ZXJ10 Digital SPC Switching System

2003-12-12
ZXJ10 Digital SPC Switching System features modular architecture, hierarchical control in module,
and centralized management. It offers powerful call processing, high reliability, excellent
compatibility, and scalable networking.
System Architecture
ZXJ10 Digital SPC Switching System consists of peripheral switching modules (PSMs), switching
network modules (SNMs), message switching modules (MSMs), remote switching modules (RSMs),
remote line modules (RLMs), and operation and maintenance modules (OMM), as shown in Figure 1.
Except OMM, each module contains a pair of master and slave processors. Modular design allows
customers to use ZXJ10 to set up their own switching systems to meet specific demands. They can
also deploy modules in multiple locations.

A peripheral switching module offers PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) and ISDN
(Integrated Service Data Network) access and call processing in single module environment, single
module office connected to central module, a mobile switching system connected to central office,
and/or a Service Switching Point (SSP) connected to Service Control Point (SCP) in an intelligent
network. A remote switching module shares the same architecture as the peripheral switching module.
The unique difference between them is that a peripheral switching module uses 2,040 timeslots, but a
remote switching module uses fewer slots which can be increased by 32.
A message switching module exchanges messages between multiple modules. The peripheral
switching, remote switching and packet handling modules are connected to the switching network
module through fiber. The switching network module switches communication timeslots to the
message switching module whose master processor exchanges messages according to routing
information.
The message and peripheral switching modules shares the same control unit that consists of
a pair of master and slave processors and multiple communication units (COMMs) as shown in Figure
2. It can be expanded to offer larger capacity on demand.
The switching network module switches voice channels between multiple peripheral switching
modules, and connects peripheral switching and packet handling modules through channel B. It
forwards communication timeslots to the message switching module. It supports variable n x 64 kbps
switch fabric (n 32), H0 channel available for ISDN. It offers message channel to background.

The switching network module uses four 8-kbps switch fabrics, expandable to eight with 64 kbps of
switch fabric capacity, meeting various customers? requirements. The high wags from the peripheral
switching and packet handling modules are distributed to the switch fabrics, and the PCM (Pulse
Code Modulation) from the remote switching modules are distributed to a single T switch fabric
before to the above switch fabrics. All connections from the switch fabrics are controlled by a pair of
master processors and two communication boards through 256-kbps HDLC (High level Data Link
Control) links, and the two master processors are connected to operation and maintenance module
through Ethernet.

Operation and maintenance module features client/server architecture based on TCP/IP

protocol, running on Windows NT 4.0. It manages and maintains data required for the switch to run,
calculates traffic and charges, monitors system, and generates alarms. It supports remote operation
and maintenance, as shown in Figure 4.
The digital SPC switching system supports mobile communication by adding mobile peripheral
module (MPM, as mobile switching center) and visitor peripheral module (VPM, as visitor location
register). The mobile peripheral module offers voice trunks and signaling links to base station system,
voice trunks to PSTN, and links to PLMN (Public Land Mobile Network). It exchanges messages
with the visitor peripheral module, as shown in Figure 5. It offers 2,000 timeslots to the switching
network module, 2,000 to the base station system, and 4,000 to tandem trunks, supporting about
twenty thousand subscribers. The visitor peripheral module shares the similar architecture and
functionalities as the mobile peripheral module, except lack of ASIG (Analog Signaling) board. It is
unlike that the single T switch fabrics of the visitor peripheral module process interior control and
communication signaling, instead of voice switching. It manages roaming and local mobile data,
assigns and controls temporary resources such as TMSI (Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity) and
MSRN (Mobile Station Roaming Number), and communicates with other systems such as visitor
location register and home location register. It processes SS7 (Signaling System 7) signaling as well.
The packet handling module, based on the peripheral switching module and X.25 protocol,
supports Case A and Case B calls. For Case A call, packet over B channel is processed by COMM and
master processor of the packet handling module. For Case B call, packet over B channel is forwarded
by switch fabric to access unit on PSPDN (Packet-Switched Public Data Network) side.
The Internet access module consists of call signaling processing, modem pool and protocol processing
modules, offering Internet access and IP voice and fax. It allows subscribers to access remote
resources over phone lines, ISDN links or other private connections. It offers account management,
user authentication, and access control. It supports over twenty thousand subscribers.
The switching system allows customers to offer Internet access, shunting traffic load on data
networks. It enables organizations to set up their own intranets or VPNs (Virtual Private Networks),
offering Internet voice/fax service.

