WelcometoourenvironmentallyfriendlyAugustSeptember2013onlineissueofThe Magazine.

ThesequesteredNorthAmericanairshowseasonisnowwhollyunderway,withmuchdropinattendance
attheshowsthatdecidedtohaveoneregardless.Airshowsthatusedtodrawupto200,000onaweekend
nowbarelycanget20,000peoplein,thankstothelackofUSMilitaryparticipation.

Theweatherisalsoaculprit,withmorerainontheeastcoastoftheUSAandeasternCanada,fewerpeo
plearewillingtotakeachanceongoingtotheairshowsincaseitrains.FromourEuropeancorrespon
dentswelearnedthatthewetweatherwasnotjustexclusivetoNorthAmerica,itrainedtheretooatsev
eralmajorairshows.

ASRhasbeenatseveralshowssofarthisyearwhichhavebeenaffecteddramaticallybythesequestration
andtheweather.Andspeakingofdrama,therehavebeencoupleofdramaticaccidentsresultingintheloss
ofperformer'slives.AttheVectrenDaytonAirShow,wingwalkerJaneWickerandherpilotCharlieSchwen
kerlosttheirliveswhileperformingalowlevelroutineinwhichJanehangsupsidedownfromawingasthe
plane tilts. The pilot lost control and the biplane Aurora then slammed into the ground and exploded as
spectators,includingmanychildren,screamedinhorror.Thankfully,nospectatorswerehurt.

AttheQuadCityAirShowattheDavenportMunicipalAirportinDavenport,Iowa,JohnKlattwasforcedto
landhisMXAircraftMXSafterheexperiencedanenginemalfunction,whichsprayedoilalloverthecanopy
forcinghimtopurposefullyejectthecanopysohecouldactuallyseetherunwayandmakeanemergency
landing.Johnwasluckytowalkawaywithsomelacerationsandminorburnsbutrefusedtogotothehos
pital.WeshouldcommendJohnforhisskillandcomposuretolandsafelyinthefaceofacatastrophicen
ginefailureandavoidinganyinjuriestothespectators.WewishJohnaspeedyrecoveryandlookforward
toseeinghimatairshowssoon.

Coincidentally,onlyafewweekspriortoJaneWicker'stragicaccidentweflewinherplaneAurora,anda
fewweekspriortoJohnKlatt'sincidentweflewinaphotoplanealonghisside.Readourreportsandsee

Letsfaceit.Ifyouarereadingthis,youaremostlikelyanaviationenthusiast.Italsostandstoreasonthat,
likeme,youhavevariousaviationrelatedcollectibles.Forinstance,Iknowsomeonewhohasover100scale
modelaircraft(okay,itsme),dozensofhistoricaviationbooks(again,me)andscoresofchallengecoinsfrom
squadronsallovertheUnitedStates(yes,thatwouldbeme).ButFantasyofFlightownerKermitWeekshas
takenthewordsaviationcollectiontoawholedifferentlevel.Heownstheworldslargestcollectionofpri
vatelyownedaircraftspanningtheerasfromearlyflight,throughbothWorldWarsandbeyond.Anyvisitto
hismuseumisanawesomeexperiencethatwillfillvisitorswithwonder,andyes,atingeofjealousy.

LocatedinPolkCity,Floridathemuseumisa30minutedrivefromOrlandoandislocatedonasprawlingair
portownedbyMr.Weeks.Ithastwograssrunwaysalongwiththreelargehangars,restorationspaces,im
mersivedisplaysandevenaseaplaneramp.WhileFantasyofFlightiscertainlyamuseum,itismuchmore
thanthat.Whilethewordmuseumconnotesoldaircraftinfixeddisplays,thevastmajorityoftheFantasyof
Flightscollectionisairworthy.Themuseumoffersdailyaerialdemonstrationsoftheaircraftinitscollec
tion,sometimesflownbyMr.Weekshimself.Morethanamuseum,itisalivingexperience.

KermitWeeksfascinationwithaviationbeganearlyinlifeandhebuilthisownplaneatage17.By
age24hehadqualifiedfortheUSAerobaticsTeamandwontheUSNationalAerobaticsChampi
onshiptwice.Thankstoagenerousfamilyinheritance,Mr.Weekswasabletobeginacquiring
vintageaircraftleadingtothecreationofFantasyofFlight.Mr.Weekshassaidthathehasgrand
plansforthefacilityandaspirestoturnFantasyofFlightintoaDisneyesqueaviationthemepark.

