Vineyard
Celebrating 116 Years!
Historic Milestone
Beaulieu Vineyard, the home of the renowned visionary Georges de Latour,
celebrates a historic milestone this year, its 116th anniversary. Located in the
heart of the Napa Valley, off Highway 29, Beaulieu Vineyard welcomes visitors,
near and far, to one of the finest wineries in the world. In 1900, Georges de
Latour founded his winery with the vision of creating world-class Cabernet
Sauvignon from the exceptional terroir of Rutherford. Today, Georges de
Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has become the benchmark Napa
Valley Cabernet as well as one of the most collected American wines.

Cellars of Sonoma
The only Collective Tasting Room in Downtown Healdsburg
Healdsburg is a food and wine lovers dream, awash with top
restaurants, lodgings, unique shops and wine tasting rooms. There are
now 26 tasting rooms on and near Healdsburgs historic Plaza. Cellars
of Sonoma recently opened their new location smack-dab in the
middle of all the Healdsburg action and its definitely worth a stop.
For the most part, its filmed at Cellars of Sonoma, but has been
known to move to other remote locations like vineyards and the
vintner wine estates to film. Every December, Cellars of Sonoma hosts
a gala winemaker event, where winemakers from all of the featured
wineries pour their wines and rub elbows with the guests.
Perfect Pairs
Judds Hill Founders Art Cabernet with Strip Steak and Wild Mushrooms
The Napa Valley has been home to Judds
Hill Winery since the 1970s. This small
family owned winery continues to produce
world-class signature wines that are fruitdriven and concentrated while remaining
well balanced and food-friendly.
In keeping with their quality over
quantity philosophy, they produce less than
3,000 cases per year in their certified Napa
Valley Green Winery. The use of
environmentally efficient drainage, solar

Behind-the-scenes Cave Tours winds through 1,900 linear feet underground
Rombauer Vineyards has added a new feature to its options for visitors to the
winery a Cave Tour & Tasting. Guests will begin the new Cave Tour & Tasting
on the hilltop winerys porch, with its dramatic views of Napa Valley, before
strolling through scenic gardens and entering the caves through the picturesque,
barrel-shaped door. The tour continues through the 1,900 linear feet of caves,
where guests stroll through neatly stacked rows of small oak barrels while their
guide explains why the cave atmosphere is especially suited for the production of
artisanal, small-production wines.
Tours are offered by appointment at 11:00 a.m. daily for $60 per person. A
second daily tour, at 2 p.m., will be added in October. The Cave Tour & Tasting is
a walking tour lasting about 90 minutes and featuring six wines. Cave
temperature averages around 62 degrees F, with 80%-90% humidity; guests are
encouraged to bring sweaters or light jackets. Reservations can be made by
calling (707) 963-6606 or (800) 622-2206 or visiting the winerys website:
http://www.rombauer.com/visit/experiences/cave-tour-tasting/. Rombauer
Vineyards is located at 3522 Silverado Trail North in St. Helena.
For Napa Valley visitors seeking a comprehensive, behind-the-scenes look at
how fine wine is made, our new Cave Tour & Tasting fits the bill, explains Cheryl
Riedel, Director to Consumer Sales Manager, Guests will get an in-depth
education on what happens from the vineyard to the glass, while sampling some

Rombauer Vineyards
Rombauer Vineyards was founded in 1980 in St. Helena
by Koerner and Joan Rombauer, who built their three-level
winery into a hillside to take advantage of the natural
cooling influences. Caves were added to the property in the
1990s, and today, state-of-the-art equipment includes three
optical sorters, basket presses and peristaltic pumps, which
ensure gentle handling of the wine every step of the way.
The winery has one of the largest red wine barrel
fermentation programs in Napa Valley. Rombauer owns and
sustainably farms 350 acres of vineyards in St. Helena,
Carneros, Atlas Peak, Calistoga and the Sierra Foothills as
well as purchases grapes through long-term relationships
with growers in these appellations.
Koerner Rombauers great-aunt Irma Rombauer was the
author of the landmark cookbook The Joy of Cooking. The
winery maintains a close relationship with Irmas
descendants, the Becker family, who have continued The Joy
of Cooking legacy with regular updates. The Beckers provide
recipes and food pairings for Rombauer wines and visit the
winery each July as part of the annual Joy of Wine event
celebrating the release of the newest vintage of Rombauers
iconic Carneros Chardonnay.
The winerys current nationally distributed wines are
2015 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc, 2015 Carneros
Chardonnay, 2013 Carneros Merlot, 2014 Napa Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon, 2012 Diamond Selection Cabernet
Sauvignon and 2014 Rombauer Zinfandel. In addition,
Rombauer Vineyards produces several limited-production
and single-vineyard Chardonnays, Cabernets, Zinfandels
and dessert wines available only through the winery.

