directly
4. Desertification of land
It occurs due to land abuse making it unfit for growth of trees.
5. Mining
Require considerable amount of forest land. Apart from this, roads and
highways have to be built to make way for trucks and other equipment.
6. Forest Fires
Another example would be forest blazes; hundreds of trees are lost
each year due to forest fires in various portions of the world.
Effects of
Deforestation:
1. Loss of species
Seventy percent of the worlds plants and animals live in forests and
are losing their habitats to deforestation.
2. Water cycle
Trees are important to the water cycle. They absorb rain fall and
produce water vapour that is released into the atmosphere. Trees also
lessen the pollution in water.
3. Soil erosion
Tree roots anchor the soil. Without trees, the soil is free to wash or
blow away, which can lead to vegetation growth problems.
4. Life quality
Due to deforestation this can decrease local water quality and
contribute to poor health in populations in the area.
Solution to Deforestation:
1. Plant a tree.
2. Go paperless.
3. Recycle and buy recycled products.
4. Look for Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification on wood and
wood products.
5. Eat vegetarian meals as often as possible.
Cooperation and immediate action are needed to decrease forest
product consumption, reduce forest destruction, and avoid denuded
forest areas throughout the world.
Ending deforestation is our best chance to conserve wildlife and defend
the rights of forest communities. On top of that, its one of the
quickest and most cost effective ways to curb global warming. Thats
why there were campaigning for a deforestation-free future.
