Pre-Preparation Lab 1
Part A: How does UV-Visible Spectroscopy work?
The Pre-preparation should contain the following sections:
1. Abstract - define UV-Vis spectroscopy
2. Introduction - the history of UV-Vis spectroscopy
3. Theory - how it works i.e. what equations are used (if any), and the set-up of the machine
(include a schematic diagram)
4. Sample preparation-Indicate sample preparation prior to performing the analysis
5. Indicate how the analysis/measurement of the prepared sample is conducted
6. Sample/Example of analysis (the results from the UV-Vis spectroscopy of a compound and
what it means)
7. Limitations of this spectroscopic method
8. References (correctly listed according to the Harvard system)

Part B: How does FTIR Spectroscopy work?

The Pre-preparation should contain the following sections:
1. Abstract - define FTIR spectroscopy
2. Introduction - the history of FTIR spectroscopy
3. Theory - how it works i.e. what equations are used (if any), and the set-up of the machine
(include a schematic diagram)
4. Sample preparation-Indicate sample preparation prior to performing the analysis
5. Indicate how the analysis/measurement of the prepared sample is conducted
6. Sample/Example of analysis (the results from the FTIR spectroscopy of a compound and
what it means)
7. Limitations of this spectroscopic method
8. References (correctly listed according to the Harvard system)
Instructions
Only submit one Pre-preparation evidence for each group upon lab session,
Quiz about these two equipment will be asked during the lab (10 marks)
Must be hand-writing and all the group members contribute to the content of Prepreparation evidence
must write everything in your own words and not copy directly from the internet or any
books, unless referenced properly - any plagiarism evidence, will be charged to
discipline act and equate to negative marks.
