1-1 (2 Points): Heat and Mass Interaction

The interaction between two systems due to temperature difference is called:
a) Mass transfer

b) Heat transfer

c) Work transfer

d) Conservation of energy

1-2 (3 points): Heat and Work Concepts

On a hot summer day, a student turns his fan on when he leaves his room in the morning. When he returns in
the evening, will the room be warmer or cooler than neighboring rooms? Why? Assume all doors and windows
are closed and walls are insulated.

1-3 (3 points): Heat and Work Concepts

Consider two identical rooms, one with a refrigerator in it and the other without one. If all the doors and
windows are closed, will the room that contains refrigerator be cooler or warmer than the other room? Why?

1-4 (15 points): Work of piston cylinder assembly closed system analysis
Consider as a system the gas in a cylinder; the cylinder is fitted with a piston on which a number of small weights
are placed. The initial pressure of the gas is 115 kPa, and the initial volume of the gas is 0.035 cubic meters. Now
let a Bunsen burner be placed under the cylinder and let the volume of the gas increase to 0.054 cubic meters
while the pressure remains constant. What is the work done by the system during this process?
Now let the system return to its original status, with initial pressure of 115 kPa and initial volume of the gas of
0.035 cubic meters. A Bunsen burner is placed under the cylinder and lets remove the weights from the piston
at such rate that, during the process, the temperature of the gas remains constant. Assume ideal gas model is
valid. What is the work done by the system during this second process if the final volume of the gas at the end of
the process becomes 0.2 cubic meters?
(Answer: (a) ~2.2 kJ, (b) ~7.0 kJ)

1-5 (10 Points): First Law of thermodynamics for a close system

A well-insulated rigid tank contains 4 kg of saturated liquid-vapor mixture of water at 100 kPa. Initially, threequarters of the mass is in the liquid phase. An electric resistor in the tank is connected to a 110-V source and a
current if 6A flows through the resistor when the switch is turned on. Determine how long it will take to
vaporize all the liquid in the tank.
(Answer: ~ 160 minutes)

1-6 (8 Points): First Law of thermodynamics and ideal gas law

A 0.5-m3 rigid tank containing hydrogen at 25C and 800 kPa is connected by a valve to another 0.5-m3rigid tank
that holds hydrogen at 35C and 250 kPa. Now the valve is opened and the system is allowed to reach thermal
equilibrium with the surroundings, which are at 15C. Determine the final pressure in the tank. Assume ideal gas
law is a valid assumption.
(Answer: ~ 500 kPa)

1-7 (15 Points): First Law of thermodynamics

Steam at 3MPa, 400C enters a turbine with a volume flow rate of 5 m3/s. An extraction of 15% of the inlet mass
flow rate exits at 600kPa, 200C. The rest exits the turbine at 20kPa with a quality of 90%, and a velocity of
20m/s. Determine the volume flow rate of the extraction flow and the diameter of the final exit.
(Answer: 2.7m3/s & 4.3 m)

1-8 (20 Points): First Law of thermodynamics

The rate of steam flow is 25kg/s with
300kW power input to the pump. Piping
diameters are 200mm from steam
generator to turbine and 75mm from the
condenser to the steam generator.
Determine the power output of the
turbine and the heat transfer rate in the
condenser.
