MATERIALS: Its Okay to Be Different By Todd Parr
Something soft that the children can pass around to one another (bean bag, stuffed toy, etc)
Pencil
Paper/Notecard/Post-it note
OBJECTIVES: The students will develop a better understanding of differences between themselves and
peers and will start to celebrate those differences.
ACTIVITY: (STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS TO FACILITATE- INCLUDING KEY QUESTIONS)
1. Ask the class what it means to be different. Talk about difference and that each person has something
special about themselves that makes their differences awesome.
2. We will read the book Its Okay to be Different by Todd Parr
3. We will discuss some of the differences the different characters had throughout the book and see if
they compare to any of the students in the classroom
4. We will talk about differences we have. This includes taking the bean bag (or similar item) and gently
tossing it around the room and allowing each child to say something that is different about
themselves.
5. For homework (or exit ticket) the student will list one thing they are good at in school and one thing
they are good at outside of school.

Can you think of differences that may not have been included in the book?
What differences do you have?
Do you share any of these differences with the individuals in the book?
EVALUATION: Time allowing, have the students write down their differences on a notecard(post-it) and
then post them up in the classroom. If time not allowing, send them home with homework.
