Going solo
A
Whats the most amazing thing youve ever done?
Teenager Mike Perham has just returned from the
trip of a lifetime. The seventeen-year-old has
become the youngest person to sail solo around the
world. This record-breaking feat took nine months.
During that time, he had to cope with huge waves,
strong winds, and problems with his boat.
B
While many teenagers have celebrated their
birthdays on holiday, its a safe bet that most have
never celebrated one alone in the South Pacific
Ocean. Mike also had far less sleep than the
average teenager. He could only sleep for 20
minutes at a time. While he was sleeping, an
automatic pilot took over the controls.
C
Mike has displayed courage, determination and
mental and physical stamina that would be
impressive even in an older, more experienced
sailor. Its unfortunate that he wasnt able to
complete the trip non-stop as planned. Perhaps that
will be his next challenge.
