I. Identify the following. Write your answer on the space provided before the number.
STICTLY NO ERASURE
1. A body at rest will remain at rest or in motion at that constant
velocity, unless acted upon by some unbalanced external force. Also called law of inertia.
2. States that energy is neither created nor destroyed, but only turned
from one form of energy into another.
3. Energy of the system that is the sum of the kinetic and potential
energy.
4. The energy that an object of mass m has by virtue of its position
relative to the surface of the earth.
5. An energy transfer that occurs when a force acts on an object that
moves.
II. Solve the following problems with COMPLETE SOLUTION. STRICTLY
NO CHEATING.
1. The pulley has negligible mass, and both it and the inclined plane
are frictionless. Block A has a mass of 1 kg, block B has a mass of 2
kg, and an angle of 30 degrees. If the blocks are released from rest
with the connecting cord, what is their final velocity when block B
has fallen 25 cm. a) use newtons 2nd law of motion b) use the
principle of conservation of energy. 1.57 m/s
2. The figure shows four penguins that are being playfully
pulled along very slippery
(frictionless) ice by a curator. The masses of three
penguins and the tension in two of the cords are
m1=12 kg, m3=15 kg, m4=20 kg, T2=111N,
and T4=222N. Find the penguin mass m2 that
is not given. 23 kg
3. A father racing his son has half the
kinetic energy of the son, who has half the mass of the father. The
father speeds up by 1 m/s and then has the same kinetic energy as the
son. What is the original speed of the father? 2.4 m/s.
4. A stone with a weight of 5.29 N is launched vertically from ground level
with an initial speed of 20 m/s, and the air resistance on it is 0.265N
throughout the flight. What is the maximum height reached by the
stone. 19.41 m
5. The object in the figure is in equilibrium and has a weight Fw = 80 N.
Find FT1, FT2,FT3,FT4. 37N,88N,77N,0.14kN
6. The (nonconservative) force propelling a 1.5x103 kg car up a mountain
road does 4.7x106 J of work on the car. The car starts from rest at sea
level and has a speed of 27 m/s at an altitutde of 2x102 m above sea
level. Obtain the work done on the car by the combined forces of
friction and air resistance. -1.21x106J
7. A 25 lb block is pushed 100 ft up the slopping surface of a plane inclined at an
angle of 37 degrees to the horizontal by a constant force F of 32.5 lb acting

parallel to the plane. The coefficient of friction between the block and the plane is 0.25. Compute the
increase in kinetic energy. 1250 ft-lb
