Funkes speciality is an off-set system with asymmetrical flow gaps which create highly efficient
and cost effective units with performance advantages of up to 17% compared to conventional
plate heat exchangers.
The high level of customer retention confirms
that this product is in high demand. More than
50% of our plate heat exchangers are supplied to
regular customers which have kept coming back
for ten years or more.

Set-up and function of a plate heat exchanger


The plate heat exchanger consists of a pack with
linked-up embossed plates with passage openings. Every second plate is staggered by 180
creating a flow gap in each case. All plates are
provided with gaskets, which completely seal the
various flow gaps from the outside and separate
the second media involved in the heat exchange.

The plate pack is mounted in a rack and is


pressed between the fixed plate and pressure
plate by means of clamping bolts.
Warm and cold media are normally led through
the plate heat exchanger in one-pass or multipass counterflows in order to guarantee a maximum heat transfer.

Finding the right plate


At first glance, the plate heat exchangers from different manufacturers seem to be very similar. However,
the secret behind efficient heat transfer is inside the plate pack whose performance depends on a whole
range of factors aside from plate size and number. Ultimately, these factors determine the size of the
device and the operating costs.

Plates with different plate corrugation angles can


be used.
Obtuse corrugation angles result in longer thermal paths and higher heat transfer rates which in
turn lead to a higher pressure drop.
Acute corrugation angles are chosen if the
required pressure drop is lower.

The off-set profile allows for the formation of


asymmetrical flow gaps. The advantage is that
the cross-sectional areas of the warm and the
cold side of the plate heat exchanger may be
approximately 30% larger or smaller.

Maximum protection against mixing of the media

embossed together are laser-welded at the
passage openings.

Off-set profile

The off-set profile represents an additional control


element for cost-effective plate heat exchanger
solutions. An oil cooler, for example, is significantly smaller and cheaper if the volume flow on the
cooling water side can be increased. Compared
to symmetrical plates, up to 17% less exchange
surface is needed.
The plate pack is always calculated by our
state-of-the-art design software.
First priority is to find the most cost-effective
solution for the customer.

Welded cassettes (welded plate pairs) are used
for special media, such as ammonia in cooling
systems.
Conventional gaskets are used for sealing on the
water side between the cassettes.

Plate materials

1.4401/AISI 316L is normally used because of its


resistance to corrosion and chloride damage.

All gaskets are installed twice in the entry and


exit area, creating a safety space which is open
to the outside. It prevents media from mixing if
the gasket leaks.

ViFlow helps the customer with the maintenance and the provision of spare parts for all of the products
we market. Our service does not end with the delivery of the product.

Maintenance and spare parts

Certificates

Our delivery includes operating and service


instructions which allow the customer or the
customers own service company to carry out
routine service operations. If needed, we will be
happy to help.
We also provide annual maintenance contracts
to ensure a long service life for every piece of
equipment we deliver.
The annual contract also ensures the availability
of spare parts. Our spare parts stock guarantees
prompt delivery without delay.
The gaskets of a plate heat exchanger have to
be replaced from time to time. If the task is critical
or when the aggressivity of the media requires the
gaskets to be replaced more often than normal,
we recommend a replacement gasket kit and possibly also the acquisition of replacement plates.