TheFantasyofFlightcollectionismassive.Thehangarsarefilledwithpristinehistoricallysignificant
aircraftmadeallthemorefascinatingsincetheyareairworthy.Whilethecollectionistooextensive

Wildcatandtaxiedtothegrassrunway.Visitorsweretheninvitedtomoveouttothesideoftherunwayfora
closerlook.TheWildcatleaptintotheairandmadeseveralthrillinglowpassesdemonstratingtheclassicair
craftscapabilities.Mr.Weekswasavailableaftertheflighttoansweranyquestionsandchatwiththevisi
tors.

EverytwoyearstheLangkawiInternationalMaritimeandAerospaceExhibition(LIMA)isheld
inMalaysiaandisoneofAsia'smostprestigiousaerospace,maritime,commercialanddefense
events.LIMAwasfirstheldin1991,whileitishostedmostlyasatradeshow,thereisalsoa
twodayairshowforthegeneralpublic.

TheweatherisusuallyveryniceatthisoftheyearinMalaysia,idealforsuchevents.Thisyearitwas
quitehotwithhighhumidity.Oneneededlotsoffluidreplenishmentinordertohydrateproperlyasit
waseasytogetheatexhaustion.Agoodsunblockwashelpfultoo,toavoidanyburns.Oneofthema
joradvantagesofthisshowistheaccesstotheaircraft,andthecloseaccesstotherun
way.Duringtheshowmanyspectatorsassembledunderthelargeraircraft,suchasthe
KC10,forsunshade.

Theaerialdisplayswereverygoodwithatotalof30aircraft,includingtheworldfamousRussianKnightsintheirSu27s.Otherparticipants
includedthe1MALAYSIAAEROBATICTEAMintheirExtra300L,MiG29NfromtheRMAF,TyphoonfromtheRAF,theDassaultRafalefromAr
medel'Air,USAwasrepresentedbytheC17andtheF/A18F.Therewereextensivestaticdisplaysthatincluded48aircraftfromtheRoyal
MalaysianAirForceandtheRoyalMalaysianNavy,RoyalThaiAirForce,RoyalAustralianAirForce,RepublicofSingaporeAirForce,andthe
USANavyamongthem.Ifonewasboredlookingattheaircraft,onecouldvisitalargenumberofwarshipsnearbyfromseveralcountries.

Inconclusion,itisaverygoodshowtoattend,ifyouareinthearea.

FighterDay(April22),whichwascelebratedwithagreatmeetattendedby11operationalsquadronsofFAB.

OnMonday,the22nd,thedaystartedwithsomeblueskies,heavycloudsandoccasionallightrain.Sincethe
weatherremainedsoformuchofthetimeaircraftlikeMirageF2000,F5EM,A1,A29SuperTucanoand
attackhelicopterAH2Sabre(MilMi24)wereabletofly.

The meet started with the traditional P47 Thunderbolt ceremony, attended by the Minister of Defense,
CelsoAmorim,andtheCommanderoftheAirForceLieutenantBrigadierJunitiSaito.Theeventtookplacein
frontofawartimeP47mountedonastand,withawelcomespeech,arollcalltofallenBrazilianpilotsinthe
SecondWorldWar,andtheexecutionoftheFighterAviationhymnandthenationalanthem,withflybysby
twoF5EM(4864and4837)ofthe1stGAVCA(1stFighterAviationGroup).

Next,thepublicmovedontothewestramp,foratributeamilitaryparade,withpassesbyamixedforma
tionoftwoMirageF2000C(4948and4949)ofthe1GDA(1stAirDefenceGroup)andtwoF5EM(4839
and4862)of1/14GAV(1stSquadronofthe14thAviationGroup).Thatwasfollowedbythepresentation
oftheBrigadeiroNeroMouraMedaltooutstandingfighterpilotsyoungandold.Thisyearshostisthe1
GAVCAthatwascreated70yearsagoinDecember.

InthehugeZeppelinhangar,anF5EMofthe1stGAVCAandamodernizedA1M(5526)withvariousweap
onswereondisplay.NexttotheF5EM,therewasaMectronMAA1Piranhaairairmissilecutaway,showing
itsinternalconfiguration.Afewtransportplaneswerealsoseenatthebase,includingsomeC99s,aC105A
andanH34helicopter.

April22,1945isrememberedasthedatewhenthepilotsoftheFirstGroupofFighterAviationperformed
thelargestnumberofmissionsinWorldWarII.Aswecelebratethisdate,wepreservethememoryofthose
whorepresentedthecountry68yearsagointheskiesofItaly,theCommanderoftheThirdAirForce(III
FAE), Air Brigadier Luiz Fernando Aguiar explained. The III FAE is responsible for the Brazilian Air Forces
fighterandreconnaissanceunits.

