Patel is only Antwerp

Diamond broker
By LUKE NACEI
Success is no accident.
It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all,
love what you are doing or learning to
do.
And this is exactly what Nadi businessman Mr Romil Patel did to be
where he is today.
Mr Patel, the chief executive and
founder of Jewels Fiji, also a gemologist is now the only certified Antwerp
Diamond Broker in practice after the
retired of the Boomerang Jewellers director Jayanti Lal.
This now means that Mr Patel can
directly buy diamond from the worlds
largest Diamond Quarter in Antwerp.
Antwerp is a Diamond Company
which specializes in superior quality diamond rings and jewellery. It is where
almost billions of dollars of rough diamonds are cut and polished every day
before being distributed in the wholesale and retail markets worldwide for
sale.
Mr Patel spent a week of April in Antwerp, meeting the diamond dealers
and learning about the diamonds, categories and witnessing the cutting and
polishing of gems.
Talking more of his success, Mr Patel said it is his passion about diamonds
that took him to discover the next level
of industry which is direct dealing from
the source.
For me it was the passion I had, he
said.

Sometimes you have a passion

for something and it could be hidden
passion, like you might be doing something every day but inside you have a
love for something else then sometimes it doesnt come out because you
are not in the right environment.
He studied gemology and jewellery arts at the Gemological Institute of
America (GIM).
Mr Patel said his business was nurtured by himself and his wife. This was
a step forward to begin their renowned
business.
Despite the challenges faced the
couples defied all odds making sure
their goal was achieved.
We didnt have any retail experience at that time so it was quiet challenging but the good thing we had was
knowledge. Those days were really difficult for us because we were looking
for new clients but the main thing is we
knew what we were buying, he said.
It was a lovely journey where we
opened the first shop in Port Denarau.
We have one now in Suva, Nadi and
another at the Sofitel on Denarau Island.
Mr Patel said they have a Fijian Made
license to manufacture in Fiji. For this
they will be bringing in diamond directly from Antwerp and will also be
making customised jewellery for the
customers.
In the pipe line
We continue to grow and we look
forward to doing some innovative
things here so that customers can always see us as their leaders, Mr Patel
said.
In this area of jewelry we are so
fortunate that we havent left anything
unturned. We have looked at the whole
spectrum and we do this as a service to
our customer and we love doing what
we do.
Jewels Fiji in another four weeks
will launch a new range of products
which will be using Antwerp diamonds
in their Fijian made products.
Mr Patel will be travelling to one of
the worlds largest diamond mines,
The only Antwerp Diamond Broker in Fiji and Chief Executive and Fouder of Jewels Fiji Romil Patel.

Health Minister Tours Nadi Hospital

The Minister for Health and Medical Services Hon. Rosy Sofia Akbar today visited the
Nadi Hospital to look at the challenges faced
there.
The Minister held discussions with the
Nadi Hospital board of visitors to discuss
possible solutions to the limited spaces that
have been complained about at the hospital.
It is my first visit to the hospital and given
that I grew up in Nadi, there have been a lot
of negative reports about the hospital thus
the reason for my visitation.

ter Akbar said.

We have met with private practitioners
in Nadi who are willing to work together
with Government in addressing this and we
have come up with a solution to pay them
$50 an hour to assist.
Government, she says will also pay specialized private doctors and surgeons $80 an
hour for their services.

There are issues that need to be dealt

with especially the issue of spacing and the
limited resources and we are here to address that.
She said work on improving the hospital
which shares 15 doctors and 80 nurses with
Namaka Health centre would begin soon.
We understand that there is a problem
on the doctor-to-patient ration and we are
working on addressing that as well, Minis-

PM lauds Hindu Group

Prime Minister participated at the Sevashram Sangha Ganesh Utsav and commended the devotees and below participants at the Sevashram Sangha Ganesh Utsav. Photos: SUPPLIED.

Prime Minister Voreqe

Bainimarama has thanked
Fiji Sevashram Sangha for
naming this Nationwide
Celebration A Celebration
of National Unity.
The PM was speaking
during the Ganesh Utsav
celebrations held at My
Suva Picnic Park, in Suva.
I want to applaud Nasese Fiji Sevashram Sangha
for naming this Nationwide
Celebration A Celebration
of National Unity, not just
because of the huge number of people celebrating
all over Fiji, but because of
the way you have reached
out to all Fijians to invite
them to share in this celebration to share the joy and
devotion you feel, he said.
Mr Bainimarama said it
was a desire for him to be

part of the celebration.

It is a pleasure for me
to be here today as part of
this grand Nationwide Ganesh Utsav 2016. Of course,
my part is very small compared to the dedication
and devotion that more
than 10,000 of you have
shown at 55 venues all
across Fiji. I congratulate
you and express to you my
sincere admiration for your
deep devotion to your faith
and to your willingness to
sacrifice your time and energy and resources for it,
he said.
I was always taught to
remember that there is a
power that exists higher
than me. In my work as
Prime Minister, it is my faith
in God that guides me in
serving the Fijian people. It
is my faith that shows me
right from wrong. And it is
that same faith that has given me a deep respect for
people of other religious
traditions and has driven
me to understand and value the ways they worship.
People of faith are important in a free society, a
free society like we now
have in Fiji. People of faith
give a voice to morality
and ethics. They demand
good government, justice
and social responsibility.
When people of all faiths
come together in tolerance
and understanding, when
they love and respect each
other and work for the
common good then peace,
justice and prosperity will
flourish.
Last year, His Excellency the former President
of Republic of Fiji, Honourable Ratu Epeli Nailatikau,
said that Ganesh Utsav has
become a National Festival. And, of course, he
was right. It is celebrated

in every corner of Fiji, from

Viti Levu to Vanua Levu to
Levuka to Taveuni.
Each and every day, we
face new obstacles, new
challenges. But it is through
faith that we overcome
them. Challenges make
us stronger, they make life
meaningful and worthwhile and they sometimes
seem insurmountable, but
we become better people
when we face them and
conquer them.
During the 10 days of
the Ganesh Utsav Celebrations,
more
than
1,200 school students all
from different schools
around Suva and Lautoka
and from different backgrounds and religious traditions participated in the
educational competitions
you that were organised.
The Hindu scriptures
emphasise the central importance of the family, the
importance of the family
sharing food and worshipping together. Seeing you
all praying here together
this afternoon in fact seeing good people all around
Fiji praying together today
shows us that if families
are united, communities
will be united and our nation will be united. We are
one people, one nation
and one destiny. We are
all Fijians.
The PM also congratulated the Fiji Sevashram
Sangha and all Ganesh
devotes around the 55
venues in Fiji for the very
successful
Nationwide
Ganesh Utsav Celebration and thanked them
for making a truly national
celebration of unity, devotion and peace.

by tropical cyclone Winston and
also prepare for future disaster.
The launch of the Building
Resilient Fiji Project saw the
handing over of $1million by the
Fiji Community Development Program, funded by the Australian
Government to the Fiji Red Cross
for disaster preparedness and response in Fiji.

Pacific women and girls can

live free from violence

Pacific women and girls

can live free from violence
- because violence against
them is not inevitable and it
can be prevented, was the
message for more than 40
specialists from across the
Pacific meeting in Nadi, Fiji,
from 12-15 September.
With a theme Road to
Change: A Pacific Regional
Consultation on Prevention
of Violence Against Women
and Girls the meeting was
the first time UN Women has
organized a large gathering
of practitioners and experts
from Fiji, Solomon Islands,
Vanuatu, Tonga, Kiribati,
Papua New Guinea, and Samoa.
Successful methods of preventing violence used in other parts of the world, were
presented by experts from
the United States, Australia
and Uganda.
We all believe violence is
not inevitable, it can be prevented and we are conversing about how we can sys-

tematically address, reduce

and end violence against
women and girls with a particular focus on what drives
this violence, and how it
can be addressed so Pacific
women and girls can live
lives free from violence,
said Aleta Miller, UN Women
Multi Country Representative.
The group looked at a number of prevention elements
including changing attitudes
which condone violence;
examining the gender inequality which underpins
violence against women
and girls; looking at the need
for women and girls to have
self-determination over all
aspects of their lives; and
how best to engage men
and boys in prevention.
Shamima Ali, Fiji Womens
Crisis Centre Co-ordinator
said there needs to be an
increase in prevention programmes, which will tackle
the root cause of violence;
inequality between women
and men.

