Conclusion

The aim of my thesis is to render the coordinates of Fieldings novels as they transpire from both
the topos and the atmosphere which unveil the unique perfume of his characters personalities
and the talent of the author as a sketcher in his attempts to portrait men and women of the 18 th
century England. It is organized in four chapters which try to make proof of the incontestable
value of the authors work. The first section of this theme explores the all beauties that London
has, the winding streets, historically monumental and captured in the annals of the time. In my
opinion I think London in the eighteenth century period is a modest city, with simple architecture
and a lot of churches such as Nicholas Hawksmoor which in particular has been given the palm
by posterity. I have described London like a great and monstrous thing, a city full of crimes and
punishment, which has a big influence on the peoples ordinary life. Its influence ranged hardly
over the citys ecclesiastical, domestic and institutional buildings in a way that no contemporary
architect chose to match. The introduction and the first chapter describe a traditional collection of
essays on the London, England and also on the novels that appeared in the writings Joseph
Andrews and Amelia, and it is very much concerned with depicting a clear history, and, at the
same time, I have tried to explore the diverse and unsettling contexts that informed the genre of
the novels. When I speak about London I want to demonstrate the inventive and liberating
possibilities that emerge when we avoid such ultimately limiting habits of mind.
In the second chapter, I focused on the social, economic, ideological and cultural field in
which the novel of Fielding is situated. Joseph Andrews is a novel in four volumes full of
interesting action which catches its characters in the web of literary descriptions and decadence.
The author described step-by-step the literary history of the novel and the models with which we
have consistently read the novel. In Joseph Andrews, Fielding, advanced the description of
London like a city of crimes, streets full of ragged fellows, and this is one of that novels which
describes very explicitly the habits, the life and traditions in London. It is one of the best sources
of inspiration referring to the English life and customs in the 18 th century. Also, in this novel,
Fielding refers to the literary discussions that are mostly about religion, philosophy and
commerce.
In the third section of my thesis I have spoken about another important novel called
Amelia. Here I consider the way of the novel has changed our thinking and, in turn, the way

our thinking has changed about the novel. In Amelia we can see the active exuberances of
Joseph Andrews corrected by a higher art. To me, Amelia is the exuberant romantic faculty
of Joseph Andrews and its pleasant satire. This was the third great novel of Fielding and was
the most important moment of his life. Amelia is a book in which the passages converge
towards a more mysterious and a less idyllic universe in which prison and crimes intermingles to
develop a sense of reality in the lower parts of society. This is presented by Captain Booth in
Newgate prison when he tells his companion Miss Mathews about his wifes unfortunate and
unlike carriage accident. I have discussed many authors in this writing, some of whom were
previously little mentioned, but I focused only on one author. I have tried to insert the situational
discourse into a fictional text which explores the way in which the genre is formulated and the
variety of ways in which it interacts, reflects, informs and qualifies other reading experiences.