Guestsandmediaweretakentothestandtoviewanoperationaldemonstration,featuringseveralFABair
craft.

Openingthedisplay,theA29SuperTucanosdroppedtheir500lbsbombswiththeusualuncannyaccuracy,
thankstoitsadvancedavionics.NextcamethelongawaitedpresentationofAH2Sabre,from2/8GAVII
FAE (Second Air Force), with cannon fire, launching flaresand rockets. The A1 and F5EM demonstration
was cancelled due to heavy cloud cover over the targets, causing the aircraft to land carrying all of their
weapons.

ThedayendedwithacocktailpartyforguestsattheOfficersLounge.TheMeetingofFighterAviationisalso
consideredatimetocelebrateallofthefighterairforceunitsthroughoutthecountry.Tohonourthisevent,
pilotswearthescarfoftheSecondSquadronoftheFifthAviationGroup(2/5GAV),theJokerSquadron,
whichtrainsfuturefighterpilotsfortheBrazilianAirForce.

InApril2013,LeeuwardenAirBasewasonceagainhostingtheinternationalexerciseFrisianFlag.Fortwo
weeks,aircraftfromvariouscountrieshadpractisingtheirskillsatairdefencemissionsaswellasairstrikes
againstgroundtargets.FrisianFlag2013isheavilyfocusedoninternationalcooperation.Apartfromtheair
forcesfromthevariousparticipatingnations,thiswasanexerciseincooperationbetweenthevarioustactical
aircommandsandtacticalaircontrolagencies.TheorganisationofFrisianFlagistheresponsibilityofthe323
SqnTACTES(TacticalTraining,EvaluationandStandardisation)atLeeuwardenAirBase.

About55aircraftwereattheflightlineofLeeuwardenAirBase,withsortiesbeingflowntwiceadaywithap
proximately40aircraft.ParticipantswereDutchF16MLUfromthetwoAirBasesofLeeuwardenandVolkel,
BelgianF16MLU,GermanEF2000,F16C52fromPoland, JAS39CGripenfromSweden,MirageF1CRand
Mirage 2000C from France. Dutch KDC10s and GAF A 310 MRTT were taking part as tanker aircraft and
AWACSunitsfromtheNATOasflyingradarplatforms.

The missions flown during Frisian Flag 2013 included air defence missions, offensive missions, missions to
protectotheraircraft(airtransport,AWACSorotheraircraftthatdonothaveselfprotectionequipment)and
theeliminationofstaticanddynamictargetsonthegroundoratsea.

SeanD.TuckerreturnedtoChinoforhisinauguralshowoftheseason,puttingonadisplaywhichhastobe
seentobebelieved.HeopenedtheSkyDancewithalongseriesofsnaprollsonthedownline,pullingup
seeminglyatthelastminuteandfollowedthatwithanamazingseriesofaerobaticroutines.Evenwhenhe
performsstandardmaneuvers,suchastheHammerhead,hebumpsitupbyperformingaDoubleHammer
head.HeendedhisthirteenminuteshowwiththeTripleRibbonCut,rollingthebrightredOracleChallenger
IIIbiplanefromrightknifeedgetoleftknifeedgetoinvertedflighttocutthreeribbonsinrapidsuccession.
Allthisatover200mphandbarely25feetofftheground!Awelcomerespitefromthehighenergyandraw
powerofSeansdemonstrationwasprovidedbythegracefulflightoftheonlyremainingN9MFlyingWing.

TheEuropeanTheaterFlightfeaturedalargenumberofP51DMustangs,P40NWarhawk,P47GThunder
bolt,P63Kingcobra,SpitfireMkXIV,andanewbuildFW190.Theaircraftmademanypasses,flyingbyin
everchangingorderandpairingsandoftensolowtheywereobscuredbytheparkedaircraftinfrontofthe
flightline. Dennis Sanders then put on a very spirited flying demonstration in his Sea Fury, creating great
smoke rings in the sky as the heavies took to the stage. Three B25J Mitchellsand three C47 Skytrains
representedthebombersandcargoplanesoftheSecondWorldWar,flyinganumberofcircuits,including
several low passes.. (The EAAs B17 Aluminum Overcast flew in the morning and afternoon, but was not
partoftheairshow.)

ThenitwastimefortheLightningStrike:P38FGlacierGirl,P38J23Skidoo,P38LHoneyBunny,P38L
ThoughtsofMidnite,andP38LTangerinetooktotheskiesoverChino.Afterformingupandmakinga
grouppassoverthecrowd,theindividualLightningsmademanyhighspeed,lowaltitudepasses,banking
hardtoprovidethemassesofphotographersbeautifultopsideshots.SteveHintonendedthesessionwith
asolodemonstrationoftheP38saerobaticcapabilitiesinGlacierGirl.AHeritageFlightwasflownearlier
inthedaybyapairofLightnings,but,forthesecondyearinarow,withoutacurrentUSAFfighter.

