MATERIALS: Zero by Kathyn Otoshi
Buckets (one for each student)
Sheets of paper with different numbers written on them
Small squares of colored paper (or any paper)
Writing utensils
A big 0
OBJECTIVE: The student will demonstrate the ability to acknowledge differences between
themselves and peers and be able to complement their peers on their differences.
ACTIVITY: (STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS TO FACILITATE- INCLUDING KEY QUESTIONS)
1. Prepare a big 0 and discuss how you feel hollow and that you dont count.
2. Read Zero by Kathryn Otoshi
3. Give students pieces of paper with the different numbers written on them. Tell the students
to break up into groups of three to create different numbers. (Be sure that the groups
change members each time you ask them to create a new number) At this point talk about
how each person has different strengths and that each individual brings something different
to the table.
4. Students will be given a bucket and each student will be required to write one thing that the
other person does well and then put them in that individuals bucket
5. Students will be allowed time to look over a couple of their notes and then discuss if there
was a note they were surprised about or if there was a note they were especially happy to
see
6. Exit ticket (time allowing) or homework (time not allowing)
Key Questions:
Are there any talents you can think of that one person may have, that another person
may not have?
Is there any note in your bucket that you were surprised or delighted to receive?
How can you continue to celebrate individual talents?
EVALUATION: As an exit ticket (or homework), students will be required to discuss their
reactions to this activity. What did they like or not like? Was there anything surprising that
someone wrote on their notes? What did the learn from this activity?