However, this cannot happen without equally prioritizing services for survivors.
We know when community-based prevention programmes are implemented,
there is an increase in demand for services, she said.
The Solomon Islands Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs Director of Women, Pauline
Soaki, said they have the
opportunity to unify how to
approach and promote prevention of violence against
women and girls across the
Pacific.
And we can strengthen
new and existing networks
to tackle violence in a collaborative way, she said.
The meeting is part of the
UN Womens Ending Violence against Women and
Girls programme, a five year
initiative to help women and
girls live a violence free life.

Health Minister announces

plans to enhance health
care services

A new action plan will be

carried out by the Ministry of
Health and Medical Services
to improve public health
care services across the
country.
This was highlighted in Parliament by the new Minister
for Health and Medical Services Hon. Rosy Akbar.
Minister Akbar highlighted
a number of initiatives that
would be implemented to
increase health care accessibility and which includes
the Nurses Specialisation
Program, arrangement of locum doctors, free medicine
program and capacity building of medical expertise for
medical staff.
The Ministry embarked on
a nursing specialisation program over the past several
years that sent our nurses
overseas for attachments
in specialised areas. These
nurses have performed
extremely well and have
brought knowledge and expertise back to Fiji that they
can pass on to their counterparts.
The Minister stated that the
Ministry was working with
the Ministry of Civil Service
to develop remuneration
packages and structure that

is needed to recruit and retain talented staff.

The Health Ministry will
also embark on new measures to reduce the long
patient-waiting queues in
public hospitals.
We have confirmed that
there will be a pooling of
temporary doctors who can
fill in during busy periods
to help remedy the doctor shortages we face. That
means shorter queues and
more opportunities for Fijians to seek treatment when
they need it. A locum arrangement with Nadi Hospital is currently underway
and others will start up
around the country on the
basis of need.
The locum arrangement
will bring in general practitioners to support our health
sector in critical areas. It is
an immediate fix to the service delivery issues that we
face until we are able to staff
our hospitals appropriately.
Substantial resources are allocated towards recruiting
doctors from overseas to fill
gaps in both the clinical and
public health arenas.
We are currently working
with the Ministry of Civil Service to fill those gaps. So far

they have approved 879 new

positions for medical superintendents, consultants,
chief, principal and senior
medical officers and medical interns and assistants.
So far we have filled 553
of those positions and we
will continue to seek qualified professionals for the
remaining 326 spots. These
new recruitment efforts
come on top of the recent
pay-rise ranging from 56 percent to 81 percent for our
doctors, which has made
major strides in increasing
job security and satisfaction. It has given our doctors
the professional recognition
they deserve, Minister Akbar elaborated.
In the new action plan, the
Ministry will aspire to develop hospitals that provide
a clean environment and
professional healthcare services delivered with a lot of
compassion and empathy.
At the end of this month, a
compiled a list of medicines
will also be made available
to eligible members of the
public, through the Fijian
Governments Free Medicine Program.

Training participants with the Minister for Youth and Sports Hon. Laisenia Tuitubou at Koro Village.
Photo: MINISTRY OF YOUTH & SPORTS.

Community leaders, families, religious

organisations and Government regularly
need to pay attention and meet the needs
of youths, which is required for their growth
and sustainable livelihood in a timely manner.
Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Laisenia Tuitubou, made these comments at
Naibalebale and Najia villages of Viwa Island in the Yasawas last week.
I am urging the leaders of the Vanua and
all religious organisations to be attentive to
youth issues and challenges and partner
with Government and other organisations
for their and our development, Minister Tuitubou said.
The Ministry is committed to providing
empowerment training and resources that
will positively affect the lives of young people, he said.
Government is willing to foster new relations and strengthen its partnership with every organisation and community on strategies that empower youths to become agents
of change in their communities.

Viwa Island is the furthest in the Yasawa

Group of islands and Minister Tuitubou told
the youths there that Government, through
the Youth and Sports Ministry, is on the island to ensure that youth issues and concerns are taken into consideration.
The Ministry is empowering rural youth
clubs to understand that their voice could
make a huge difference in their community,
and that their creative ideas are worth exploring to give them more motivation and
fuel to bring about positive change in life,
said Hon. Tuitubou.
Najia youth leader Voniani Qoro said;
We are so grateful for the Ministers visit. It
has created a greater awareness of the services available within Government and we
have been empowered to strengthen our relations with the Ministry in the future.
We have resources that we can utilise
and we are interested in venturing into
some form of income generating projects
that will benefit the youths and our community, added Qoro.

Students stressed about the

importance of an Open Day
By LUKE NACEI
It is crucial to have an open day to provide tertiary education that was flexible,
innovative, affordable, contemporary and
futuristic.
These were the sentiments echoed by
the Speaker to Parliament Dr Jiko Luveni
while officiating at the University of Fiji
open day in Lautoka.
Open days were a vital part of the process of applying to universities, she said.
They offer potential students the opportunity to look around campuses that
they might one day attend, and help them
narrow down their options.
It is also a wonderful opportunity to
look around and try to visualize ones selfliving, studying and growing as a person
through the lecture halls, campus and atmosphere. Open days could help change
students decisions.
Dr Luveni said there was no better way
to understand what one would be studying than to hear it from the lecturer themselves.
Not only will one find out about the
courses, but can also ask questions that
they have been struggling with.
It is my hope that this event will pro-

vide an opportunity for members of the

community, families with parents and
their children to celebrate the achievements of the university and at the same
time witness the university showcases its
offerings.
I am confident that the open day will
offer meaningful interaction for all stakeholders.
I am very pleased to note that your
university offers a wonderful opportunity
for university leve education for those
who reside in the west.
She was confident that the university
would provide quality education.
Meanwhile, the University of Fijis in
collaboration with other reputable institutions such as Monash University through
their student exchange programme and
the University of the South Pacific through
their joint research.
Dr Luveni urged members of the community, parents and students to embrace
this opportunity and learn as much as
they could about the courses on display.
Students from various schools around
the western division were present at the
days event.

This is the second batch of fire fighters
from Kiribati who have undergone fire fighting training with AFLs Airport Rescue Fire
Fighting Services.
Airports Fiji Limited General Manager Air
Traffic Management and Aviation Training
Isei Tudreu said the regional fire fighters underwent both theoretical and practical training including live fire drills.
The group of fire fighters includes a female officer Loreen Corrie, who is the Fire
Chief in Tarawa and six new recruits from
Cassidy International Airport on Christmas

Island. The training will help the new recruits provide fire fighting services on the
islands, Tudreu said.
With these trainings we are showcasing
to our regional neighbors that we are equally capable just like New Zealand or Australia, of providing tailor made courses for their
specific needs. Fiji is becoming an attractive

of the Universitys inaugural Western Division ceremony.
The students, who were mostly from
MBA program
were joined by family and well-wishers at
the Girmit Center.
USP acting vice chancellor and President
Derrick Armstrong
said 9 percent of the graduates were
women which spoke volumes about gender
balance in education.
Seventy eight percent of the students are
graduating with postgraduate and qualifications including 44 students with Masters of
Business Administration and one with Mas-

ters in Education. Ninety of the graduates

are from Fiji while one is from Cook Island
and one from the Solomon Island.
While addressing the students he said the
ceremony was the result of their sacrifice and
hard work.
You have worked very hard and preserved and can rightly feel proud of your
achievements. Graduations mark the start of
a new and wonderful journey in life, a head
growing from the seeds you have sowed
during your period at the university.
He added that the USP Lautoka campus
had also achieved a lot over the past five

TOWARDS EXCELLENCE IN LEARNING AND KNOWLEDGE CREATION

The new coastal revetment at Vusasivo, Cakaudrove. Photo: SUPPLIED.

A project supported by The University

of the South Pacifics (USP) Pacific Centre
for Environment and Sustainable Development (PaCE-SD) saw the launch of a
new coastal revetment at Vusasivo in Natewa, Cakaudrove on 7 September 2016.
The province of Cakaudrove is located in
Vanua Levu, Fijis second largest island.
Vusasivo is one of the seventy-seven
(77) communities in the Pacific assisted
by the United States Agency for International Developments (USAID) Coastal
Community Adaptation Project (C-CAP)
and is supported by USPs PaCE-SD.
USP Project Community Liaison Officer, Teddy Fong said, they conducted participatory risk mapping and infrastructure
prioritisation exercises with the community in order to identify their most vulnerable needs.
Under this same project the team developed the communities first Disaster
Management Plan which was put to the
test during TC Winston, he explained.
The PaCE-SD Community Coordinators
engage sub-national level government officials in all community engagements to
ensure the sustainability of the project, Mr
Fong added.