ClayLacyputonasmoothdemonstrationoftheLearjetsaerobaticcapabilitiesandJohnCollverfinishedout
thedaysflyingwithhisaerobaticroutineflyingtheAT6TexanWarDog.

The impressive lineup attracted another record crowd estimated around 35,000. The intimate venue, al
mostconstantflying,andwidevarietyofaircraftmakethisairshowaphotographersdream.A300mmlens
issufficienttocapturethefighters,butazoomlens,orsecondbodywithashorterlens,willbenecessaryto
catchthelargeraircraftandalloftheactiononthetaxiwayandhotramp.Shootingintothesuncanbean
issue,butluckilytheSantaAnawindsclearedouttheSoCalhazethisyear.ASRMediawouldliketothank
JerryWilkinsandHarryGeierforarrangingthemediaaccessandtothemanypilots,sponsors,staffandvol
unteerswhomadethisairshowsuchasuccess.

The

LightningStrikesChino!wasthethemeforthe2013PlanesofFameMuseumsairshow,whichfeatured
five of the seven flying P38s in the world. Over 40 warbirds in the air with many more on static display
(includingseveralrareoruniqueaircraft),greataerobaticperformers,andnumerousveteranssharingtheir
wartimeexperiencescombinedonceagaintomakethisoneofthebestairshowsinNorthAmerica.

Theoverallschedulefortheairshowisroughlythesamefromyeartoyear,featuringWWII Pacific,WWII
EuropeanandKoreanairwardemonstrations,civilianaerobaticdisplays,andaflyingperformancehighlight
ingthespecificyearstheme.However,themixofindividualaircraftchangesconstantly.Theonethingwhich
neverchangesisthelargenumberandvarietyofaircraftandthealmostconstantflying,bothinformations
andindividualflybys.

40CWarhawkandF86Sabre.TheSilverWingsWingwalkingteam,withLeeOlmanatthecontrolsofthesil
ver Stearman and Margaret Stivers moving about the aircraft, amazed the crowd. Rob Harrison, the
TumblingBear,putonabeautifulaerobaticperformanceinhisZlin50aircraft.ThenitwastimeforthePa
cificTheaterFlighttobegin.TheskieswerefilledwithF4UCorsairs,J2FDuck,F3F,F4FWildcat,SBDDaunt
less,F8FBearcat,TBMAvengersandabeautifullyrestoredandbrightlycoloredPBYCatalina.AnA6MZeke/
ZeroandD3A1ValrepresentedtheJapaneseforces.Theaircraftmademultiplepasses,bothingroupsand
singly,beforeturningtoland.

Ashortintermissionprovidedattendeesachancetocatchtheirbreathandgrababitetoeatorsomethingto
drinkatoneofthefoodboothsorbeerstands.Priceswerereasonable,theselectionwasvariedandtables
and chairs were provided in the food court. There were plenty of portable toilets distributed over the
grounds.Adedicatedkidsareawasalsoprovided.

TheKoreanAirWarflightbeganwithanAT6Texancallinginanairstriketocoveranadvancinginfantryunit.
A Skyraider and Corsair, laden with bombs and rockets, soon appeared and per
formedanumberoflowaltitudestrafingandbombingruns,withtopcoverbeing
provided by a Bearcat, Sea Fury, and a pair of Mustangs. A MiG15 soon threat
enedthem,whichcausedtwoT33ShootingStarsandanF86Sabretobescram
bled.Adogfightbetweenthejetssoonensued,endingwiththeMiGtrailingsmoke
asitexitedthearea.

withdraw any participation this year at public events due to budget cuts. The effects of these draconian

tion.Whiletheaerobaticsandflybysarenotvisiblefromtheairport,spectaculartakeoffsandlandingsare
onlyafewyardsaway.Inaddition,whentheyaren'tpreppingfortheirperformances,theairshowaircraft
aregenerallyavailableforanupcloseandpersonallook.

AfterSaturday'swashout,Sunday'sclearerskiesweregreetedwithmuchenthusiasmandexcitement.The
onlydownsidetotheday'sweatherwerehighwindsthatgustedupto40mph,makingtheconditionssome
whatchallenging.DespiteSunday'swinds,theorganizersdidagreatjobofputtingeveryavailableaircraftin
thesky.AgainduetosequestrationtheairshowreliedheavilyontheAmericanAirpowerMuseumformuch
oftheflying.Hostingtheshow,astheydoeveryyear,themuseumwasgraciousasalwaysandholdsmuch
toseeduringthedowntimebetweenflyingaction.

