Naming the unknown complete

By Jessica Howard
Its been ten years since the Hopetoun
Cemetery Preservation Group began
pursuing the names of those buried in the
historical graveyard.
Now, a comprehensive list of more than 250
people is complete and ready for dedication.

Hopetoun Cemetery Preservation Groups
acting president, Margaret Love said the
creation of the list had been one of the
groups main goals since its establishment in
around 1999.
Volunteers at Births, Deaths and
Marriages Victoria have been going through

death records and attaching people to some

of the smaller, closed historic cemeteries
throughout Victoria. As a result, and
along with our own research through
newspapers and obituaries, we have been
able to put together what we believe to be a
comprehensive list, she said.
We have 255 people that we are confident
are actually buried there and another two
people who are mentioned on tombstones
but died elsewhere who have also been
included.
The Hopetoun Cemetery, located four
kilometres east of Bacchus Marsh, was
established in 1850 and is of historical,

archaeological and scientific significance to

the state of Victoria.
Ms Love said the cemetery had no known
records or trustees.
We have been working to get these names
together for more than ten years, so we are
really delighted to finally have a listing and
delighted to see those buried here receive the
respect and dignity they deserve.
We have been fundraising over the years
and we will have two memorial stones
erected, which will list the 257 names and
be dedicated and blessed by Father Brian
Glasheen.

The dedication ceremony will take place on

Saturday, October 22 at 2:30pm.
We have invited six descendants of persons
buried in the cemetery, who will share the
reading of the names, Ms Love said.
The ceremony is open to anyone; however,
we are particularly interested in having
as many descenders attend as possible. We
believe there are 5th and 6th generations still
living in the town.
The Hopetoun Cemetery is located on
Bacchus Marsh Road (Anthonys Cutting),
opposite Flanagans Drive. For more

Local green thumbs will
have the opportunity to
show off their talents at this
years Horticulture Show.
Held annually in Bacchus
Marsh, the popular event is
expected to see a number of
local entries, with sections
including roses, cut flowers,
floral art, Australian natives,
junior, pot plants and garden produces.
Each section will comprise
of a number of classes ranging from geraniums and
decorative shrubs to cacti,
bonsai and root vegetables.
Rosettes (pictured) will be
provided for the first, second
and third best entry, with
a sash awarded to the best
overall exhibit.
Organising
Committee
Chair, Jocelyn Taylor said
the show was a great way for
locals to be recognised for
their gardening efforts.
Each year we have built
up the show to be better
and better, and after such
a fantastic season with all
this rain, I am sure we will
see some splendid roses and
plants from everyones great
gardens, she said.
I really encourage people
to enter into the many sections that are available.
In its third year, the Bacchus
Marsh Horticulture Show
was founded by local resident Joce Williams in order
to raise money for the promotion of an Aquatic Centre
in Bacchus Marsh.
Among other attractions
will be a display by local
sugar artist Nanennt Van Orsouw, Delux Garden pamper
products, locally grown and
Melton Botanic native plant

Underbank underway

By Jessica Howard
As the development of the
new Underbank accelerates,
Katalands Allan Carlsson
says he is passionate about
preserving the history of the
area.
Underbank has long been
remembered as the successful stud farm that was once
home to the champion racehorse Phar Lap.
Former stables, fences and
trees are still part of the
sites rich history and, according to Development
Manager Allan Carlsson,
will be respectfully incorporated into the communitys
masterplan.
Mr Carlsson said one of
the old stable complexes,
believed to be more than
80-years-old, could one day
be restored and used as a

public facility for farmers

markets and art shows.
An old river-red-gum tree,
which stands tall and overlooks the old and battered
stud farm, will be trimmed
back and preserved.
Ive been told that the tree
is about 200 years old, so we
will need an arborist to come
in and tell us how to safely
preserve it, Mr Carlsson
said.
This is an historic tree and
is a very important part of
the area.
Mr Carlsson said Kataland,
the company behind the
Underbank
development,
plan to support the growth
of Bacchus Marsh by accommodating a population of
around 4,000 people with
1,500 blocks.
The masterplan for Underbank is much more than just

WELLBEING &

readers, alternative health and wellbeing
practitioners and products, massage, books,
nutrition, aura readings, crystals, motivational

a collection of new homes.