The new 210 metre-long coastal revetment will not only sustain the shoreline
but cushion it against big waves, therefore avoiding soil erosion.
It is also expected to protect more than
fifty (50) houses in the village from rising sea
levels and storm surges experienced during
adverse weather conditions.
Fijis former Minister for Lands and
Mineral Resources, Honourable Mereseini Vuniwaqa officiated at the ceremony.
Through the five-year implementation
of the Coastal Community Adaptation
Project (C CAP), USAID will help build
the resilience of vulnerable coastal communities in the Pacific Island region; with
increased capacity for climate-smart decision-making.
Communities will then be positioned to
adapt to the short and longer term effects of
climate change.
C-CAP is building community resilience to climate change in the Pacific
region by: rehabilitating and constructing
new, small-scale community infrastructure; and building capacity for community
engagement for disaster prevention and
preparedness.

Ba Irrigation Trade Show

By LUKE NACEI
Companies
retailing
irrigation and farming
equipment, particularly in
the cane belt areas, showcased their gear at the Irrigation Trade Show that
was held on the September 3rd, 2016 at the Ba Carnival Grounds, Ba.
This initiative is a partnership between the Pacific Communitys Improvement of Key Services to
agriculture (IKSA) Project
and the European Union.
The IKSA project aims
to develop new opportunities in horticultural and
sugar markets through research and the provision
of assistance to farmers to
venture into horticultural
crops through improved
access to agricultural inputs as well as technical
assistance on production
and marketing.
IKSA understands that
clever irrigation is key to
keeping our green spaces
healthy and thriving.
This irrigation trade
show, the first of its kind,
will be displaying new

technologies, best practices and innovative ideas

towards better water management on farms.
The Irrigation Show is
expected to be the premier event to enhance
industry knowledge, network with peers and visit
exhibitors to find solutions
to moisture needs that will
cater to all areas of the irrigation value chain with a
focus on agricultural and
urban industries.
Fijis climate is displaying typical El Nio like
characteristics with drier
and cooler than normal
conditions experienced in
many parts of the country
in recent months.
According to the Fiji Meteorological Office, the El
Nio plaguing the country
is almost certain to continue throughout the September to December 2016
period and most likely until
early 2017.
Since water is integral to
vegetative growth and development, plants require,
within reach of their roots,

water of adequate quality

in appropriate quantity and
at the right time.
IKSA is trying to cushion
the impact of the current
drought situation in Fiji,
with assistance to some
vegetable farmers in the
Sigatoka area with drip irrigation so that a sense
of food security is experienced for both local and
export markets. This trade
show will allow farmers to
become aware of the options available in the Fijian
market that are suitable for
their needs.
The Irrigation Trade
Show was held in conjunction to the Ba Riverside Carnival to ensure
maximum
participation
from the public, including
school students.
Highlights were halfhourly demonstrations by
exhibitors, such as drip
irrigation and sprinkler
systems, as well as water
pumps and tanks, delivery
and suction pipes, generators, solar panels, nursery
materials, and farming ma-

chinery and equipment.

There were ten business houses at the Irrigation Trade Show including
Vinod Patel & Company
Limited, R C Manubhai,
Kasabias, Hydroscape (a
venture of Joes Farm),
Nertiak Equipments, Mahi-

jibhai Hardware, Tropical

Farm Solutions, Gurbachan
Group of Companies, and
Nivis Motors.
IKSA is supported by the

Ministers visit
Vatulele invited
empowers Yanuca to take part in
Youths
seasonal work

Youths of Yanuca commended Minister for Youth and Sports Hon. Laisenia Tuitubou for his visit
to the island. Photo: MINISRY OF YOUTH & SPORTS.

The youths of Yanuca

have commended the Minister for Youth and Sports
Hon. Laisenia Tuitubou for
his visit as it has re-ignited
their passion for active
youth work.
Hon. Tuitubou was on
Yanuca island and travelled to Beqa as he continues his outreach to rural
youths.
Yanuca village youth
club president, Jiuta Lewanitua, said; It was really encouraging to have the
Minister in our village and
we had the opportunity to
dialogue freely.
It is really empowering and indicates Governments commitment towards developing youths
and for that we are very
happy, said Lewanitua.
He added that after listening to presentations by
the Minister and Ministry
officials about its services
they were encouraged to
re-register and revitalise

relations with the Ministry.

History also revealed
that the Yanuca Village
Youth Club was registered
with the Ministry in 1986
with 60 members where it
owned a three tonne truck,
a punt, three outboard motors, a fishing boat and a
cement mixer and established a corporative store
in 1988.
We re-registered in
2002 but was short lived,
said Lewanitua. This visit
by the Minister helped us
ponder on our past successes and has challenged
us to revitalise our youth
club.
However, they are requesting the Ministry to
organise a boat masters
training, and other training in agriculture and skills
training.
Meanwhile, Hon. Tuitubou has challenged the
youth to rise and maximize their natural resourc-

es around sustainably to
earn an income.
We can be millionaires
right here at home, Hon
Tuitubou told the Yanuca
youths. We just need to
identify our purpose, have
a plan, work together and
work towards achieving
those plans with discipline.
He also pleaded with
parents and elders of the
village to continue to encourage and empower the
youths of the village.
For the elders of the village, let us give our full support to our youths of the village. Most of the time, our
youths are set aside and
their voices and ideas left
unheard or ignored.
We tend to forget that
this age group has the people that still possess a lot
of strength and drive when
nurtured properly, Hon.
Tuitubou said.

USP receives patent for Wave

Solar Energy Harvesting Device

USP receives patent for Wave Solar Energy Harvesting Device.

Photo: USP

Two staff and a student of The University of the South

Pacifics (USP) School of Engineering and Physics (SEP),
have officially received a patent for their invention of a
Portable Wave-Solar Energy Harvesting Device by Intellectual Property (IP) Australia.
Lecturers Dr F M Rabiul Islam and Dr Kabir Mamun,
and student Shaneel Prakash invented the portable device, which presents the concept of a low cost wave-solar generation for Pacific Island Countries.
The Portable Wave-Solar Energy Harvesting Device is

a simple self-contained system, which can be deployed

off-shore and useful in situations where there is no supply of electricity within the coastal area.
The main purpose of this device is to provide electricity for lighting and other low powered equipment of on
shore community or fisherman boat. Most of the parts for
the construction of the device are available locally.
The device is a single unit containing all the mechanisms in an average sized barrel that operates with surging and heaving motion of the waves. The systems main
components are floaters, gears, flywheel, electric generator, solar panel, storage device, and control with communication system.
According to Dr Islam, There exists, several methods
of extracting energy from the ocean waves but most of
them are very expensive, oversized and not portable. In
this situation this Portable Wave-Solar Energy Harvesting
Device could be the solution for low cost and affordable
system for Pacific Islands.
The initial project started last year and the first phase
of this project has been converted into a patent and is
still ongoing with new ideas and applications.
Based on the initial output we had applied for funding under USPs 2016 Strategic Research Themes, Dr
Kabir said.
A grant of F$46, 000 has also been secured for further
development of the project.
Dr Islam said that, we are expecting to introduce this
device for the local community, to supply their daily electrical power demand which will in turn improve the social and economic structure of the South Pacific region.
SEP Head of School, Professor Maurizio Cirrincione is
delighted to note that the staff and students of his school
are working on new and innovative projects which can
ultimately lead to the issuing of a patent and in turn may
result in new products.
This level of achievement clearly indicates the originality and commercial potential of the engineering work
being undertaken at USP by staff and students, Professor Cirrincione said.
He added that opportunities for USPs engineering students to work closely on patentable projects such as this

one exposes them to the cutting-edge of the discipline

and consequently broadens their future employment capability and prospects.
Dean of Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment (FSTE), Dr Anjeela Jokhan congratulated the staff
and students of SEP for the fine achievement.
Amongst many other things that we do which are of
excellent quality, patents are yet evidence of achievement. As Dean, I am very proud to say that we at FSTE
believe very strongly in quality and this is evident in many
things that we do including the graduates that we produce, Dr Jokhan said.
Dr Jokhan highlighted that FSTE is a Faculty that gives
students real experience of high quality learning, an opportunity to grow into good scientists and graduates who
can make significant contribution to the Pacific and beyond.
Earlier this year, SEP received a patent for another device, called the Eye-Cane, an intelligent mobility device
for blind and visually impaired individuals that can easily
identify obstacles in their way or alert them when there
is a bend or a change in ground level.
IP Australia is the Australian Government agency that
administers intellectual property rights and legislation
relating to patents, trademarks, designs and plant breeders rights.

