Q.2 Give the draw backs to use the period of a pendulum as a time standard.
Answer:
As the period of a simple pendulum is
= 2
Q.3 Why do we find it useful to have two units for the amount of substance, the
kilogram and the mole?
Answer:
The unit kilogram can be used for weighing (solid, liquid and gas) as well as for the
mass of microscopic particles i.e. electron, proton. Whereas mole is a unit for amount
of substance used when substance is in small amount and number of entities are under
consideration.
Q.4 Three students measured the length of a needle with a scale on which minimum
division is 1mm and recorded as (i) 0.2145 m (ii) 0.21 m (iii) 0.214m which record
is correct and why?
Answer:
As the least count of the scale is 1 mm so

Q. 5 An old saying is that A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. What
analogous statement can you make regarding experimental data used in a
computation?
Answer:
The analogous statement should be The experimental data in a computation, is as good
as it has less absolute uncertainty (precision) and less fractional uncertainty (error).
Q.6 The period of simple pendulum is measured by a stop watch. What type of
errors are possible in the time period?
Answer:
The possible errors in a timing experiment should be
Personal error
Systematic error
Timing uncertainty due to human reflections in observation as a personal error and the
least count of the timing device may result a zero error as a systematic error.

Q.9 The wavelength of a wave depends on the speed v of the wave and its
frequency f. Knowing that [] = [L], [v] = [L T-1] and [f] = [T]-1 Decide which of
the following is correct,
(1) f = v or (2) f = v /
Answer:
Applying dimensional analysis:
(1)
L.H.S=Dimensions of f = [f] = [T-1].
R.H.S=Dimensions of f = [v] x [] = [LT-1] x [L] = [L2 T-1] .
As
[T] [L2 T-1]
L.H.S R.H.S
So Equation (1) is dimensionally incorrect. ..
(2) Now
L.H.S = dimensions of [f] = [T-1]
R.H.S = dimensions of [v / ] = [LT-1] / [L] = [T-1]
Since
[T-1] = [T-1]
L.H.S = R.H.S
So equation (2) is dimensionally correct.