This will be a complete community where public spaces
and amenities have been created within a village setting
to enrich the lives of everyone who will live here, he
said.
The masterplan includes
a full size AFL oval, netball
courts, walking trails and
public spaces. You dont
have to live here to benefit
from this project.
Kataland Director Jason
Yeap said the development
would break away from
traditional master-planned
communities as a result of
planning and design that
celebrated and respected
the landscape.
Most
master-planned
communities look the same
theyre flat and featureless.
When I first saw the Under-

bank site, I was struck by

the rich landscape. Theres a
natural bowl formation with
a valley floor surrounded by
hills, established trees, native shrubs and landscaped
waterways.
With Underbank, it was
integral to preserve the sites
existing natural assets, and
instead of cutting into the
land, we created new home
designs that work with the
slopping land, not against
it. We are excited to bring a
new era of master planned
communities which respects the land and supports
growth for current and future generations.
Construction on the Underbank sites has already
commenced, and stage one
has been released, with land
starting at $129,000 for a
420sqm block.

Building revamp

By Kate Taylor
The Ballan Golf Club is set
to take over the BBQ building on-site.
The October 5 council meeting heard that the Club
wants to take control of the
building, which has been vacant for many years, and use
it to charge and store electric
golf carts.
The building, located near
the clubhouse on the golf
course land, and near Blow
Court, is currently councils

Preschool

responsibility.
A report tabled at the meeting recommended transferring the building to the golf
clubs control, noted that the
building is in a state of disrepair, and is often subject to
graffiti and vandalism...
Additionally, the Council
should note that this building has been the target of
graffiti and vandalism for
some years now. It is hoped
that by transferring the
building to the golf club and
then having the building

renovated and made more

secure by the installation of
lighting and CCTV cameras
that future damage to the
building will not occur, the
report reads.
The building does, however, sit partially on the Crown
Reserve leased to the club by
the (Department of Environment, Land Water and Planning DELWP.
It is proposed that a portion of the road reserve for
Blow Court be discontinued
so that the building all falls

within land controlled by

the Crown adding to the
golf course land immediately to the north of Blow
Court...
The golf clubs proposal
has been discussed with
DELWP and they have
raised no concerns in principle with this course of
action.
Council will now undertake
the administration required
to take the steps to have the
land transferred to the golf
clubs control.

From wild to wonderful

By Jessica Howard
Three Moorabool Shire
equine trainers have been
handed the difficult task of
turning a horse from wild to
friendly.
Mt Wallace resident, Blair
Ireland; Sally Adsett-Brown
of Ballan; and Gordons
Christopher
Giles
will
compete in the Australian
Brumby
Challenge
at
Equitana, which partners
totally wild Brumbies with
professional and amateur
horse trainers.
EQUITANA
is
the
ultimate equine showcase
in Australasia and will be
held in Melbourne at the
Showgrounds this year.
The Brumbies are humanely
caught as part of an ongoing
National Park Management
program and saddle trained
over a 150-day period in the
lead up to the competition.
The three trainers will then
present their partnership to
the public over four days at
Equitana.
Blair, who started his
horsemanship
journey
working on cattle stations in
south-west Queensland, was
paired with his ten-year-old
horse Kai around 80 days
ago.
Hes definitely trainable,
the hardest thing at the
moment is his age as he is
set in his ways, but he is the

kindest horse Ive ever had,

he said.
When I picked him up
I went up to the South
Australian bush for about
three months, he was pretty

nervous and very wary of

people. Our trip was about
building up his confidence
by getting control of his feet
and his mind; its really just
about building trust.

Blair, who has since

returned home to his Mt
Wallace
property
with
Kai, said after tackling the
horses confidence in the
bush, it was time to move on
to man-made areas.
Ill be taking to him to the
Geelong Show to prepare
him for Equitana and over
the next few weeks we will
work on him being around
people.
At the end of the Brumby
challenge, trainers will have
the opportunity to purchase
their partner, or offer the
horse for sale in a unique
pre-approved auction.
Victorian
Brumby
Association
president,
Colleen OBrien said the
process of taking the animals
from wild to wonderful
was heartening, exciting and
emotional.
Trainers regularly keep
fans up to date with blogs
and social media, so
everyone has a chance to
learn about each animals
personality, quirks and
habits through the voice of
their trainer, she said.
The finals of the challenge
will be held at EQUITANA
in
Melbourne
from
November 17-20 at the
Melbourne Showgrounds.
Trainer profiles and their
journeys with the horses
can be found at www.