Once Upon a Time

Three dads bragging about their childrens success get a surprise when a 4th
dad tells them this.
Four friends who hadnt seen each
other in 30 days reunited at a party. After
several drinks of the men had to use the
rest room.
Those who remained talked about
their kids.
The first guy said, My son is my pride
and joy. He started working at a successful company at the bottom of the barrel.
He studied Economics and Business Administration and soon began to climb the
corporate ladders and now hes the president of the company. He became so rich
that he gave his best friend atop of the line
Mercedes for his birthday.
The second guy said, Darn, thats terrific! My sin is also my pride and joy. He
started working for a big airline, and then
went to a flight school to become a pilot.
Eventually he became a partner in the
company, where he owns the majority of
its assets. Hes so rich that he gave his best
friend a brand new jet for his birthday.
The third man said: Well, thats terrific! My son studied in the best universities
and became and engineer. Then he started his own construction company and
is now a multimillionaire. He also gave
away something very nice and expensive

to his best friend for his birthday: A 30,000

The three friends congratulated each
other just as the fourth returned from the
restroom and asked: What are all the
congratulations for?
One of the three said: We were talking
about the pride we fell for the successes
of our sons.
What about your son?
The fourth man replied: My son is gay
and makes a living dancing as a stripper
at a night club. The three friends said:
What a shame.what a disappointment.
The fourth man replied: No, Im not
ashamed. Hes my son and I love him. And
he hasnt done too bad either. His birthday was two weeks ago and he received
a beautiful 30,000 square foot mansiona
brand new jet and a top of the line Mercedes from his three boyfriends!
SUSAN NORFLEET: STOPPED WEARING MAKEUP
I stopped buying makeup when I wandered into a department store recently
and noticed that the makeup sales ladies
are starting to dress like research scientists. Theyre back there with slide rules
and computerized skin charts. And you
know they probably didnt finish high
school, but theyre wearing lab coats.
LEWIS DIX: WEED THE BAD MEN OUT
Women, you can weed out the bad
men. Advocate more respect for yourselves. Anywhere you go, carry an English
book. As soon as the guy comes up to you:
Here, read paragraph one. Tell me what
its saying. Underline the verb once, the
subject twice. Im going to go dance. Ill
be right back. I bet hell leave you alone.

The event has really

coming in to the country.
They are here to have

said.
The event has brought
people from Australia,
New Zealand, USA, Turkey,
Netherlands, Brazil, England,
So far it has been successful with over a 100

yachts taking part in the

event this year but we
have about 200 yachts out

Not only has that of
the yachts but flashy ones
including super yachts as
well. We started off slow
bit it has been successful.
It was more than what we
had expected.

Encore wins Pirate Race

By LUKE NACEI

Last years Gulf Harbour Marina Pirates Day Race from Musket Cove to Beachcomber Island Resort winner Encore has remained unbeaten. Encore won the race again this
year despite his late start.
Captain Jono was overwhelmed that there were nt yachts by his side when he won
the race.
We have been on this board for the last 20 years and I have been participating in
his races, he said.
The race is good and fun at the same time and besides there was good weather.
There were 20 crews on board during the race with all dressed in pirates clothes and
threw water balloons at each other along the way.
Jig Saw (multihull) came in second while Take a Break (Multihull) captained by
Dave Cull who finished in third spot.
Beachcomber Fiji Island Resort manager Nemia Marama said the event has grown
as compared to last year.
There were 20 yachts in all sizes were part of the event and it attracted to over 200
people to be part of the event, she said.

12 THE JET - FIJIS FIRST COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER

The organizers of the Musket Cove Annual Regatta are looking forward to hosting the
34th Regatta event next year.
This comes after the success completion of the 33rd Annual Regatta.
Musket Cove Resort manager Joe Mar said he was overwhelmed with the turn out
this and is expecting a double next year.
Mr Mar said as the first registered yacht club in Fiji they will continue to host the annual regatta event despite the challenges they face.
We are the first registered yacht club in Fiji and the first on going yacht club in the
south pacific to host the regatta continuously in regardless of anything. They contribute
to us for 30 million per annum and we do not take that for granted. So is there is 300
yachties they spend an average of $500 per day and for the last couple of days it has
provided enormous earning, he said.
Fiji register close to 500-600 visitor (yachties) and they are all paid professionals all
the guys are on retirement and they got money to spend and this event 33 years ago
since its inception has contributed to so many other things.
He went on to say that: Five to 10 cents of the dollars earned goes to various stakeholders not only the tourism industry but to the manufacturing industry but to the service industry as well which helps in the nations building.
Mr Mar also said that this is a thriving industry that could be further developed.
This yacht club is seeing birth to the Denarau yacht club, the one in Savusavu, the
Vuda Marine. The vision of the guy who started this, he opened the doors to those that
would be entrepreneurs. If we combine our resources we will be crossing the billion
dollar mark, so the potentiality of improving this segment of the tourism industry is
vast, he added.

Fiji Airways adds a third year-round

flight from Christchurch.
Services to increase to three flights per
week from the South Island gateway.
It will be even easier to fly between
Christchurch and Fiji from early January,
when Fiji Airways adds a third permanent
service.
The Fiji national carrier already operates two-weekly services between Christchurch and Nadi, and has confirmed a
third service starting 3rd January, reinforcing Fiji Airways position as the only airline
to fly to Fiji all year-round.
Andre Viljoen, Fiji Airways Managing
Director and CEO says New Zealand is a
key growth market for Fiji Airways.
Adding the third flight will increase capacity between Christchurch and Nadi by
a further 336 available seats per week.
The additional flight reflects the
strength of the local market and will give
South Islanders even more travel options
to Fiji and beyond on Fiji Airways, Mr. Viljoen said.
Christchurch Airport Chief Commercial
and Aeronautical Officer, Justin Watson,

Sweet Tweets:

www.epapergallery.com/thejet

says the number of passengers flying from

Christchurch to Fiji grew by 47% last financial year.
Fijis on-going popularity with South
Islanders wanting to relax in the sun encouraged the airline to add the third service, says Watson.
Another attraction for local travellers
flying on Fiji Airways is the connection via
Nadi to Los Angeles, San Francisco and
Hong Kong from Christchurch. The combination of action-packed time in America
and relaxation in Fiji is certainly proving
popular with many South Islanders.
The flight times are good too. Flights
to Fiji will depart Christchurch at 3.35pm
and arrive into Nadi International Airport
at 6.35pm. Departures from Fiji are at
9.30am and arrive into Christchurch at
2.35pm.
The additional flights are on sale now,
with options in both Business and Economy class on the B737-800 aircraft.

Careers Fair a Success

Students attending the Careers Fair at the Shangri-Las Fijian Resort. Photo: USP.

The 2016 Careers Fair for The University of the South Pacifics (USP) School
of Tourism and Hospitality Management
(STHM), held at the Shangri-La Fijian Resort on the Coral Coast on 24 September
was yet another success with eighty-four
students interviewed by eighteen employers in the local tourism industry.
In his welcome address, Head of
School, Professor Marcus Stephenson
said it was the celebration of an initiative
that began a decade ago, and has evolved
and developed into an outstanding event
on the Schools academic calendar.
We term this a Careers Fair but in
many ways, this is a recruitment event
providing real and enabling opportunities for our students to gain placements,
internships and long term careers, with
well-established and highly respected industry stakeholders, Professor Stephen
son said.

