K. Phugeneswaran was so moved by his teacher's reaction to his only A in the
PMR test that he harnessed it as motivation to study hard. But it wasn't easy for him
because there is no water or electricity in his house as his parents are too poor. So he
studied and slept in the school canteen or the assembly area for two years.

KOTA KINABALU: Some 500 villagers staged a peaceful protest against some
conservationists' campaign to stop the construction of a bridge across the
Kinabatangan river.
The local community appealed to the conservationists, saying the bridge could
ease their access across the river. However, the conservationists said it could
affect the eco-system and wildlife movement in that area.

Dear Editor,
The residents of Taman Tun Dr. Ismail have to make
do with a small opening between the fence and railings
to get to the post office. This can be risky and
dangerous during rainy days when the footpath is wet
and slippery.
It costs very little to cut open the fence and install a
swing gate so that residents can have a safer and easier
access. I hope the authorities will listen to our request
for a swing gate.

Questions 16 -25
Read the following text and answer the questions thatfollow.
Kombucha tea has taken off worldwide and is being praised as a natural beverage that
can aid digestion, boost immunity and offer other health benefits.
What is it? This sweetened black tea is steeped in a culture of yeasts and bacteria called
the "kombucha mushrooms", which refers to the shape of the culture that
floats to the surface after a week or so. The culture is available online.
Who's drinking it? While the tea has been used in Asia and Eastern Europe for
centuries as a remedial tonic, today it's enjoyed for general good health and as a
digestive boost sipped after meals. It tastes like fizzy, sweet and sour vinegar
though it's increasingly being sold commercially with flavourings such as
blueberry, ginger, mango and peach.
Benefits? This tea is marketed as an anti-ageing drink, but proponents claim the tea can
help with everything from baldness, insomnia, stomach problems, arthritis
and chronic fatigue to multiple sclerosis, AIDS and cancer. Its high level of
antioxidants can boost the immune system to reverse ageing and fight disease.
What's the truth? Scientific evidence about kombucha tea's health claims does not exist. Several cases of
the drink causing stomach upset, gastritis and allergic reactions have been reported. Also, it
can contain moulds and fungi and is highly acidic.

Aftr following a slow true for several kilometres on the bumpy country road, I
decided to oertake the veh1.cle. As I pulled out, I saw a 4WD approaching. So I
retreated behmd the truck with my foot on the brake. Suddenly, my car hit a kerb
and .began to swerve. In an instant, it spun into the path of the 4WD. As if in slow
motion, I watched helplessly as the 4WD collided with my car.
Afterwards, drifting in and out of consciousness, I was vaguely aware of various
emergency personnel trying to free me from my mangled car. Fortunately, the first
person at the scene was a nurse. When she called for the ambulance, she requested
for a helicopter rescue service. No one knew the extent of my injuries as
adrenaline masked some of my pain. As I lapsed in and out of consciousness, the
fire rescue team cut my car door away and removed me from the vehicle.
With the road blocked and traffic backing up, my mother, who was on her way to
work, joined the growing queue of vehicles just around the corner and out of view
of my car. She instinctively knew her little girl was in trouble so she rang the
school to see if I had arrived and then called my father. A friend located her and
told her to come to the scene of accident. As my mother passed a police officer, he
pulled her aside and told her to be strong. Dad arrived and both he and Mum spoke
to me before I was airlifted to hospital, over 80km away.
It was eight hours before my parents saw me again in the intensive care unit. I had
breathing and feeding tubes down my throat and up my nose, so I couldn't talk. I
motioned for a pen and wrote to my parents that I was sorry. My parents held my
hands and told me that I was going to be alright soon.
On day three, I had another operation and was a?serred to a ward. It was only
then that I began to understand how serious my mJnes were. l ha over 40 bone
fractures in the right-hand side of my body. My pelvis had snapped in three places,
I had one broken vertebra, three broken ribs, my collarbone and shoulder .blade
were snapped, my lung was bruised and I had more than 30 fractured bones m my
face.