Change your diary entry

By Kate Taylor
The date of the November
Ordinary Meeting of Moorabool Shire Council has been
changed.
Originally to be held on
Wednesday 2 November, it
will now be held on Wednesday 16 November to accommodate the council elections
being held in October. The
Special Meeting of Council,

Statutory and Annual Appointments, has also been

changed from October 26
to November 7.
Councillors approved the
changes of date at the October 5 council meeting. In order to allow the newly elected Council sufficient time
to hold a Special Meeting of
Council to elect a new Mayor, consider other statutory
and annual appointments

and undertake a number of

induction sessions, changes
to the Statutory and Annual
Appointments meeting date
and the Ordinary Meeting
date are required, read the
motion. Postal votes for the
Saturday 22 October election
have been extended to the
cut-off at 12 noon on Friday
28 October. The election results will be released in the
week commencing Monday
31 October.

Life after
retirement

By Jessica Howard
The Bacchus Marsh U3A
has shone a light on senior
services in the area.
The local community group
hosted its second annual
Seniors Expo at the Bacchus
Marsh Public Hall on Friday
(October 7).
The expo, which ran in conjunction with Seniors Week,
provided seniors with a
range of information about
age-friendly activities whilst
giving community groups
and businesses the opportunity to exhibit their product
or services.
A total of 17 community
groups and 11 U3A units
opened stalls on the day.
Bacchus Marsh U3A secretary, Helen Brown said the
purpose of the event was

to provide local senior residents with information on

what is available to them.
I know that when I retired I still wanted to do
something with myself but I
didnt know where to go or
what to look for, she said.
We held our first expo last
year but on a much smaller
scale; this year it has really
blown up and its just fantastic to see so many people
involved.
Bacchus Marsh U3A president, Adrian Rowell said the
event had grown from seven
community groups to 17 in
just one year.
Its been a lot of hard work,
but when you come to the
expo and see people interacting and swapping information its all worthwhile,
he said.

Its really interesting to see

whats on offer and to show
the community not only the
highlights of U3A, but also
other groups within the
area.

The local U3A was started

in 2008 and is a learning
cooperative that enables
members to join educational,
creative and leisure activities through sharing their
knowledge and experience.
There are 14 current activities offered by U3A, including book club, poetry and
creative writing, games,
quilt making and tai chi.
For more information, or to

WHATS ON

Dear Editor,
Once again the local council
elections are upon us and
although potential councillors all mean well and have
great vision, how will they
go about, as they never tell
us, how they will actually go
about achieving their potential wish lists?
I also would love better
transport, more for the youth
to do, safer roads, increase
in police numbers etc etc,
but the problem is, the bureaucratic red tape, funding,
no responses, and the fact
that minimal requirement
has already been met, so no
change is needed -thats the
best one.
Good luck in your endeav-

ours and remember what

youpromised. I for one will
sit back and atthe end of your
term; lets see what you have
achieved from your list of
potentials. Be careful of the
many brick walls you may
encounter, but thats what
happens when JoeBlow citizen needs help or assistance
from politicians/councillors
at any level of government
in Australia.
PS. I thought the elections
were secret - need convincing as the envelope I need to
return has all my details on
it and I need to sign it. Just
not buying it - I would rather
pay a fine.

Dear Editor,
Thank-you for your disturbing report about ex-councillor Patrick Griffin
being named and exposed
in an independent investigation of our Council.
This investigation revealed
repeated and unauthorised
access of a secure
Council website.
Due to the elapse of statutory time limits, further
warranted action
could not be pursued.
I am dismayed by this in-

Why have we also received

no answers regarding:
- Where are these confidential, accessed files now?

- Which files were accessed?

- What was the motivation

- Did Mr Griffin have assistance in accessing these

It seems to me that many
questions remain unanswered in this disturbing
betrayal of ratepayer trust.