Trunk and Interconnection
ZXJ10 Digital SPC Switching System offers complete channel associated signaling. It comes with
digital trunk port and Multi-Frequency Control Receiver (MFC), and various analog trunk ports,
which makes it available in various environments. It supports tandem and transit between digital and
analog ports.
The switching system can be used in N-ISDN (Narrowband Integrated Service Data Network), SS7
networks, mobile communication networks, intelligent networks, and integrated access networks.
ISDN enables analog circuits to transfer data. The digital SPC switching system features three type of
ISDN ports: 2B + D, 30B + D, and PHI (Packet Handling Interface).
For a circuit switching network, the switching system offers unrestricted 64 and 2 x 64-kbps service,

Access Network
An access network consists of transmission entities, such as transmission links and facilities, between
the service node interface and the user network interface. ZXJ10 Digital SPC Switching System is
compatible with TQ 964 and 965 specifications defined by ITU (International Telecommunication
Union, www.itu.org). It offers V.5 interfaces, supporting multiple accesses such as PSTN, ISDN BRI
(basic rate interface, 2B + D), ISDN BRI (30B+D), various semi-permanent connections and analog
or digital access without out-of-band signaling.
The switching system shares powerful processing capability due to its distributed architecture. One
module offers twenty-four V.5 interfaces, one V.5 signaling card handles sixteen V.5 channels, one V.5
signaling card handles up to 600 active ISDN connections, and V5 and SS7 signaling cards can be
exchanged, one of which offers up to 160 V.5 channels.
The switching system comes with flexible and scalable interface configuration. It supports centralized
management through telecommunication management network (TMN).
It supports basic and supplementary service for PSTN, various services for ISDN, semi-permanent
and multislot connections, Centrex, billing pulse, reverse polarity, and calling line identification
presentation.

Powerful Intelligent Network

ZXJ10 Digital SPC Switching System offers an integrated intelligent network (IN) solution, including
service switching point (SSP), intelligent peripheral (IP), service control point (SCP), service
management point (SMP), and service creation environment point (SCEP).
The service switching points are the nodes between the intelligent network and existing PSTN, ISDN
and other networks, offering function set of intelligent network. It detects requests for intelligent
service, communicates with the service control point, responds to requests from the service control
point, and allows service processing logic in the service control point to process calls. Functionally, a
service switching point contains call control function (CCF), service switching function (SSF), and
specific resource function without a standalone intelligent peripheral.
The service switching point is compatible with TQ 1200 and SS7 specifications defined by ITU, and
interoperates with products from other vendors. Its distributed architecture facilitates upgrade. It
features traffic control and congestion avoidance mechanism, built-in and standalone intelligent
peripherals, DP drive for processing basic call, custom billing, and redundant design.
The switching system offers standard intelligent services such as account card call, free-phone, VPN,
universal personal telecommunication (UPT), mass call, televoting and wide area Centrex, and custom
intelligent services such as campus card service, green card service, number portability,
advertisement, and credit card call. It supports other value added voice and non-voice services as well,
such as query for database.
Networking Modes
The modular design allows you to set up a hierarchical-tree network with one or multiple modules.
Modules support cascades. You can set up central switching and central maintenance points at one or
two location as needed. And you can extract clock from any module, which makes networking
flexible and saves your investments.
The switching system supports four-level networking: local central office, C2, C3 and tandem offices;
role of signaling end point (SEP), Low-level Signaling Transfer Point (LSTP) and igh-level Signaling
Transfer Point (HSTP).
It supports networking through its built-in SDH (Synchronous digital Hierarchy) or FBI system,
covering a radius of fifty kilometers.
You can extend network connections to outskirts and remote villages through the remote switching
and remote line modules, which supports ISDN access, and SS7, intelligent and mobile connections.
