INTRODUCTION
This book is inspired by the Buddhist tradition, but does not belong to Buddhism
exclusively. It includes much that is from my own meditation and prayer to God, and it is
for all who feel called to work with all or any part of it.
I offer it not as a replacement for your present spiritual or religious path, but as an
addition that can enhance what you already do. If it attracts you, it needs very little extra
time or effort, yet the blessings will be tangible.
My book is a book of devotion. It does not concern itself with arguments of
doctrine or with dividing lines between religions. I use the word "God," but let's, each
one, define God for ourselves by our own experience. Nor have I sought to write a book
of scholarship, for there are people far more capable.
In this book we will learn a way to let God into our chakras, the energy centers of
our being, in order to transform them through the mercy of the great Mother of the East,
Kuan Yin.
Note: This book, a companion volume to The Hearts of Kuan Yin, repeats some
introductory and concluding material from the first book, as a convenience. The core of
the book, however, is new material and further opportunity for oneness with the Mother
of Mercy.

BACKGROUND
The significance of the bodhisattva Kuan Yin, the "Hearer of Sounds," is that
there is a Principle and a Person, both beyond and in ourselves, that meditates on the
vibration and tone which every part of life gives off, the music of every living thing.
Where the melody, harmony, and rhythm of the music is wrong, out of tune with
the Cosmos or God, this Principle and Person gives of Herself in supreme caring and
compassion for the pain of God, sends forth a clear, pure Tone to realign, as a magnet
does iron filings, this noise in life (for there is no noise in God, only music).
This Tone is mercy, forgiveness, grace; transformation, transmutation,
transcendence; alchemy, healing, and freedom -- the graciousness and love of the Whole

for those parts which have strayed and lost touch with the pulse of God, with the
symphony of God's Purpose.
For those who would further that work of Kuan Yin, who would fully anchor that
mercy and healing in themselves and in the world, I offer this book of meditation and
mantra.

THE CHAKRAS AND KUAN YIN

We have energy centers in our being which connect to our Higher Consciousness
and step down its Energy for our use. In Sanskrit these are called chakras, which means
literally "wheels." The idea is that each chakra is a spinning vortex of energy.
We have seven "major" and five "minor" chakras. This is not in terms of
importance, but just as a piano has seven major and five minor keys. Finally, there is an
eighth chakra which is a bridge between the energies of the seven and the five.
The chakras are also vessels. They contain energy. Each chakra is a creative space.
In each such space let's put now an Action of Kuan Yin. We will let Kuan Yin
into our chakras so that She can transform them.
In Buddhist tradition, Kuan Yin holds various implements in her hands which
symbolize her Holy Spirit Actions or Powers, her "Skillful Means" to save beings. Kuan
Yin is very skillful. She is said to have a thousand hands, which really means that her
Actions are limitless.
Now let's bless our chakras with some of Kuan Yin's Actions named in the
Buddhist Sutra of the Great Compassion Heart Mantra. The Actions are not limited to
these chakras and can manifest anywhere needed, but it is helpful to anchor them there.
To begin with, it is important to center our consciousness in the heart. For that
reason I have taught the hearts of Kuan Yin first. (See my book, The Hearts of Kuan Yin).
All things begin with the heart. So as we let Kuan Yin into our chakras, let's observe the
process from her Heart in our heart.
Remember also that every mantra of Kuan Yin contains her boundless Mercy and
Freedom, whatever the specific action we are naming. This Mercy is the backdrop for
everything else Kuan Yin gives us, and it can be visualized as the Purple Lotus Flower
within each chakra. Then see the specific Action just above the Lotus of Liberation.

THE CROWN CHAKRA

The topmost chakra in our body is called the crown chakra. It is also called the
thousand-petaled lotus. When fully purified and activated, it is the center of supreme
enlightenment and Buddhahood.
Visualize within the crown of the head the Purple Lotus Flower of Liberation. Just
above it is a radiant golden-yellow Wheel of Dharma, laying flat upon the Lotus. It is
turning, and as it turns it draws down into our beings the Blessings of all the Buddhas
above.
It is an Action or Power of Kuan Yin, and She is blessing our crown chakra.