Pedestrian safety
not in Place

VOTE 1

By Jessica Howard
A Bacchus Marsh resident
says he fears someone will
be hurt if appropriate measures arent taken to ensure
the safety of his street.
Mark Frackowski lives in
one of the 16 dwellings located in Farrow Place.
He says residents had recently been advised that a
footpath would not be laid
on either side of the road.
The Place, which runs off
Mimulus Street near Stonehill Drive, will also be considered a through-road
upon the completion of the
extension of Halletts Way
and OLeary Way.
Mr Frackowski said the lack
of planning raised significant Occupational Health
and Safety issues.
Inclement weather and uneven surfaces on the existing
nature strips do not allow
for a safe walking path, but
it does provide the potential
for a slip, trip or fall, he said.
With the amount of construction workers, vehicles,
new residents and their vehicles, it is unsafe to walk on
the through-road, which is
what we are being asked to
do, as currently there is no
footpath on either side.
I am retired and we have
a range of middle age to retirees in our street where
are we meant to walk? The
nature strips are full of mud
during winter and rough,
bumpy and uneven during fine weather. This, as a
result, is a hazard with an
incident potentially on the
radar.
Mr Frackowski said he
contacted VicRoads and
the Transport Accident

ALLAN COMRIE

Candidate for East Moorabool

Commission, and had met

with Civil Engineer Chris
Coughlan, Moorabool Shire
Councils OH&S representative and Moorabool Shire
Mayor Allan Comrie at the
area in question, however he
continued to hit a dead end.
I feel like I am banging my
head against a brick wall.
I either receive absolutely
no response at all or what I
receive is unsatisfactory, he
said.
With due respect, Allan
was sympathetic; he agreed
that Farrow Place should be
a no-through road and suggested putting bollards at
the end of the road. However, in the response I received from Councils CEO
Rob Croxford, there was no
sympathy whatsoever.
Mr Croxford said Farrow Place was designed as
a through-road, with the
northern end directly adjoining OLeary Way.

The design of the road is

intended to be a low traffic
volume access lane due to
being a medium density site
and as such, the construction
of footpaths was not undertaken during development
and is not being considered
at this time, he said.
Once the construction of
OLeary Way is complete,
Council will undertake traffic counts and utilise the
data to inform a decision on
the merit of installing traffic
calming devices. It would
be premature to implement
such measures prior to this
data being available.
In addition to this, indirect traffic calming measures, such as narrow lane
width and on street parking,
may lessen the use of the
road once the area is fully
developed.
However, Mr Frackowski
said parking vehicles on
the road to slow traffic was

disgraceful.
Mr Croxfords words are
simply a text book response.
Its not wide enough to park
cars side by side and its dangerous to park them on the
so-called nature strip.
The simple fix would be to
make the road, which comes
from Farrow Place heading
to Halletts Way, a left-hand
turn only. If no one is turning right, it will minimise
the traffic flow and enable
road users to use the round
about which is literally located 20-metres up the road.
We need to implement
safety measures now, because I know what will happen and that is six months
down the track Council
will say they dont have the
funds to change it. But to put
a cost on someones life is
ridiculous.

By Jessica Howard
A surge in drug and assault
offences has fuelled a 15 per
cent rise in crime throughout the region.
The latest figures from Victorias Crime Statistics Agency show that assault offences
in Moorabool reached 213
during the past year to June
30, an increase of 45.9 per
cent from the previous year.
Sexual offences increased
from 55 offences to 101,
whilst drug dealing and
trafficking increased by
more than 100 percent.
The increased crime rate,
which saw the number of
offences throughout Victoria reach over 500,000, has
posed an ongoing challenge
for Premier Daniel Andrews.
These are a very challenging set of statistics, he said.
They are right across the
community and they have a

profound effect on people in

every part of our state.
Mr Andrews said the state
government had since announced its decision to bring
to capacity trainees at the
Victoria Police Academy in
order to bring more police
recruitment forward and
offer additional frontline
police.
Following discussions with
Police Chief Commissioner
Graham Ashton, the government has provided $26.2
million to expedite the 406
new police announced in the
Victorian Budget.
Member for Melton, Don
Nardella said more police on
the beat would assist to alleviate growing concerns of
residents in the Moorabool
area.
The government continues
to give Victoria Police the resources and powers it needs
to fight crime funding an

additional 406 police, new

technology and specialist
equipment, and introducing
new laws to target offenders
who commit home invasions
and carjackings, he said.
The Police Custody Officer program roll-out has
seen 227 custody officers deployed to 22 stations. Across
Victoria, they have worked
more than 11,000 shifts to
free up police time.
Mr Nardella said Victoria
Police would continue to
work on a new deployment
model for police, which will
examine an areas crime
trends and socio-economic
factors to best inform resourcing decisions.
The deployment model is
yet to be finalised but the deployment of the additional
police officers will cover
growth corridors and other
areas of high need.

