'TCS' Resume Information Extractor

(RINX) optimizes talent
management of a large workforce
by automating competency
extraction for its skills repository
For knowledge services companies such as TCS, people are
their most valuable asset. As such, it is imperative that these
organizations know the skills and competencies of all their
employees so that they can make more informed decisions in
planning, training and delivery management. However,
mining rsums of a large workforce is a tedious and time
consuming process.
To meet this challenge, we developed the Rsum
Information Extractor (RINX), a tool that uses text-mining,
automation, natural language processing, data-mining and
information retrieval technologies to deliver high-quality skillrelated information to update the organizations skill
repository in real-time. TCS now has an updated knowledge
base of employee competencies, allowing managers to
quickly and correctly identify candidates best suited for
specific positions, projects, or tasks.

Business Context

TCS' Solution

To stay ahead of the curve in todays uncertain yet

fiercely competitive economy, companies in the IT
services industry must optimize the value of their most
important asset human capital. To run the business
efficiently managers should have access to top quality
skills and competencies. Thus, an up-to-date
organizational skills inventory is mandatory for business
planning, acquisition, hiring, training and project
delivery management functions.

We developed the Rsum Information Extractor (RINX),

based on our information extraction framework INX.
RINX parsed the rsum of the employee for
information such as project experience, role, services
rendered, technology, project platform and role
performed in various projects, to derive a set of
competencies and proficiency levels defined by the
organizations Learning and Development (L&D) group.
The solution provided a batch job submission interface
and a simple mechanism to read and consume the
extracted competency and proficiency information of
the employees. It consisted of two major modules:

While employee competencies are available in their

rsums, culling out relevant information manually
from time to time is tedious and error-prone. This is
especially true for a large and growing company like
TCS, with several tens of thousands of employees. With
new employees recruited every day, the Competency
Management division of TCS HR function found
competency repository management to be a
challenging task. An incomplete picture would lead to
inefficient planning, acquisition and training. The
division needed an automated solution to deliver highquality skill-related information to develop and update
the organizations skill repository in real-time. The
solution had to work for all TCS employees across
domains, and for all levels of expertise and experience.

Extraction of project attributes like role, services

offered, duration of project/employment and
technology used from the rsum of the employee

Mapping technology to applicable skills and to

calculate proficiency levels based on the project
duration and role

We drew on the expertise of TCS System Research Lab

in the area of information retrieval and search. Various
text processing algorithms like sentence boundary
detection and correction, automated gazette creation
and search utilities, automated difference measuring
tools helped in the quick development of the RINX
solution. Other technologies used were the Document
Format Converter and the Hierarchical Gazette Support.

Client Experience

By using the information extraction framework INX as a

spring board for developing RINX, we reduced the time
for development while ensuring the accuracy of
extraction. In addition, the declarative process in INX for
specifying text preprocessing steps, templates for
specifying complex syntactic and semantic patterns
along with post-processing made the development of
RINX very easy.

Benefits
Our Rsum Information Extractor (RINX) made the
development of a skills and competencies repository
efficient and effective by bringing in an accurate and
efficient automated method to extract key elements of
information from a collection of rsums. Other benefits
included:
n

Fewer manual errors due to the use of automation

Continuous update facility, resulting in an up-todate repository

Scalability to handle larger volumes in the future

Ability to quickly identify candidates best suited for

specific positions, projects, or tasks

Ability to plan future requirements and business

development initiatives due to an updated
competencies repository in real time

Today we have successfully completed extraction of