The mantra is:

Om Mani Padme Hum
Na Mo Chin Lun Kuan Yin
(nah mo jin loon gwahn een)
In Kuan Yin's Gold Wheel, I Trust!

THE THIRD EYE CHAKRA

The next chakra down is at the level of the brow. It is the center for spiritual
seeing. It is the single eye which Jesus referred to when he said, "If your eye be single,
your whole body will be full of light." What we put our attention on, with our third eye
and our physical eyes, tends to determine how we act and what we become. Seeing
determines being. Recall the ninth Heart, the no-seeing and no-grasping Heart.
Visualize the Purple Lotus within the center of the brow, and upon it a pearlshaped gem, emerald green in color and radiating rays of emerald light. Surrounding it is
an aura of rose light. This is right seeing combined with right desiring.
This is the Wish-Fulfilling Pearl. It brings wealth and abundance into our life,
everything we need to fulfill our true reason for being. It grants all our right desires, the
wishes of our true Self. It brings our life into alignment with the divine Will and the
divine Flow. It crystallizes, brings into physical being, whatever is good and needful for
our life. And it grants us ever-increasing purity of vision and ability to discriminate
between true and false desires, motives, and actions.
It is important to remember that this is not just a gem, it is Kuan Yin's gem. It is
Kuan Yin blessing our third eye, Something and Someone greater than we are extending
help and grace to us. Then we can, step by step, grow in that grace until we contain all of
it and can claim Kuan Yin's Gem as our gem, for we have become all that She is. That is
the goal, and that is supreme enlightenment and Buddhahood.
Jesus said, "These things shall you do, and greater things...", and this is Kuan
Yin's plan for us as well. It is her intent first to bless, purify, and heal us by her Actions,
and then, when it is safe and wise to do so, to empower us, so that we can work her works
and be a world savior.
The mantra is:
Om Mani Padme Hum
Na Mo Ju I Chu Kuan Yin
(nah mo roo ee joo gwahn een)
In Kuan Yin's Wish-Fulfilling Pearl, I Trust!

THE THROAT CHAKRA

The next chakra is at the throat level. It is the center of right speech and the
creative word. Words have tremendous power to create or to destroy. Our affirmations,
our statements of intent and desire, our vows -- all of these steer our course. Kind words
heal. Hateful and scornful words steal life and self-worth, and can even kill.
Kuan Yin offers to take dominion over our throat and tongue. Visualize within the
throat the Purple Lotus, and above it a crystal Seal of Authority with Kuan Yin's name
engraved in it. It radiates strength and the right use of power. It also drips kindness and
sweetness, which soothes all bitterness, anger and harmfulness and washes it away. Taste
the sweetness in the throat, and feel the waves of kindness, gentleness and peace.
This is Kuan Yin's Seal that authorizes you to speak the Dharma in every skillful
way. The mantra is:
Om Mani Padme Hum
Na Mo Pao Yin Kuan Yin
(nah mo bao yeen gwahn een)
In Kuan Yin's Crystal Seal, I Trust!

THE HEART CHAKRA

Next comes the heart chakra. This is the spiritual center of consciousness. The
Ten Hearts of Kuan Yin anchor here, as well as in other dimensions.
The heart chakra is the center of Love and Devotion. A pure heart radiates these
and other related qualities such as generosity, magnanimity, tenderness, and patience. St.
Paul said that without love every other quality is "as sounding brass or tinkling cymbal."
Power without love is tyranny, wisdom without love cold intellectuality; and action
without love wreaks havoc.
Visualize in the center of the chest the Purple Lotus Flower, and just above it a
Crystal Bell radiating rainbow-red light. As with all the Actions of Kuan Yin, it radiates
out to bless our entire being and all life. The rays pour out, the rays return -- sending out
blessings, bringing back blessings. Both actions go on simultaneously, in an eternal
interchange or reciprocity with all life.
This Bell sounds out ringing tones of love, compassion, mercy, kindness, as well
as honor and courage and energy to defend the gentler qualities.
This is the Crystal Bell of Kuan Yin; the mantra is:
Om Mani Padme Hum
Na Mo Pao Do Kuan Yin
(nah mo bao dwo gwahn een)
In Kuan Yin's Crystal Bell, I Trust!