The Moor

Man steals from

community

Dire

By Jessica Howard
An 18-year-old man involved in a string of breakins and robberies has been
offered one more chance to
turn his life around.
Joshua Fuller appeared in
the Ballarat Magistrates
Court on Thursday September 29.
Police alleged that over
an eight-day period Fuller
broke into a number of local
businesses and community
clubs, included the Springbank, Gordon and Ballan
Recreation Reserve clubrooms and the Ballan Hospital Opportunity Shop.
The string of break-ins commenced on September 18 of
this year when Fuller gained
entry into the Springbank
clubrooms through an ajar
window, the court heard.
Accompanied by three unknown people, Fuller fled
the premises empty handed
after the clubs security
alarm system was set off.
On the same evening, Fuller
attended the Gordon clubrooms, where he forced open
a side door to gain entry. The
man and the three unknown
co-accused allegedly entered the club bar and stole
12 slabs of beer and a black
colour television, the court
heard.
Two days later it is alleged
Fuller gained entry into the
Ballan Hospital Opportunity Shop (Opportunity on
Inglis) by forcing open the
rear door. A computer hard
drive, $60 worth of donations and an assortment of
watches and jewellery were
stolen from the premises.
On September 26, Fuller
appeared on CCTV cameras
outside the Ballan Recreation Reserve Tennis Clu-

A CCTV image that identified Josh Fuller (rear) with an unknown accomplice and the Silver
Subaru, attempting to break into the Ballan Recreation clubrooms. Photo - supplied
brooms. A silver Subaru
Sedan, driven by Fuller, was
also captured on the footage. Fuller notices the CCTV
camera pointing at him and
flees the premises with an
unknown accomplice.
Five minutes later he is alleged to have returned with
a black jumper over his face.
Police alleged Fuller gained
entry through a window
and broke the door handle
of the fridge, in an attempt
to steal more alcohol, before
accidentally setting off the
alarm system and fleeing the
premises again.
On September 28, police
observed Fuller working on
a car in OHagen Place in
Bacchus Marsh. Upon closer
inspection, the vehicle was
identified as the one seen at
the Ballan Football Club two
days prior. The vehicle was
subsequently searched and
nine Carlton Draught beer
cans were found in the boot,
which Fuller admitted were
those taken from the Spring-

bank Football Club.

The accused, who was already on two sets of bail
following a number of driving offences including theft
of registration plates, driving an unregistered vehicle
and driving with a learners
permit without supervision,
was arrested and remanded
in custody.
Appearing before the court
on Thursday, Fuller was supported by family members.
His lawyer, Mr McKenzie,
said the 18-year-olds life had
taken a turn for the worse
after a recent introduction
to bad company and the
drug ice.
My clients life has really
unravelled in recent times.
It spiralled downwards after
he began dabbling recreationally in the drug ice and
therefore being in bad company, however when I saw
him yesterday in the cells
I could tell that he was extremely distressed, Mr McKenzie said. This has been a

big wake-up call and a very

sobering experience.
However, Magistrate Robertson said ones actions
should not depend on the
people they spend time with.
I do not swallow the line
that this has to do with the
people you are hanging out
with. You are an adult and
you are responsible for your
own actions, she said.
You have potential to be
better than this and you
need to wake up to yourself,
because if you keep coming
back you will go to prison.
I will give you one more
opportunity but you have to
treat this very seriously. Its
time to do something and its
time to grow up.
Fuller received a 12-month
Community
Corrections
Order, including 120-hours
of community work and ongoing drug assessment and
treatment.
He was also ordered to pay
$1,600 in compensation.

A local music lover has

been reunited with his
extensive vinyl collection
three months after it was
snatched from a property
near Ingliston.
The owner, who The

the collection was valued at
around $8,000.
I felt empty, its hard to

of my collection was taken,

the collection was very

the
collection was recognised

back. We did some checks
and the owner confirmed

The music lover said he was

When I found out, I just

still some left.
I would like to thank the

The Greendale Country Pub,
is exactly that, Country, and
the original old Weatherboard
Local Pub. Its 150 years old
and still going strong. Locals
come from far and wide, with
patrons who pass by on the Trentham Tourist Route. Friendly, whilst warm
in Winter or Cool in the Large outdoor Beer Garden in the warmer months
under the elm trees.
Our proudest achievement was refurbishing the whole pub from inside to
out and bringing it back to its original style but adding a touch of the new.
Incorporating Rustic Country feel that you get from home style cooking. A
big feed and at a small cost. The Larder Beer Garden and Bar incorporates
an Outdoor Stage with a Danceoor.
We like and always try to employ locally so we help out the locals whilst
they are helping to support us.
We are always looking at extending the menu and changing meals so we
get good regulars returning to enjoy a different avour.
Pop in and join in the happy old Country Style pub atmosphere next time
you are passing. Or leisurely take a weekend drive with friends and family
and drop in for an enjoyable lunch at the Greendale Country Pub, known

