MUS 465
Assignment # 1 for Grade Level(s) 3-4

Objectives:

TSW keep a steady beat.

TSW match pitch and voice inflection.
TSW follow given directions.

Lesson Plan:
Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Motivation):
1. Explain a story to the students about how you have recently have made friends
with a fly who sometimes doesnt quite understand personal space. Although you
do still want to be friends, sometimes the fly doesnt quite get the message, so when
you really want the fly to go away, doing this dance seems to get the message
across.
Process:
1. Begin by teaching Shoo Fly, Dont Bother Me to the students using immersion.
2. Sing through the song at least once before allowing others to join.
3. Once everyone has joined in encourage the students to begin moving their bodies
with the music, such as through lightly tapping feet or marching in place.
4. During the A section take three steps forward, tap your foot, and take three
steps backwards, tapping the foot again. Repeat throughout the entire A section.
5. Instruct the students to form one large circle.
6. Holding hands this time, have the students both sing and do the movements as
earlier learned in the A section.
7. In the B section choose a pair of students to hold up their arms, while the
students opposite in the circle move forward (with everyone still holding hands) to
go under the students with their arms raised. Continue this until each student has
walked under the original two students arms.
8. During the motion of the students travelling in the B section, be sure to repeat
the section as many times as necessary until each student makes it under.
Accommodations:
1. A student who is in a wheel chair can have a buddy push them around to the beat
while using his or her hands to show the steady beat.
2. An ELL student can have this game played in any translation to accommodate
any language needs.

Assessment/Evaluation:
1.Observe the students who have trouble keeping in step during the A section for
further evaluation.
2. Listen for students having trouble matching pitch for later remediation.