Hence, indicating the crucial importance of ensuring that higher education

fosters employability as a key tenant of
the learning objectives and the outcomes
of our degree programmes.
And fundamentally higher education
and the way in which it nurtures, advances and promotes social responsibility, a
key asset of any modern day institution,
however big or small, he said.
USP Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Learning
Teaching and Student Services), Professor
Richard Coll said the fact that the event is
now in its 10th year speaks much of the
sustainability of the programme, not only
from the perspective of the University but
from the industry as well.
He stated that ever since the event was
initiated it has been mutually beneficial
for the University, the industry, and students.
Professor Coll commended the STHM

for an event of this nature because it

brings about that connection, it strengthens the links with industry partners and
gives phenomenal opportunities for students.
It will only work if the School and its
programmes are of the highest quality
and you will be aware that the University
has a strong drive to improve quality, he
said.
According to Professor Coll, the University has embarked on an ambitious
programme of accreditation of its programmes and the School has received full
accreditation from the International Centre of Excellence in Tourism & Hospitality
Education.
He added that the Careers Fair is a clear
link between education and the industry.
In his keynote address, Minister for
Industry, Trade and Tourism Honourable Faiyaz Siddiq Koya acknowledged
Professor Marcus Stephenson, Head of
the STHM and his staff for organising the
event to emphasise and strengthen the
link between the tourism industry and education, which is in itself a crucial link if
our national development objectives are
to be achieved.
This Fair provides everyone involved
with multiple opportunities for employers to seek potential employees, for students to explore the market and attain a
better understanding of job opportunities
and requirements and particularly for
graduating students to market themselves
and seal contracts, he stated.
A Careers Fair he said, is an important
activity that not only finds a job that pays
the bills but also to find a job that makes
students feel satisfied in their professional
careers.

World Coastal
Clean Up Day

Coral Coast, Fiji, 6 October 2016 More

than 800 kilogrammes of rubbish was
picked up along Cuvu Beach on World
Coastal Clean Up Day this year. A group
of students, who are participants in Shangri-Las Fijian Resort and Spa Heritage in
Young Hands programme, led the charge
with more than 125 volunteers from the
resort and representatives from other
stakeholders including the Nadroga Provincial Council, Sigatoka Town Council,
National Trust for Fiji Islands Sigatoka
Sand Dunes National Park team and family and friends.
The volunteers collected 102 garbage
bags of rubbish from along the popular picnic spot which is located directly
across from Shangri-Las Fijian Resort &
Spa.
The turnout has been overwhelming
and more so as we had key stakeholders
from our community especially our 43
participants from our Heritage in Young
Hands programme that we launched
earlier in the year, said resort Corporate
Social Responsibility manager, Mereoni
Mataika. Ms Mataika said that the participation of the children was part of their ongoing eco activities during the year. We
held two day camps in the last two end
of term school holidays and for each session we enrolled 30 children, Ms Mataika
said. In December we will bring together
both groups who will participate in our
final activities and a dune race using all
the knowledge they have learnt in the last

seven months.
The Heritage in Young Hands is an
environmental education initiative that
was launched in May 2016 by the resort
in partnership with the National Trust for
Fiji Islands Sigatoka Sand Dunes National
Park. Around 60 children have participated in both day camps held during the Fiji
school holidays. The target audience for
the programme were four schools within
the Sigatoka Sand Dunes and Shangri-Las
Fijian Resort and Spa corridor including
Naidovi Primary School, Cuvu District
School, Nadroga Sangam Primary School
and Kulukulu Primary School.
Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels

economy and this contribution has been
increasing each year.
We are confident that in no time the
tourism industry will be a $2 billion industry and the number employed directly
and indirectly in this sector will continue
increasing, Mr Koya said.
He advised students that as people,
who want to join the industry, service
must be at the forefront of their minds
and they must carry that in their employment in the tourism industry.
Our advantage and our greatest asset
is our people, which are the most important component in our service delivery.
And as a service industry, we service
our visitors to the best of our ability our
smiles and friendly nature are worth millions of dollars, he stated.
That happiness factor each Fijian has

what you must carry through at all times
with respect to employment, he said.
Mr Koya noted that through their interactions with people from all over the

other cultures, build tolerance and develop their skills in service delivery.
He was also proud to announce that
his Ministry has a very strong USP alumni,
adding that he was accompanied by six of
them from the Tourism Unit.

Yasawa Joseva Gavidi says Library itself
could transform our kids to becomming
better citizens of Fiji.
Mr Gavidi ecohed this sentiments at the
culmination of the National Library week
at the Civic Centre in Nadi.
Library promotes good values that will
encourage positive behavior in the childrens future, he said.
Mr Gavidi said Libarary can be a majoy
contributor to the behaviour of the kids.
The library contributes to the behavior of our kids and people when we enter
libraries it promotes good values that we
want our kids to promote in their lives.
This is where people are expected
to be silent in the room and take more
knowledge in while reading, also it pro-

motes neatness and you will find that it is

one of the safest places for your children
to be in, he said.
Our kids can transform into teachers,
doctors, engineer and they can become
prime ministers and that is what our library services around the country provide
to our kids, he said.
He urged parents to send their childen
more often to the Library.
The more you send your children to
the library you will find that the behavior
pattern of your child compared to a child
to a child you normally send to an internet
shop which would be noisy and crowded, he added.

The youth of Yalobi village in Yasawa

have started a business with a view of providing goods and services to the people of
Waya Island.
Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon.
Laisenia Tuitubou, last week visited the island and formally handed over a canteen
project to the Vatunareba Youth Club as
part of the Ministrys initiative to support
income generating projects among the
youth across the country.
Such initiatives by the young people
must be recognised and assisted, said
Minister Tuitubou.
This canteen project will directly meet
the needs of Yalobi villagers by bringing
the goods and services that are far away
in Lautoka right to their doorstep.
Minister Tuitubou, while handing over
the canteen, told the youths that you are
also contributing towards the economic
growth of your community and our nation.
Government recognises the need to
stimulate growth of micro-enterprises in
rural and peri-urban areas as they contrib-

ute to the overall economic development

of our nation, said Tuitubou.
He added that youth are effective
agents of economic growth and Government, through the Youth and Sports Ministry, will provide assistance to youth clubs
assessed as having developed sufficiently
to grow further and thus to stimulate the
economy in the village.
Misilame Naqitawa of Vatunareba
Youth Club said: This project brings great
relief to the villagers of Yalobi.
We are grateful to the Ministry for assisting us and this will definitely launch
other income generating projects planned
by the youth, said Naqitawa.
He added that the Ministers presence
at the formal handover had really created
a sense of citizenry amongst young people in the village.
Since we are far from Suva, we are
really grateful and honoured by the Ministers visit today, said Naqitawa. The
youths have pledged to ensure that this
project benefits everyone and that it will
serve its purpose in the community.

Communities assured of
continued assistance
By LUKE NACEI
With the Tropical Winston Assesment
report estimated damages to the Agriculture sector totaling us to $208.6 million Fijian dollar, the Minister for Agriculture Inia
Seruiratu has assured that they will continue to support the Fijian communities in
their rehabilitation process.
This was after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tropical Cyclone
Winston Response and Recovery Project
in Fiji was signed by the Minister for Agriculture Inia Seruiratu and the UN Resident
Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Osnat Lubrani.
Minister Seruiratu thanked UNDP for
the initiative towards the recovery framework and for the partnership that has
enabled the government to deliver these
services to the people not only in humanitarian response but also in the livelihood
recovery throughout Fiji.
We would like to continue the momentum and be consistent with our recovery program regarding food security
in which we are working closely with the
UNDP team, Minister Seruiratu said.
This partnership will ensure that the
affected communities will continue to
receive support in their rehabilitation process and on-going activities will focus on

food security and livelihood restoration,

he said.
Mr Seruiratu also acknowledged UNDP
for the tools provided to the Ministry that
youths in remote areas are putting into
good use and stated that the Ministry will
continue with the recovery efforts.
Vegetable supplies around the country are returning to normalcy while root
crops are still picking up and will normalize in the next few months and we will
continue with the efforts made in the recovery framework.
UNDP Resident representative Osnat
Lubrani said that we are living in an era
where solving one problem helps us to
solve other problems.
Fiji is gearing back to advance and
UNDP alongside other UN Agencies (FAO,
IFAD) are very committed to that, she
said.
Support focus areas are Koro Island, Ba
Province, Saivou and Nakorotubu Districts
in Ra and Northland Tailevu for the Central Division.
The UN support came straight after cyclone Winston and as a response to the
Governments Disaster Recovery Framework Plan for cyclone Winston endorsed
by cabinet on May 25th.