TOM

Environmental Opinion

with Tom Kingston

Permaculture became a
life long passion
Two older men died recently within a day of each other.
One died on September 24
and the other the next day.
One was born in 1928 in Tasmania, the other in 1929 in
the US. One played golf for
a living and the other didnt.
Ones death was recorded
in all news services that I
saw and the others death
was mentioned in some Tasmanian papers. One mans
name was familiar to a wide
audience. It was the golfer
Arnold Palmer. The others
mans name; well it was Bill
Mollison. It is a sign of the
disconnect in our western
industrial world that our
national news services cover
in some detail the passing
of a man who played golf
well and do not mention the
other, who changed so many
peoples lives in such a significant way, much at all.

I devote this weeks article

to the other man, to Bill Mollison. This is not an attempt
to summarise Bill Mollison,
heaven forbid. It is simply a
brief tribute to a man who
thought in brilliantly environmentally creative ways
about our relationship to
all around us. Bill Mollison
was born in 1928 in Stanley,
Tasmania and died at Sisters
Beach, just up from where
we live here in Burnie. For
the following details I will
borrow from two people
who knew Bill Mollison
well; leading British permaculture teacher, Graham Bell
and David Holmgren, who
lives in Hepburn Springs.
Graham Bell writes, Bill
Mollison has left a worldwide movement of remarkable resilience. He has left
much useful information
and not a few words of guid-

ance and encouragement.

His time in the Tasmanian
rainforests gave him the
founding structure for what
became his lifes passion
Permaculture. This was
the idea that we could consciously design sustainable
systems that enabled human
beings to live within their
means and for all wild life to
flourish with us.
In 1974, with David Holmgren, Bill developed the
beginning of the permaculture concept, leading to the
publication of Permaculture
One. He became fixated on
proving and promulgating
what he saw as a world renewing concept.
In 1981, Bill Mollison received the Right Livelihood
Award (sometimes called
the
Alternative
Nobel
Prize) for his work in environmental design.

Graham adds, He wasnt

universally liked. One reason being he was committed
to disrupt the status quo of
misguided unfeeling management. First feel fear,
then get angry. Then go with
your life into the fight. He
was eloquent about the need
for peaceful warriors as he
called them to challenge the
stupidity of ill-governance
on a global scale. The pinnacle of his career to his
students was the publication
in 1988 of The Permaculture
Designers Manual.
Following Bills death tributes have flowed.
May his words and teachings of permaculture continue to spread like chickweed
in our gardens, a post on
the Facebook page Women
Who Farm.
Thank you Bill for providing humanity with an educa-

tion that no other leader has

been able to achieve. RIP,
You started a quiet revolution. You have sown the
seeds of change, and you
will live in the bounties of
nature, in every flower, in
every tree, in the soil and
the water, and in every
hand that nurtures nature,
wrote a Facebook user from
California.
I will leave the final words
on Bill to David Holmgren.
David writes, With the
passing of Bill Mollison
in Tasmania on Saturday
comes the end of an era for
many thousands of people
around the world whose
lives were transformed by
the teaching and writing of
one of Australias most influential ecological pioneers.
My two year student/mentor
relationship with Bill from
late 1974 was certainly the

defining relationship that set

the course for the rest of my
life. Bills brilliance was in
gathering together the ecological insights, principles,
strategies and techniques
that could be applied to create the world we do want
rather than fighting against
the world we reject. His personal life was as tumultuous as his public persona, at
times tragic but always full
of the passion and contradiction that the term ecological warrior represents. His
legacy lives on in all those
who were transformed by
his teaching.
RIP Bill Mollison.