Monday,MemorialDay,wasabeautifulday,bringinganicenumberofvisitorstotheMuseumgrounds.By
thentheCatalinaandDustyweregone,butitwasachancetoseetheMuseumsP47andL39intheairand
averylouddepartureoftheCanadianCF18sfromrunway19,justinfrontofthecrowd.Anicesurpriseon
MondaywasthearrivalofaGrummanTBM5Avenger.AlsotheC47tookoffseveraltimescarryingpaying
passengers on the DDay Flight Experience. On the ground there was a ceremony honoring Alice Lovejoy,
oneofthe38WASP(WomanAirforceServicePilot)killedinWorldWarII.

intheaction.Therearealsomanyspectatorswhochoosetoparkalongtheairportfenceandwatchtheac
tionfromtheveryedgeoftherunway.Thisalsoprovidesanexcellentview,howeverkeepinmindthatthe
fenceishigh(andtoppedwithbarbedwire)anditwillimpedeyourabilitytotakepictures(unlessyoubringa
ladderordon'tmindstandingontopofyourcar).

Allinall,the2013showwasadisappointmentcomparedtoyearspast,butthatwasnofaultoftheorganiz
ers.Thatbeingsaid,onarelativescale,thisshowwasatriumph.WithsequestrationandMotherNature
againstthem,theorganizersoftheJonesBeachAirShow,performersandtheAmericanAirpowerMuseum

Theweatherwaschangingalotfromsunnytodarkcloudsandtorain.Dueto
the weather the Polish Iskras didn't fly on Saturday. The Ramex Delta Tactical
DemonstrationTeamflewinheavyrainonSaturday!Sundaywasbetterweather
wise.OnSundaytheflyingprogramstartedat10:15AMwithaparachutedem
onstration,followedbyanaerobaticglider,EVAAsolowiththeXtra300,EC725
CarachaldemowitheliteArmyunit,RedDevils,RedArrows,asoloFougaMagis
ter, Cartouche Dor with their TB30 Epsilon followed by a lunch break. After

yesterday,duringtheGoldenAgeofAviation.Flyinglowandfast,buzzingbyjustacoupleoffeetabovethe
heads of the eager crowds Of course contemporary barnstorming is nothing like that anymore, due to
safetyregulations.Theclosestwegettothemarethewingwalkers,whocontinuethebarnstormingtradi
tionintheirvintagebiplanes,oraccuratereproductionaircraftofvintagedesign.

MyreverieisinterruptedasAuroraroarstolife,producing500HPontakeoff.Sheclawsfortheskysoon
afterthethrottleisadvanced,makingforaveryshorttakeoffrollandhighclimbrate.Thedistinctivegrowl
isuniquetothe450.AlargepartoftheroarofAuroracomesfromthepropellertips,whichreachsuper
sonicspeedatfullpower.

Myflightlastedabout
twenty minutes, as we made a
couple of circles around the airport and
nearby countryside, at an altitude of approximately
1300 ft (396 m) with an airspeed of just over 80 mph (134
kph).Itwasquiteleisurelyandalthoughnoaerobaticswere
performed(toobad)itwasenjoyable.

Aurora is a beautiful 450 HP Stearman that was acquired


fromSteveWagner,whometiculouslyrestoredtheairplane
from the ground up. This monster Stearman is unlike any
other on the air show circuit. Aside from her oneofakind
paintscheme,hermodificationsarewhatsetherapartfrom
anyotherStearman.

AuroraisbuiltwithallnewDouglasFirsparsandSitkaSpruce
wood. She has a complete inverted fuel and oil system, an
extra flying wire, all new birdcages, all new sheetmetal, a
stainless steel firewall,all new stainless steelcables, and all
newcontrolbearings,pulleys,cablesandhardware.Thewingshave(4)equalspanaileronswithservotabsonthebottomandthetailisbuilt
withacounterbalancedelevator.ThecrownjewelisthefuelinjectedPratt&WhitneyR985450horsepowerradialenginewithcustomized
dualstackexhausts.Becausetheairshowsmokehasbeenplumbedintobothexhaustsitproducesanimpressivelylargeandbeautifulsmoke
trailthatsometimespaintsdualtrailsinthesky.

AurorawascompletedbytwoofthebestStearmanmechanicsintheUSA:JimCarlson,(formerRedBaronHeadofMaintenance)andRyan
Dulas(formerRedBaronMechanic).Sheisnotonlyawonderfullybuiltrestoration,butwasinthebestofhandsduringhercompletion.The
restorationwasfinishedanddeliveredtoJaneonJune25,2010.