Cancer fundraiser ends

on a high note

Motibhai Group successfully hosted the Bushells Fijis Biggest Morning Tea (BFBMT)
cancer fundraiser at the Suva and Nadi offices last month.
Collectively raising $17,663.20 in the two separate events, the biggest cancer fundraiser in the country which normally gets hosted by various business houses across
the country from August September each year has been extended until the end of
October due to popular demand.
Fiji Cancer Societys acting president Phillip Low while delivering his official address
at the BFBMT event at the Motibhai Group head-offi ce on Wednesday, September 28
said the society has been inundated with requests from various business houses and
in order to accommodate all the requests, the time period for hosting the morning tea

number of Category 4 storms spanning

from 2010 to 2015.
Mr Seruiratu said Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston, which hit the country in
February, 2016, was perhaps the worst
weather anomaly experienced in the entire Pacific region.
We had billions of dollars in terms of
losses and damage and about 30 per cent
of our GDP was taken away just over a
few hours, he said.
Im trying to tell us that this will be the
new norm. Let us accept the fact that this
will be a new norm, therefore attitudes
must change.
Policies must change and we need
some re-engineering processes.
Mr Seruiratu said one of the major
changes made in the Fijian Government a
few years back was shifting from a culture
of reaction to a culture of prevention and
preparedness.
Mr Seruiratu also said there needs to
be greater macroeconomic resilience in
disaster vulnerable countries.
He said disasters often had the most
devastating impact on economies.
If you look at our economic performance, particularly the Small Island Developing States, after every disaster, there
is a significant drop in our economic performance, he said.
Then we pick us so there is a yoyo performance in our economic growth. What
we need is sustained growth and that is
why investment in disaster risk reduction

is so important.
Mr Seruiratu said while such lessons
were learnt the hard way, countries in
the region had to accept the fact that they
were vulnerable and most affected in
times of disasters.
Apart from this, Mr Seruiratu said more
focus needed to be placed on development.
Development is good but unfortunately, in some instances we only focus on the
economic gains out of development.
We neglect environmental issues and
social implications. We need development but let us be aware of the implications hence the way we do things must
change.
I personally have been involved in disaster management in Fiji for quite a few
years now and one of the major observations I made when I came to the disaster
office was the way we treated disaster
and its related activities.
We have had so many disasters over
the past few years but unfortunately, we
waited for the next disaster without doing anything about reports from previous
disasters.
We need to ask: what are the major
lessons learnt, what are the changes that
should be made, who is responsible for
change, what resources are required.
He also said events of the past could
help people prepare better for similar situations in the future.

CCF hosts inaugural

Annual Human Rights
Moot Court Comeptition
By LUKE NACEI
The Citizens Constitutional Forum
(CCF) is proud to host its inaugural Annual Human Rights Moot Court Competition.
The Competition is designed to improve
awareness and interest in human rights
and to train law students to encourage a
dynamic and robust environment in human rights law enforcement and practice
in Fiji.
The Annual Human Rights Moot Court
Competition, which will be held on Friday, 16th September at the Suva High
Court No. 2, is supported by the European
Unions Fiji in Transition towards a Sustainable Democracy in Fiji project implemented by the CCF.
In a statement, CCF Programme Manager, Ken Cokanasiga, says that the moot
court competition will help boost law students interest in the area, creating the demand and market for well-trained human
rights lawyers as the likely consequence
for a healthy and robust human rights law
and practice in Fiji and the Pacific Region.
The EU Ambassador to Fiji and the Pacific, H.E Andrew Jacobs says: The EU
is proud to support the development of
students in human rights. Fiji in Transition project aims to strengthen civil society engagement and partnerships with
institutions, to encourage active citizenship and to advocate for participatory and
representative democracy. Through this

project, the EU aims to facilitate dialogue

between civil society and the government
on civil and political rights.
CCF will host a discussion after the
moot court competition on the theme
Human Rights Law and Practice in Fiji:
Challenges and Opportunities in the Fijian jurisdiction.
Fiji National University third year law
student Leona Panapasa will be participating in the moot court competition for
the first time and she is looking forward
to the competition.
This event will be the first ever moot
court competition that we will participate
in and for us this is good because we see
it as an opportunity to show the people
that FNU does offer law studies and also
has potential students to represent anyone in court or with any legal matter, said
Ms Panapasa.
University of the South Pacifics third
year law student Ziyad Parvez feels that
the competition will better enhance his
understanding on human rights practice
in Fiji.
Apart from trying to gain experience it
would be interesting to see how international conventions and constitutional provisions are applied before the court and
how those limitations actually prohibit the
application of human rights laws, said
Mr. Parvez.

fundraiser has been extended.

We wish to convey our heart-felt appreciation to everyone who attended the Bushells Fijis Biggest Morning Tea at our head-office and Suva office respectively and donated generously towards a noble cause, Motibhai Group executive director Bhupendra
Patel said.
For those who could not make it this year due to busy schedules and prior commitments, we look forward to your presence and support next year,
Mr Patel added: Having said this, we look forward to everyones continued support
in future to battle cancer and raise awareness at the same time.

Significant progress made in Tobacco control

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has announced significant progress
in tobacco control as part of efforts to promote healthy living and wellbeing.
The Ministrys acting permanent secretary, Dr Josefa Koroivueta made the comments at the opening of the Multi-sectoral
Workshop for Pacific Island Countries and
Workshop on Tobacco Free Pacific 2025 in
Nadi.
Fiji became the first Pacific country to
sign the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade
in Tobacco Products in 2013 and the
Government continues to strengthen the
implementation of the World Health Organisation Framework on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in all countries as appropriate via the Tobacco Control Decree
2010 and the Tobacco Control Regulations
2012.
Fiji has made significant progress in
tobacco control efforts over the past few
years including the development of laws
and policies and enforcement mechanisms, Dr Koroivueta said.
We also have a very competent national Tobacco Control Enforcement Unit
which is tasked with continuous monitoring, surveillance and prosecution of of-

fenders contravening the tobacco control

legislations in Fiji.
Cabinet has also endorsed the ratification of the Protocol and Fiji is in the final
stages of the ratification process.
Dr Koroivueta stated that Fijis work
was further strengthened following the
Yanuca Island Declaration on health,
which was signed during the 11th Pacific
Health Ministers Meeting in April, last year.
One of the proposed recommendations from the working group is to reduce
avoidable disease burden and premature
death. Consequently, tobacco use is the
deadliest preventable cause of disease
burden and premature death in the world.
One of the proposed future directions
of the Declaration recommends to undertake multi-sectoral action and health in
all policies approach and one of the examples used was the increasing taxes on
tobacco which helps to reduce demand
for tobacco, Dr Koroivueta said.
He also stressed that a multi-sectoral
approach is important to ensure that the
Pacific voice is heard in global conversations so that our specific concerns are addressed.

Fiji Sevens Olympic Gold medalist Jasa
Veremalua has a passion for little kids and
especially those that are disabled.
And by doing so he has inspired students
with disabilities that participated in the McDonalds Westcose Sports and Fun Day in
Nadi to utilise their talents.
Veremalua said when they utilise their
god given talents they will become successful in life.
I would like to challenge you this afternoon never to allow my circumstances to
hinder you to achieve your dream and your
goal, he said.
Just look at your own assistant Minister
for Youth and Sports Iliesa Delana is a very
good example he achieved a gold medal in
the 2012 Para Olympics Games. If he can do
that you can also do the same.
Showing his respect and how much he
felt for the kids, Jasa cancelled his first fitness training that he was schedule to attend
at the HPU Gym at Lawaqa Park.
We were supposed to go for the fitness
in Sigatoka for us western people but then I
was invited to this event for the kids. I would
like to thank you all for inviting me to be part
of this special occasion, he said.
While officiating at the event Veremalua
highlighted to the students their success at
the Rio Olympics.
For the past three years the boys together with the management worked towards
the aim in winning the Gold at the Olympics.
Sacrifice, hardworking, commitment, abiding to the instructions and spiritual guidance
having faith in God Almighty boosted our
lives, he said.
The Korotogo, Nadroga lad also told the
students to work towards achieving their targeted goals.
Without making you aim you cannot
work towards you dream. Without hard
work you cannot achieve your dream, you
got to work hard in order to achieve your
dream, you got to listen to your parents and
teachers.
Children you must learn to respect so
that you will also be respected by others,
he added.