Selling in Spring
Geoff White
CEO, REIV

The market is on the move with more homes traditionally going

to sale in spring. And with solid prices in many areas of the state
this year and warmer weather on the way now is a good time
to list your home.
The first step in the sale process is to select the right agent, which
requires careful consideration.
The reputation of the agent is one of the most important factors. A
well regarded agent will be knowledgeable in your local area and
may even know potential buyers who have missed out on previous
properties.
Your agent will be able to advise you on the benefits of different
sales methods, the best way to advertise your property, and
perhaps improvements to maximise your selling price.
A well presented home says welcome. It doesnt have to be a
show place but it should appear a comfortable home in which
to live.
Your home will be one of many on the market - particularly in
spring - and in order to achieve the best price within a set time,
your home should appeal to as many potential buyers as possible.
Experience shows that vendors who make an extra effort on
presentation usually achieve a quicker sale and sometimes, a
higher price.
First impressions do count, so ensure the overall view of your
home including the yard, fences and roof appear neat and tidy
from the street.
Small improvements can make a big difference so clear the gutters,
clean windows, screens, doors and awnings. Sweep driveways and
patios, spreading gravel on unsealed driveways and lay pine bark
on unsightly surfaces.
If you have a garden, its a good idea to trim shrubs and mow
lawns, including the footpath. Outdoor furniture can also be
arranged to give your home the appearance of comfort and leisure.
For more information on choosing an REIV member agent, visit

Avenue went into Round
1 of the BDBD 2016/17 Pennant season confident of a
good first showing, given
that Avenue was victorious
in each of their four practice matches. Unfortunately,
things didnt quite go to
plan.
Division 1 hosted Mt Xavier with two of the four rinks
successful. Grant Stirlings
rink led comfortably all day
to run out 18 shot winners.
Bill Hawkens rink was also
successful with a three shot
win. Steve Sullivans return
to the club was dimmed by
a 16 shot loss, whilst Dino
Borattos rink also struggled
against strong opposition,
going down by 13 shots.
Final scores Avenue 87 lost
Mt Xavier 95
Division 2 travelled to
Webbcona with a side containing four new players to
the club. The only highlight

was a gutsy four shot win by

Bob Delaneys rink, although
both Peter Glass rink did establish an early lead (9 shots
up after 16 ends) only to see
the opposition win seven of
the last nine ends to secure a
two shot victory.
Dave McKendricks team
matched their opposition
for the first 16 ends, and led
21-20 with two ends to go
before dropping seven shots
to go down by six. Stewart
Wilsons rink had no luck
early, being down 0-12 after
five ends, but at no stage did
they throw in the towel and
virtually went shot for shot
from that point on to ultimately go down by 14 shots.
Final score Avenue 79 lost
Webbcona 97
Division 5 was definitely
the best performed Avenue
Division for the day, despite the game ending in a
nail-biting finish. Ray Humphreys rink kept their noses
in front for most of the day to
win by four shots, whilst Ian
Jones rink and Di Hardiments rink both drew. Mike
Roberts first game at the
club was also a thrilling affair, coming back from 11-17
down at end 20, to take the

lead on end 24, only to drop

two shots on the final end
to lose by the narrowest of
margins.
Final score Avenue 85 def
Bunninyong 82
Division 7 hosted Smeaton
in Avenues first Pennant
game on the new green.
For Avenue octogenarian
Stan Cumming, showing
age is no barrier in bowls,
scored a solid six shot win.
Don Lemins rink was not
far behind, winning by two
shots after holding off a late
charge by the opposition.
Oscar Mauffs rink showed
courage in their ten shot
loss, which was mitigated
by the fact the side only had
three players, meaning they
played six bowls against the
oppositions eight bowls- always a difficult assignment.
Unfortunately, Dot Cooks
rink had a most frustrating
day at the office, but bowled
better than the 9-40 score
line suggests.

With the smell of polish wafting in the

breeze and the early October sun catching
freshly minted bowls stickers, the 2016/17
season of the CHBD is underway.
Bacchus Marsh travelled to Kyneton in
search of an uplifting victory to kick start the
season, but had to be content with halving
the rinks in a tight 11 shot 4-14 loss to the
Redlegs.
Marsh were collared early in its first hit
out on grass for the year by the home side,
dropping 10 shots across the first end on

each rink, and from there were kept at arms

length for the day despite a couple of strong
rink wins.
Craig Norris lifted his side to a 24-16 win
while new recruit Lenny Kean was victorious
24-17.
Justin Webster found no luck at all in what
proved to be trying conditions, losing 14-32
while Phil Minetti couldnt get over the line
either, going down 15-23.
Division 2 won 16-2, 96-86 at home against
Gisborne and Division 3 - also at home came away with a 14-2, 73-66 victory over
Lancefield.
