UsingHDTuneisveryeasy.
Firstselecttheharddisk,thenchooseafunction.

Benchmark

AftertheStartbuttonispressedHDTunewillperformseveralteststomeasuretheperformanceoftheharddisk.
TransferRate
Thereadspeedismeasuredinmegabytespersecond(MB/sec).Theminimum,maximumandaveragespeedare
displayedontheright.Thebluelineonthegraphshowsthereadperformanceacrossthedisk.
*note*:Onemegabyteequalsto1048576bytes(=1024kilobytes).Somebenchmarksdefineonemegabyteas1000000
byteswhichresultsinhigherscores.
Intheoptionsscreen(pressthe

button)youcanselectthetestduration.

AccessTime
Theaverageaccesstimeismeasuredanddisplayedinmilliseconds(ms).Themeasuredaccesstimesareshownon
thegraphastheyellowdots.
BurstRate
Theburstrateisthehighestspeed(inmegabytespersecond)atwhichdatacanbetransferredfromthedriveinterface
(IDEorSCSIforexample)totheoperatingsystem.
CPUUsage
TheCPUusageshowshowmuchCPUtime(in%)thesystemneedstoreaddatafromtheharddisk.

Health

ThisfunctionusesS.M.A.R.T.(SelfMonitoringAnalysisandReportingTechnology)togetinformationaboutthehealthof
theharddisk.

Worst:theworstvaluewhichhasbeenrecordedsincetheharddiskwasfirstused
Threshold:thevalueofanyoftheparametersshouldnevergetbelowthethreshold.
Data:showstheusabledatawhichbelongstotheID.
Status:statusoftheparameter(OKorfailed).
Powerontime
Thepowerontimeisusuallyindicatedinhours,butsomemanufacturersshowthistimeinminutesorevenseconds.

ErrorScan

BypressingtheStartbuttonthewholesurfaceofthediskwillbescannedfordefects.
Defectswillshowupasredblocks.

Temperature
Thetemperatureisshownonthemainscreenandonthetaskbar.
Intheoptionsscreenyoucanselectthetemperatureunits(CelsiusorFahrenheit)andwhetherthetemperatureshouldbe
showninthetaskbar.

Youcanalsospecifythecriticaltemperaturevalue.Ifthisvalueisreachedthefontcolorchangesandawarning

messagepopsup.

Forgoodoperationthetemperatureshouldstaybelow50C.Thetemperatureshouldneverexceed60C.

Startminimized:HDTunewillbeminimizedtothetaskbar.ToopenHDTune,doubleclickonthetemperaturedisplayor
rightclicktobringupamenu.