Mr Joseva Gavidi from the Ministry of

Education said: This is a great platform for
you students to meet Jasa Veremalua our
Rio Olympics gold medal winning player.
I must acknowledge the kind sponsor
McDonalds though your financial support
we have been able to bring together the
Western Special Schools here year in and
year out, he said.
From the Ministry we have always
placed a lot of emphasis on special education and through this organisation we are going to still commit and place more emphasis
on special education so that you kids from
our special schools will achieve more and
become successful in life be it sports or academic work in whatever field that you become successful in.
I believe the Ministry of Education will
always be behind you 100 percent to ensure
that you achieve those life time dreams and
goals and today it is always a pleasure and
an honour to be with you this afternoon.
McDonalds Fiji Marketing and People Development manager Verenaisi Wong said
they were happy to support the Westcose
games for another year.
This is the annual event that McDonald
has been sponsoring with the Western special school for the last plus years. McDonalds as a company is looking forward to
supporting the wider communities we have
been looking at all the disable schools and
we will continue to do so in the future, she
said.
The vision is that together we make a
difference for the special kids they dont
have to have disability to be part of anything.
My message to the kids out there is that
you can come in and be part of this wide
community and I think that the large community should also think of them as well,
she added.
Participating schools were Ba School
for Special Education, Sigatoka School for
Special Education, Rakiraki School for Special Education, Lautoka Sunshine Special
School, Lautoka School for Special Education and Nadi School for Special Education.

Pacific Islands project

takes out top gong
Pacific Islands project takes out top
gong
An aid project delivered in Tuvalu
by Australian-owned dredging and civil
construction company Hall Pacific in
conjunction with New Zealands Calibre
Consulting has taken out a prestigious
Gold Award as part of the 2016 Innovate
Awards of Excellence held in New Zealand in September.
The awards recognise excellence in
engineering and consulting and saw the
project undertaken on the Funafuti atoll
in the Pacific Island nation of Tuvalu defeat three other finalists for the coveted
top spot.
Hall Pacific Managing Director Cameron Hall said the project had involved more
than 250,000m3 of sand being dredged
from a local lagoon and used to fill manmade pits in the porous coral atoll.
The pits were remnants from the second world war, where the United States
Marine Corps dug up areas of the Funafuti
atoll for use in building an airstrip. The resulting excavations known as borrow
pits were uninhabitable, and collected
rubbish as well as human and pig waste,
Mr Hall said.
Aside from posing sanitation issues,
this also polluted the lagoon, causing
excessive disruption to the local ecosystem.
Mr Hall said filling in the borrow pits
had minimised pollution and improved
hygiene levels on the atoll, while also creating more open space to be used by the
community.
Given Tuvalu is very densely populated, land space is very valuable to the

Tuvaluan people, so the local community

was thrilled to see useable land space in
the area increased by more than six per
cent as part of the works.
Our team spent more than six months
working on the $7 million aid project, and
we deployed a cutter suction dredge, 180foot accommodation barge and support
equipment such as excavators, dozers
and trucks from Australia to international
waters as part of the project.
Mr Hall said in addition to the Borrow
Pit Remediation Project, the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
(MFAT) had also commissioned the repair
of a breach in the storm ridge at the northern part of the atoll.
As one of the worlds lowest-lying nations, Tuvalu is particularly vulnerable to
rising sea levels, severe storm systems
and coastal erosion caused by climate
change, Mr Hall said.
Our team constructed a sandbag wall
that effectively repaired the breach and
removed the threat of the atoll splitting
in two. These works were completed as
part of the overall contract and were recognised in the award win.
Hall Pacific is an Australian-owned and
operated company servicing the Pacific
Islands that specialises in climate change
adaptation and resilience including land
reclamation, coastal protection, flood
mitigation dredging and infrastructure delivery.
The company has just completed the
design and construction of a seawall on
Tuvalus Nukufetau atoll, further protecting Tuvaluan locals from the impacts of
climate change.

Jarryd Hayne expecting first child

Gold Coast Titans NRL star Jarryd Hayne is

expecting his first child with a friend he had
known for just weeks.
The code hopping superstar, 28, was said to
have been left stunned after Amellia Bonnici,
25, who he met via Instagram early this year, announced she was pregnant and expecting child
at the end of the year.
Friends say the devout Christian, who joined
the Hillsong Church in 2008, has now moved the
Italian-born beauty into his Gold Coast apartment and promises to support her.
She was said to have been nervous about
telling him because they were not officially dating and he was living in America at the time, according to New Idea magazine.
CEO of the Titans Graham Annesley confirmed the Western Sydney born athlete was
expecting to become a father with Miss Bonnici
but refused to provide further details.
We never comment on players private
lives, he said.
The magazine claims the former NRL star,
who quit Australia to chase his Olympic dream

in the US with the Fiji Rugby Sevens, met Miss

Bonnici while visiting Australia in February after
months of pursuing his career abroad.
Despite the initial shock of learning he would
become a father, the sporting legend is said to
have welcomed the news and told Miss Bonnici
he would support the pregnancy.
Hayne ditched the Parramatta Eels to play
with the San Francisco 49ers last year, only to
quit and failing to make the Fiji Rugby Sevens
gold medal winning Olympic side.
Last month he rejoined the NRL signing a
$1.2 million a season deal with the Titans.
Friends close to the sportsman, who was
raised single-handedly by his mother Jodie, said
he relocated back to Australia so that he could
build on his new relationship.
Hayne is the son of former Fijian and Rabbitohs star Manoa Thompson.
He grew up between Minto and Airds near
Campbelltown where he lived in a housing
commission residence and was raised by Jodie
and grandmother Robin while his father chased
a career overseas.

Fiji International Fiji Para Olympian

up another level challenges disable
By LUKE NACEI
The Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says golf in the country has been a
success for the past three years.
The PM made this remarks while officiating at the opening of the 2016 Fiji International Golf at the Intercontinental Fiji
Golf Resort and Spa at Natadola.
It is my sincere pleasure to be here
with you all to officially launch the 2016
Fiji International, he said.
In 2013, when Fiji first had the privilege of hosting this tournament, I was not
a golfer, nor had I had much experience
with the game at all, aside from following
the impressive career of our own Vijay
Singh.
This year we have taken the Fiji International to a new level through our partnership with the European Tour.
Ladies and gentlemen three years
later I still dont golf. But as someone
who has always been an avid sports fan, I
have marveled at the athletic prowess of
the very talented professionals that have
come to Fiji and wowed us year after year.
I have also watched, with great pride,
how this tournament has continued to
rise in prestige and attract wider international appeal.
The PM said the tournament will
broadcast to 450 million homes located
on every continent which will reach many
people, in different countries, who may
not even have heard of Fiji.
Bainimarama commended Fijian International and all the participating golfers for making it to this years Golf tournament.
Vijay Singh is also here, and we have
had the pleasure of hosting Vijay for all
three years of the tournament. Vijay,
thank you for always being such a proud

ambassador of Fiji, and as always, its

great to have you.
Steve Jeffress, our inaugural winner,
is also back for a third year. Were very
proud youve joined us again, Steve, and
I cant wait to see you in action.
I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful ambience here at the Intercontinental and are looking forward to playing on
our premier course here in Natadola. But
I must tell you, while this venue and the
course are both incredibly beautiful they
are only a taste of what Fiji has to offer.
I know that some of our competitors
are here with their families and that is
wonderful to see. We are a world-famous
family destination, so Im glad that in the
midst of the demanding international circuit youve found some time to enjoy the
Fijian experience with your loved ones.
And for our other competitors, I hope
thats an experience youll share with
your own families when we next see you
again.
As Im sure those who have been
with us the past three years can testify,
golf in Fiji has come a very long way. Our
partnership with PGA Australia has done
wonders in getting more Fijians interested in the game, and in preparing our tourism industry to better cater for casual and
professional golfing competition.
To all of you players, officials, sponsors and spectators welcome again to
Fiji on behalf of the Fijian Government
and the Fijian people were delighted to
have you here at Natadola. I hope you enjoy the experience and also provide some
great golf for the vast television audience
watching around the world The Prime
Minister added.