Ingloriousweather,witharecordattendanceandserioustrafficcongestion,bothinandout,theCosford
Airshowisonewhichisahighlightofthisyearsseason.TheshowincludedanappearancebyVulcanXH558,
flanked on both sides by the RV8tors. The Dambusters commemoration was also brought to the fore by a
flypast of a trio of Hurricane, Spitfire and Lancaster Aircraft. The very modern and capable Eurofighter
Typhoon was put through its paces, providing some very interesting photographs as it whipped up the
airflowtoformcondensationallovertheairframe.

TheRAFChinookreturnedtotheAirshowcircuit,andthedisplayillustratedtheagilityandmanoeuvrability
of this 11 ton helicopter, all accompanied with the distinctive wokka wokka noise of the rotor blades. A
secondary demo of the helicopter was used to highlight the role of the Medical Emergency Response
Team(MERT)andanevacuationofacasualtycouldbecompletedinunder90seconds.

TheRedArrowsalsodisplayedtheirdistinctiveredHawksshowingofftheirnewdisplayfor2013includinga
tributetotheLancaster.Inadditionthecivilianaerobaticteamswereinattendanceincluding,TheBladesin
theirExtra300'sandtheUKAerostarsintheirYakolevs,thisteamputonafantasticdisplay,andtheschemes
oneachaircraftprovidedavisualtreatagainsttheblueskybeinghighlightedbytheirsmoketrails.

bestviews,astheorganisersdoparkalotofgeneralaviationaircraftonthecrowdsideoftherunway,which
canobstructtheviewoftheaircraftmovementsdependingonwhereyouarelocated,soyou havetoget
yourspotearly.OverallaveryniceonedayAirshow,providinganicemixofvintageandmodernaircraft.

TheairshowinVolkelwasthehighlightoftheRNLAFOpenDaysin2013.Thisyearwasthe100thAnniver
saryofMilitaryAviationintheNetherlands.Over250,000peoplecelebratedthetwodaylongfestivities.
ThiswasthelargestaviationeventintheNetherlandsandthepublicwasabletoenjoyairdemosfromhome
andabroad.

Thegatesopenedat8AM,theairshowstartedat9AM,andcontinued
nonstopuntil5PM.Theshowwasverywellorganizedanddespitetraffic
jamsontheroadstothebase,bothdayswentoffwithoutproblems.The
weatherchangedoftenfromsunnytodarkcloudsandtorain.Saturday
was much better than on Sunday for the public, although on Sunday the downpour at
lunchtimedidnotdeterthepublic.Oncetheweatherbrightenedintheafternoon,morevisitors
continuedtoarrive.

Both the solo performances and the group formation demonstrations were
spectacular. The teams included the SU22 Fitter from Poland, Ramex Delta
and the Patrouille de France from France, Frecce Tricolori from Italy, Red
ArrowsfromtheUK,PatrouilleSuissefromSwitzerland,andthePilatusPC7
TeamfromAustria.Thesoloperformanceswereoutstandingseveralofthemincluded
flares such as from the C130J of the Danish Air Force, and the RNLAF Demo Apache Helicopter
among them, what a sight! One of the many highlights was the Launch Airpower Demo with all types of
aircraftfromtheRoyalNetherlandAirForce.Andthenamomentthatnobodywillforget:theDutchairline
KLMhadinvited130Childrenwithcancertoaspecialflight.TheBoeing737wasescortedby(10)F16from
theRNLAF.Wow,whatasight,onceinalifetimeopportunitytoseesomanyfightersescortinganairliner!

TherarelyseenrestoredSwedishSaabViggen,andletusnotforgettheF16SoloTurk,solosofthe
BelgiumF16andtheF16fromtheRNLAFflownbyCapt.StefanStitchHutten.

What a feast for any aviation enthusiast; two fantastic days! What an excellent way to

So why was it best if it was smaller than before


and when compared to recent and larger air shows in
HamiltonorWaterloo?

Thevolunteerstaffandtheorganizerswerealotfriendlierwiththe"whatcan
we do for you attitude" without any snarky comments, thus hospitality goes a
long ways. But apart from the friendly smiling faces, the performers besides the
Snowbirds and the CF18, performed instead of just going up making one loop and

The weather was far from the greatest on Media day and the Hour of Power was a bit delayed, in factit
rainedonandoffallday.TheHourofPowerstartedbywelcomingspeechesfromdignitariesandthepres
entationofcoloursbyVeteransandAirCadets.TheflyingstartedwithSeanD.TuckerandhisOracleChal
lengerIII,withanincredibleteaserperformancefortheweekend.SeanTuckerisaflyingiconatairshows,a
worldclassaerobaticpilot,andaperfectgentlemen.TheB17performedaswellhowever,theCF18could
not;itwasrumouredthereweresometechnicalissues.SincetherewasonlyoneCF18withouttheusual
secondCF18Basbackupincaseofissues,everybodyhopedthatforwhateverreasonitdidnotflywouldbe
resolvedforSaturday'sandSunday'sshow.Itwas.