event will include approximately 100 wineries and will draw guests
from across the state and country. Tickets to the event are available
at www.bgccsc.org/pinot. The event will host a large silent auction
with wine-related lots and a Peoples Choice contest for the
participating wineries. Raffle tickets will also be sold to win either an

Girls Clubs of Central Sonoma County.
Funds raised from the event will be used to support summer
camps and afterschool programs throughout Sonoma County. CEO
Jennifer Weiss said A beautiful setting, amazing wines, and
incredibly generous people make day of fun and tremendous
support for our 6,000 Club members.
Major sponsors of the event include Multi-Color Corporation,
MA Silva USA, Pacific Gas & Electric, Enartis Vinquiry, Comcast,
The Press Democrat, and Summit State Bank.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Sonoma County serves nearly
6,000 youth every year at 32 locations throughout Cloverdale,

Rosa and Rohnert Park. The Clubs provide a safe place, caring adult
mentors, and high-impact youth development programs on a daily
basis during critical non-school hours. The organization seeks to
enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach
their potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

Ledson Winery, a family with over 150 years of tried and true
winemaking philosophy, has created a superior wine portfolio
of highly coveted, small-lot wines that showcases the absolute
best that wine country has to offer.
Daily tastings are offered at three quaint tasting bars, or call ahead
and book a private tasting in one of our personal tasting suites.

The tasting room was once Jack London Bookstore, and before
that a tractor shed. The winery moved there in 2006 from its
operation across the street, a space it shared with the old Olive and
Vine restaurant.
Its quaint and quiet, the Mitchells contend. People like the
coziness, said Diane. We dont push the wine, wine should sell itself.
For a $15 tasting fee, visitors can choose five wines from the menu.
Some of the menus highlights, and the wines that gain a following,
include the Viognier, the Pinot Noir and the Tempranillo, which pairs
very well with food.
Many visitors go down the menu and like most of what they taste,
so opt to join their wine club. And there they stay. Our wine club
members are faithful, said Diane.
The Rooster Club, as it is called, offers members three bottles every
three months at a 20-percent discount. Members also receive special
offers and invitations to events, a newsletter and recipes.
So whether youre just passing through Sonoma Valley or a local
looking for a great place to taste, a stop at Eric Ross promises an
unforgettable wine country experience.

pairing, and wine tasting experiences for both the wine novice and
expert.
The Restaurant at Wente Vineyards uses locally grown organic
ingredients and features ingredient-driven California wine country
cuisine. While the menu holds its foundation in American dishes, it is
influenced by French and Italian provincial cuisine. The seasonal menu
changes daily, utilizing produce from The Restaurants organic garden.
Wente Vineyards is also the only winery in Livermore Valley to
offer a championship 18-hole public golf course.
Family, food, entertainment, and of course, the wines beckon
visitors to experience the legacy that is Wente Vineyards.
VASCO ROAD
Livermore Valley, with its rich heritage and variety of wine tasting
experiences, should be a top destination that people consider when
planning their next wine country getaway. As the countrys oldest,
continuously operated, family-owned winery and Californias First
Family of Chardonnay, Wente Vineyards would be a good place to
start the journey. The winery, led by fourth and fifth generation family
members, has clearly proven their leadership both in winegrowing
and in being one of Californias premier wine country destinations.

If you plan to take wine home with you, either in the car or on
a plane, buy a cardboard box with Styrofoam wine inserts. Fill it
during the day and this keeps wine from rolling around in the
trunk.
Check out the smaller wineries. It is a revelation.
Take notes on the wines you most enjoyed.
Take advantage of tours when the winery offers them, but keep
in mind that they take anywhere from 20 minutes to well over an
hour, so one a day is plenty.
Buy wines that you can only find at the winery. These often include smaller (375 ml) bottles of limited production ports or
dessert wines. Dont buy a wine you can get at a supermarket back
home.
Dont give too much thought to ratings and vintages. Its like
art: if you like it, its a good wine. It is as simple as that.
Remember that you dont have to do the driving. It takes no
more than a phone call to rent anything from a Town Car or restored Packard convertible to stretch limos and a 20-passenger bus.
All have drivers that will stow your wine for you and the local companies know the area. Tell the transportation company what you
have in mind and listen to their advice. They know the territory
and the people and personalities.
Know your limits. If you get close to it let others taste and you
can listen. It beats ending the day in a blur, and if need be calling
a taxi is cheaper than the alternative.
And if at a seated tasting, dont be afraid to leave a gratuity. Its
more than worth the five or ten dollars to get wisdom and wine
and a great time.
By Charles Neave
Do the Math
One of the questions most asked when it comes to wine is how much of this does it take to make that, and so on. We wont pretend that its simple, but here are some industry statistics that will give a pretty good
answer to that query. As with anything agricultural, of course, they are all based on countless variables when it comes to acre yields, but this is a good starting point. The rest of the information varies little if at all.
