REED CITY Osceola

County Prosecuting Attorney
Tyler Thompson received
the governors nod Monday
to serve as the next MecostaOsceola Probate Court judge.
Even though county offices
were closed for Columbus
Day, Thompson was in his office working when Gov. Rick
Snyder called and offered him
the job.
I got a call from him this
morning and he asked if I
would like the appointment,
Thompson said.
Osceola County 49th Circuit

Court judges Scott Hill-Kennedy and Kimberly Booher will

fill the remainder of Thompsons four-year term that expires Dec. 31. Thompson was
running unopposed as prosecuting attorney.
Thompson was first elected
prosecuting attorney in 2012.
He applied in late July to fill
the remainder of Judge Marco
Menezes six-year-term.
Menezes resigned from office
Sept. 30.
Thompson will have to run
for the seat in November 2018.
Thompson said Mondays
call was the culmination of
a long process. He said the

first step was meeting with

a qualification committee in
Lansing. Qualified candidates
then met with the governors
staff. There were six candidates seeking the position.
Through his work as the
Osceola Prosecuting Attorney and in private practice,
Thompson has gained extensive knowledge and experience in every kind of matter
that comes before the probate
court, Snyder said. I am
confident that he will continue to provide exemplary
public service in his new position.
Before being elected pros-

ecuting
attorney,
he worked
for the
McCurdy,
Wotila and
Porteous
PC law firm
on probate
matters.
ThompThompson
son earned
a bachelors degree from Hope
College in 2004 and his law degree from Michigan State University College of Law in 2007.
During law school, Thompson
interned for the Michigan Attorney Generals Office.

What WAS it?

National Geographic
says its snatch-n-grab front
leg action when hunting
is so rapid that our human
eyes can barely see it. And
while we are on the topic
of eyes they have five, so
once again, hunting, clearly is their specialization.
The praying mantis, because of its quiet hunting
prowess, is a major friend
to farmers despite its relatively short lifecycle of a
single year.
Why are they named
the way they are? Because
these insects, which can
range up to about 6-inches
in length, tend to look like
they are bowed in prayer.
Moths, grasshoppers
and flies are often on the
menu. The beneficial ladybug never is, it seems.
Meanwhile the mantis
itself has to be wary of being a menu item for bats,
snakes and large frogs. All
and all, they tend to quietly
hide on plants and using
their triangular head
that actually can swivel

a rare 180-degrees, they

are patient hunters, not
aggressive stalkers. Yes,
the rumor that the females
may choose to feast upon
the males mid or post sex
is a truism but not a given.
Seems his bodily sacrifice
gives her extra nutrition
she as she generates the
next generation.
The State of Connecticut
so appreciated the praying
mantis population (despite
it being non-native), that in
the 1970s they designated
it their State Insect.
(And no. Michigan has not
bestowed that honor on
any of the insect realm,
although we are proud to
have a State Reptile the
docile painted turtle, and a
State Fossil the mastodon.)
Starting to have a new
appreciation for the sticklike little fellow?
Fear not if you have yet
to wander across one in the
wilds. For a mere $30-plus
a praying mantis egg sack
is as close to your backdoor as an Amazon.com

delivery. Or order a pair of

young pre-teen mantises
from an online source for
around $15.
Some African tribes
attribute good luck to
the person upon whom
a mantis lands; French
lore says the sighting of
one represents a lost child
having successfully found
his/her way home; and for
those believing that there
is a spirit essence to each
animal, the praying mantis
symbolizes a peace and
calm needed or exhibited
in ones life and your inner
voice or intuition trying to
get your attention.

REED CITY Its a misconception, said Patricia

Glazier, that one has to

laughter from her fellow

We just play the board,
she said, noting that it is

The Scrabble group

the Reed City Area District

They are such a great
group, said Librarian
Heather Symon Bassett.
They are some characters.
The group of six doesnt
really take the words seriously. They like to win, but
they like spending time
with each other, more.
We like to play, Glazier
said. Its a lot about the

Anna Hradel said they
all met each other via

have become friends. She
said she grew up playing

ing said of why she started
the group.
Its a good mental exercise, Betzing said of the
popular board game where
players strive to forge
words with 100 tiles.
At first there were three
players attending, now
Betzing said it is at six
and they would love to
have more join. It is open
to men and women of all
ages. The group jokes no
spelling tests are required.
Bonnie Dalman grew up
playing the game with her
mom and still loves to play.
Dalman started coming
more than a year ago after
she saw the event posted
on the library calendar.
Glazier said the members dont challenge many
words, because if they

are wrong, the challenger

misses a turn.
She said, they strive for
seven-letter words. One
of the regulars, Elaine
LaPorte, 88, has gotten the
most seven-letter words of
any of the members.
According to the National Scrabble Association,
the game was designed by
architect Alfred Mosher
Butts. In the early 1930s,
he reportedly endeavored
to design a board game
combining elements of
anagrams and crossword
puzzles. Players draw seven letters and from words.
They use letters and draw
new ones not to exceed
seven.

called the game Lexiko,

Klepp, a self-professed

in Big Rapids but is looking for a local permanent
residence.
As he begins his new adventure as the music educator in Reed City Schools,
Klepp said he handles
stress by embracing his
hobbies and lifestyle-which
centers around sports of
all kinds and plenty of outdoor activities.
I like the fact that there
is a lot of outdoors around
here, because when I am
not in the band room or
playing music, you will

Klepp said his passion
for music and band began
in grade school, where
by the sixth grade he was
playing percussion and
the trombone, and, he said,
along the way, found his
calling.
Being in band in school

Klepp said adjustment
from a larger city to smalltown life has been easier
than expected, and he
sums up the reason for the
smooth transition simply:
the people.
Klepp said the positive
energy and warm welcome
of the students, the school
administration, band parents and local community
members have made him
feel right at home as he
takes on this first year at
his new school home.
I have been so impressed that I have witnessed zero negativity
here, said Klepp, who
noted the small-town community support for the
school, the band program
and the kind introductions
he has received has made
the adjustment easy.

to the state and hopefully
expedite the brewery opening.
Murphy plans to handdeliver the form to the governors office. Then, he will
wait for approval.
Murphy said he is working with someone in the
governors office to help
the brewery come to fruition.
The biggest holdup,
Murphy said, Ive been
doing everything out of my
pocket.
He said he could have
opened shortly after purchasing the building on
July 8, 2013. Yet, it would
have meant surrendering
45 percent of his business.
Thats the kind of road
blocks Ive been hitting,
said Murphy, who has had
a long-time passion for
brewing.
Yet, Murphy said the city
has been great about working with him.
Reed City Manager Ron
Howell said he wants to see
this project reach success.

So does resident Bruce

Finley.
I drive by this place and
always look to see if it is
open, yet, Finley said.
I think it will be a great
addition to the neighborhood.
Finley, who moved to
Reed City six months ago,
after living in Detroit and
Cincinnati, has come to
enjoy breweries.
I was excited to see the
sign, he said. Then it was
a letdown to know they
werent open.
He isnt alone. There are
many people clamoring
via Facebook to find out
when Murphy will open.
Which has the owner feeling hopeful of making a
go of the business in Reed
City. A city he enjoys being
a part of.
He said quality is what is
going to set him apart.
Im very particular with
everything I mix, Murphy said. If something
is wrong, Im not going to
serve it.