The cuts imposed on the Department of Defense by the Congressional budget sequestration have done
whatenemyforcesonlywishtheycoulddo:groundU.S.airpower.TheDefenseDepartmenthascancelled
militaryaircraftparticipationatairshowsandotherpubliceventsacrosstheglobethatincludedeventhe
ParisAirShow.Itwasarealchallengefortheorganizersfor2013tolineuptopperformersandstaticair
craft.Whiletheperformerswereimpressivethatincludedthe
Canadian iconic Snowbirds, CF18, Sean D. Tucker (see
more about him on page 92), Harvard Aircraft For
mationTeam,CAFRedTailMustangP51C,CAF
B17G Sentimental Journey, WWI replica
aircraft from Great War Flying Museum,

AsmentionedtheweatherhamperedtheattendanceabitonSaturday,butclearedupnicelybythestartof
thedisplayperformances,anditwasverysunnyandhumid.Sunday'sweatherwasbetterwithcoolertem
peratures.AsfortheactualdisplaysSeanD.Tuckerdazzledthecrowswithhisoneofthekindperformance,
whathedoesintheairwithhisspecialOracleChallengerIIIisunbelievable!TheHeritageFlightwiththeHar
vardandtheRedTailP51CMustang,pilotedbyGregBurnardandBill"Shep"Shepardrespectively,thatwas
arealcrowdpleaseralongwiththeB17GfromArizona.TherewasaHerculesSARdemonstrationoverthe
wheatfield,andseveralotherdisplays.Forachange,itwasnottheSnowbirdsthatendedtheshow,instead

OnFridaymorningaround10:30am,June28th,IhadthepleasureofgoingupinaPiperSeneca,support
planeforaphotoshoot,attheGreatLakesInternationalAirShow,St.ThomasAirport,Ontario,Canada.The
twinengineSeneca,thathascounterrotatingpropellers,hadtheleftdoorremovedtofacilitatethephoto
shoot.IsharedmyridewithalocalTVstationcameramen,andluckilyforme,Iwastheonlyphotographer
offeredtheride.Thus,IdidnothavetojugglewithotherstogetagoodviewpointfromtheSenecawhen
Tuckerpulledupbesidesouraircraft.

Our flight lasted about 20 minutes above the surrounding grounds of the St. Thomas Airport. During our
flightSeanwasflyingascloseas5feetfromtheSeneca:flyinguprightandinverted,andmakingveryquick
snaprollswithandwithoutsmoke.IwasabletocaptureseveralexceptionalqualityimageswithmyNikon
D80036MPcamerawiththe24120mmf4VRlens,althoughtheD800isnotexactlyanactionorientedcam
eraduetoslowframeratesandlimitedbuffer.Seanalsorolledofftohisleftandperformedsomeofhisrou
tinesfromadistancefortheTVcameramen.UponlandingSeangraciouslyposedforimagesbesideshisspe
cialbuiltaircraft.

Later in the afternoon, I was also invited for a practice performance of the triple ribbon cut. Sean is the
world'sonlypilottoperformatripleribboncut.Hefliesthroughtheribbonsat220mphinrightknifeedge
forthefirstribbon,thenleftknifeedgeandfinallyinverted.Theribbonsareonly25feetoffoftheground
and750feetbetweeneachset.

ToflybesideSeanisarealprivilegeandpleasureatthesametime.ForthosewhoarenotfamiliarwithSean
D.Tucker,hewasbornin1952,isanAmericanaerobaticpilotandisconsideredtobeoneofthebestinthe
world.Hehasbeenflyingairshowsworldwidesincethemid70'sandhaswonnumerousaerobaticcompeti
tions. In that time, Sean has flown more than 1100 performances at more than 450 air shows, in front of
morethan100millionfans.

In1997,TuckerstartedtheSeanD.TuckerSchoolofAerobaticFlight,withthestated
aimofsettingandspreadingthestandardforaviationsafetyinaerobaticsandavia
tion at large. In 2004, through a partnership with the Tutima Watch Company, the
school became the Tutima Academy of Aviation and Safety. The Academy, located in
KingCity,California,offersavarietyofcoursesincludingstall/spinrecognitionandrecov
erytraining,aerobaticproficiencytraining,alowlevelaerobaticmentorshipprogram,and
formationaerobaticflighttraining.