By LUKE NACEI

Just days after representing Fiji in table tennis at the Rio Paralympics, Mere
Roden was back in action on home soil
giving playing tips to disabled children
and their parents at the Nausori Special
School Table Tennis Fun Day.
Organized by the Pacific Sports Partnerships Smash Down Barriers program,
the aim of the event was to raise awareness of the potential of disabled children
in sport and other areas of life, and to promote the message to parents to encourage their children to strive for success.
Spinal Injury Association of Fiji (SIA)
President Mere, along with SIA Executive
Director Joshko Wakaniyasi, were guests
of honour at the event and both had warm
words to say about the initiative, followed
by a masterclass in table tennis by Mere
and fun training sessions for children and
parents alike, by table tennis professionals.
Mere who herself was encouraged to
try table tennis just two years ago through
the Smash Down Barriers program addressed parents and children at the event
with an inspirational speech.
In a statement Mere said: Some of us
just look at our disability and think I cant
do that but you can, At the Paralympics
there was an Egyptian table tennis player
with no arms who played with the bat in
his mouth. You have to have that hope;
that belief. Nothing is impossible believe

President Blesses Team

By LUKE NACEI
Presidet Jioji Konrote has given the

itatau to him at Government House.
The 30 players were congratulated for
being selected to travel to New Zealand
for a Tri-nations Test series against Australia and New Zealand schoolboys President Konrote reminded the players of the
importance of the tour.
You will now go and represent our
beloved country. Our prayers and good
wishes come with you, and on the outset, I just want to thank you for following
our traditional protocol by coming here
to present your itatau. This is unique because of the way we do things.

Youre representing your family, your

schools and most importantly, your beloved nation Fiji, Konrote said.
Mr President informed the players together with the team management that
prayers and blessing would follow them
when they leave Fiji.

that they would do every Fijian proud.

win in Rio and I have no doubt you will

in yourself, she said.

Mere also thanked the Fiji Table Tennis
Association represented at the event by
President Anthony Ho and Vice-President
Naren Lal for their support.
Joshko Wakaniyasi said: Fiji is a sporting nation, as the Fiji 7s has proved. And
table tennis as a sport is unique in that
children with disabilities or abled-bodied
children can play. In fact, anyone can play
you can never be too young or too old or
too disabled; there is even a blind version
of the game.
This means that you the parents can
play with your children in this sport and
encourage them to grow in confidence
and realize they can achieve in any area
of life with your support.
I take my hat off for the great work that
the FTTA do. The reward for us, the SIA,
in working with the FTTA is the smiles on
the childrens faces and the appreciation
of their parents, he said.
Nausori Head Teacher, Narend Prasad,
was also delighted at the opportunity to
host the event.
I hope this will be a very proud moment for you to participate in this event
with your children. Lets work hand in
hand in giving opportunities to our children to become better in sports, enjoy,
socialize and make friends, be healthy, do
better in school work and become better
leaders of tomorrow, he said.

Prince Charles Park in Nadi. Photo: LUKE NACEI.

Krishneel Krishneet of Suva has high

hopes of donning the white jumper one
day.
Krishneet was amongst the Dee Cees
Nadera Panthers Under 14 team that defeated Saru Dragons 4-0 in the Fiji National Rugby League finals competition that
was played at the Prince Charles Park in
Nadi.
The 13 year old has a passion for rugby
league and wishes to one day make his
parents proud by representing the Fijian
Team.
Krishneet who showed great rugby

skills during the finals defied all odds saying that rugby is a sport and can be played
buy anyone.
He said he is the first in his family to
take up this sport.
The game was good and I liked it. The
competition was pretty tough but it was
good enough for me, he said.
I have been playing rugby league and
this is my second time to play for Nadera
Panthers.
I wish to continue this in future and
one day represent the Fiji Bati team one
day. I am the first one in my family member to play rugby league.
Krishneel said it was the support from
his family that had always My parents
were always very supportive to me in
training and I would like to dedicate this
win to them.
I would like to encourage my fellow
friends who think they cannot play rugby
league to take up this spot it.
Team Manager Tevita Korosaya said
Krishneel involvement in the sport should
be a motivation to others.
You can see we are heading to the
right direction in terms of development of
rugby league development in Fiji.
He said the Under 14 grade are paving
a way forward in their rugby career.
We aim to make waves in the Tier
Four grade and by doing so this is the
place we need to start from, to groom the
local talents from the junior grades.
Nadera Panthers we have been open
to our indo Fijians brothers and we have
a role in Nadera Panthers. We dont close
the door to anyone regardless the gender
or the race.
To have Krishneel is great. To our Fijian brothers of Indian descendants we
have a future for them in rugby league
and having Krishneel shows that it can be
done, he said.

Noosa 7s Title

Fiji-based side Tabadamu claimed the

Noosa International Sevens title in convincing fashion on Sunday October 9.
The Tony Loloma-coached side toppled UQ Rugby 33-5 in the decider at Sunshine Beach, after two days of action, featuring 16 teams.
The victory was especially sweet given
the side lost last years grand final to a
New Zealand Development Team.
Weve been training hard in Fiji for a
couple of months, Loloma said.
We were really blessed to be on the
Sunshine Coast and to play at Noosa.
We were trying our best to win this
tournament...Im really happy for the
boys, (and with) their attitude.
He said the experience of last year
helped them this time around.
A few of our boys were here last year
and thats why we won this time, because
we knew a lot (of what to expect), he
said.
The team, which is now bound for
games in Byron Bay and the Central Coast,
cruised through its three pool games on
Saturday before beating Sunnybank 1914, Newtown 24-10 and UQ Rugby in fi-

nals on Sunday.
In the eight-team womens competition, Iconz defeated Nations 24-10 in the
decider despite dropping its first game of
the tournament.
In the under-18 boys section, UQ Rugby
beat Brisbane Fijians 47-5 in the final and
in the under-18 girls division, Tribe beat
Melbourne Rising 53-0.
Among the teams to impress was another Fijian outfit, Newtown.
The David Hesaie-coached unit won its
three Pool C matches in impressive fashion, knocking over Sunnybank 26-0, Active Life Rehab 19-12 and host Noosa Dolphins 43-0 but it was ultimately toppled by
Tabadamu 24-10 in the semi-finals.
The side played with plenty of flair after
being inspired by the Fijian national side,
which won the mens sevens at the Rio
Olympics.
Were trying to keep that (attacking)
brand up, coach David Hesai said.
The Noosa Dolphins fielded mens and
under-18 teams but they failed to make an
significant impact.
Sunshine Coast Grammar reached the
semi-finals of the under-18 boys section.

By LUKE NACEI
Newcomer Ravoravo Rabbitohs were
crowned winners of the Vodafone Cup
Reserve Grade stamping their mark as a
force to reckon in the future.
This came after their victorious campaign against the high flying KBL Saru
Dragons 16-10 to win the Vodafone Cup

Reserve Grade which was played at the

Prince Charles Park in Nadi.
It was a hard hitting game between the
two where the team from the Sugar City
gave the Rabbitohs a good run for their
money.
Team manager Sitiveni Vuniyayawa
said the win has painted a bright future
for the group.
Throughout the elimination and as
well the finals the boys always stood out
for each other. This is the team I love because there is so many players that are
just learning to play rugby league, he
said.
We are just a new team this year but
the boys were able to scrap through the
game and win the competition.
The club is a breakaway from the former champions the Sabeto Roosters who
fell short in the Fiji National Rugby League
grand finals against Police Sharks in the
quarterfinals.

24 THE JET - FIJIS FIRST COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER

Vuniyayawa said the boys will take a

few weeks break before the get back into
business.
The boys need some break because
we have plans in the pipe line but for the
time being we will just take the win and
enjoy it and we believe that in the future
we will be a competitive team, he said.
I am thankful that even with the structures that we had we came to the elimination and the quarterfinals our team all
went through its a new team but I believed in my heart that the management
and all the structure that we had put in
place worked and we had reap the benefit today.
He thanked all those that were behind
the success of the team.
I would like to thank each and every
player that had participated today. We
have noticed that our supporters have
really grown and that is a good sign for
us because without our supporters we

wouldnt have made it this far and for that

I thank everyone who is present here today and for making it here is a great boost
to the team, he said.
The Rabbitohs Under 18 team was supposed to feature in the finals but was rules
out because of some technical issues.
We were supposed to play two teams
today in the final but just for some technicality our Under 18 couldnt play.
Coastline Roos replaced the Rabbitohs
in the final which was won by the Eels.
Meanwhile, in the Premier Division
Police Sharks defeated Burenitu 18-10 to
win the main cup challenge in the Premier Division. In the Under 14 grade Dee
Cees Nadera Panthers won 4-0 over Saru
Dragons. West Storm then again defeated
Saru Dragons 12-4 in the Under 16 grade
while Nadi Eels edged the Coastline Roos
to a 14-12 score.