Tobeanaerobaticpilotonemustbeinexcellentphysicalandmentalstate.Inordertoflythe
highGmanoeuvres,bothpositiveandnegativewhileretainingsituationalawareness,Seanhas
to be in an excellent shape both mentally and physically. To stay fit Sean maintains a rigorous
physicaldailytrainingschedule.Hisworkoutincludesweightliftingandcardio,over340daysper
yearandhepracticeshisairshowroutinethreetimeseveryday.

Sean'saccomplishmentsandhonoursareamilelongandtheyinclude:beinganHonorarymemberof
theThunderbirds,BlueAngels,CanadianSnowbirds,BrazilianSmokeSquadron,andGoldenKnights,one
oftheLivingLegendsinAviation,NationalAviationHallofFameinductee,recipientoftheCrystalEagle
Award,theGeneralCharlesE.YeagerInternationalAeronauticalAchievementAward,in2000WorldAir
showFederationChampion,19982001UndefeatedChampionoftheChampionshipAirshowPilotsAssocia
tionChallenge,in1988U.S.NationalAdvancedAerobaticChampionjusttonamesome.

Sean'sOracleChallengerIIIisaspeciallybuiltoneofakindaircraft.Itisrecognizedasthepremieraerobatic
biplaneintheworld.TheOracleChallengerIIIwascustombuiltbyborrowingelementsfromfivedifferent
aircraft in order to provide Sean with the necessary capabilities to perform his aweinspiring
"SkyDance"performancesatairshowsacrosstheworld.TheOracleChallengerIIIispow
ered by a 400+ horsepower custom built Lycoming AEIO540D4B5 engine with a com
posite Hartzell threebladed propeller. The aircraft only weights 1,129 pounds and
hasatopspeedof300mph.Theaircrafthasarevolutionarysetofwingsthatuse

The first six months of 2013 proved to be yet again very interesting in terms of aircraft movements in
Malta.Wehadagoodmixtureofaircraftcivil,businessjets,cargoandmilitary.Unfortunatelyitwasnot
possibleformetocapturethemallbutinthisarticleIwillhighlightthemostimportantmovementsIman
agedtoobserve.

This year saw five new airlines starting operations to Malta namely Air Baltic from Riga (Latvia), Tran
savia.comfromOrly(France)andAmsterdam(Holland),WizzAirfromBudapest(Hungary),TurkishAirlines
fromIstanbul(Turkey),andMonarchfromEastMidlands(England).Otherairlinesoperatedonashortterm
basis.TheseincludedNiki,AirEuropa,Finnair,Atlasjet,Adria,SunAdriaandVimAirlinesamongstothers
whilstsomeaircraftunfortunatelymadeamedicalstoporjustafuelstop.

Sundayseemstobeaverybusydayforourairportthroughoutthesummerperiodmainlydueto9charter
flights from Germany operated by Air Berlin (5), TUI Fly (2) and Condor (2) to ferry passengers to/from
MaltatheseflightsareinconnectionwithaseapassengercruisestartingandfinishinginMaltaonboard
theMeinSchiff2.TUIFlyandCondorareoperatingwithaircraftsportingspecialcolourswhichaddtothe
localspotterscollection.

AgoodamountofaircraftflewinformaintenanceatLufthansaTechnikMaltaandSRTTechnicsMaltafa
cilities.ThebulkofthesewereLufthansaandEasyjetaircraftsincetheseareownedbythembutairlines
such as Brussels Airlines, Air Afrique, and Vueling also sent their aircraft for maintenance in the Malta
plants.TheAirBishkekA320212withregistrationEX32001wasoneoftheaircraftwhichcaughtthespot
ters interest as, besides its colourful livery, it transpired that this aircraft from Kyrgyzstan, obtained a
waivertoflyintoEuropeanAirspacesinceitwasnotcarryinganypassengersandwascomingtoMaltafor
maintenance.

Themilitarymovementswerealsogreetedwithenthusiasm,sometimesinextremeinclementweatheras
wasthecaseofthearrivaloftwoSaudiAirForceTyphoonsregistrationsZK089andZK090fromWarton
base in the UK on the 25th April, which were on one of the many delivery flights planned to stop at the
MaltaInternationalAirportthisyear.Theirarrivalwasintorrentialrainandwindsgusting45knotswe
hadadifficultytoevenstandletalonetakephotos.AnotherSaudiAirForceTyphoonsarrivalwasonthe

27thJunewhenZK085andZK086landedinexcellentMaltesesummerweatherafterperformingsometouch
andgosandlowflypasts.