THE SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA

The solar plexus chakra, at the level of the diaphragm, is the fount of living
waters, the waters of emotion, energy in motion. It is the focal point of our feelings and
desires, and is meant to be the focal point of God's feelings. Our desires energize all our
other faculties; without intense feeling and desire we rarely accomplish anything.
Because our emotions and desires are so powerful and are the moving force of our
lives, it is vital that they be under control and in harmony. Poisoned, unbalanced
emotions wreck plans and lives. The emotion of God is a vast wave that sweeps all with
it, yet to a definite, noble and loving end. Our emotions need to be the same and in mesh
with God's.
To that end, accept the intercession of Kuan Yin. Visualize the Purple Lotus
within the solar plexus, and just above it a cloud. It is five-colored, focusing the five rays
of Buddhahood. The cloud contains white, blue, yellow, ruby, and green, and hidden in
these are other unknown hues. These are the forces of Creation in complete and potent
Balance. The Cloud radiates harmony, balance, divine control and mastery. It radiates
healing and comfort. This cloud has dominion over all forces of the atom and can
neutralize all misuse of nuclear energy. It is the cloud of knowing and unknowing, the
cloud of making and unmaking; and it is a vital key to attaining all your right desires. It
has the ability to expand infinitely, as we gain mastery of it in pure motivation. But
remember that it is Kuan Yin's Cloud until you earn the right to make it your own.
It is called the Five-colored Cloud; the mantra is:
Om Mani Padme Hum
Na Mo Wu Se Yun Kuan Yin
(nah mo woo suh yoon gwahn een)
In Kuan Yin's Five-Colored Cloud, I Trust!

Note: As we place Kuan Yin's Actions in the chakras below the heart, let's take care to
keep ourselves centered in the heart chakra. The lower chakras tend to be our most
congested centers, with many impurities and imbalances. We are letting Kuan Yin into
these chakras to begin cleansing and aligning them. She will do the work, and we will
stay safe in our heart and in her Heart.
We need only look at these chakras and at Kuan Yin's Actions in them as long as
we feel comfortable and calm doing so. As soon as we do not, we will look up again to
the heart center and above, trusting and leaving Kuan Yin to do her perfect work below.
It is also, especially important in these lower chakras to remember the
foundational action of the Purple Lotus Flower, Kuan Yins freedom and mercy.

THE SOUL CHAKRA

This is the place of the evolving self or soul, the spiritual womb we all have,
regardless of gender. It is also the physical center of balance and is used in all the martial
arts. The seat of the soul is meant to focus the Womb of the Mother of all the Buddhas,
and in it the soul is meant to be born and reborn into Christhood and Buddhahood.
Visualize the Purple Lotus Flower, in the place about two inches below the navel.
See that lotus radiating freedom and liberation to the soul within the spiritual womb, and
raying out to bless all life. Feel it enfolding the soul in mercy and forgiveness, lifting her
spirits and propelling her forward in happiness to serve and evolve toward Buddhahood.
This Purple Lotus flame is the grace of Kuan Yin that transmutes karma and sin,
provided that the soul commits to give grace where grace has been given. Mercy is as
mercy does. (Recall the parable of the unmerciful servant which Jesus taught.)
Now just above the Purple Lotus, see a cluster of purple Grapes that drench the
evolving soul in Kuan Yin's Sweetness, and foster right growth, wellness and wholeness.
The mantra for the purple Grapes is:
Om Mani Padme Hum
Na Mo P'u T'ao Kuan Yin
(nah mo poo tao gwahn een)
In Kuan Yin's Grapes, I Trust!

THE BASE CHAKRA

This chakra is seated at the bottom of the spine. It is well-known as the focus of
the kundalini fire, the "serpent" force which is so-called for its sine-wave movement
when it begins to rise.
This force is the pure creative Fire of the Mother. It is intended to rise up to meet
the Father in the crown chakra and take the soul with it into supreme enlightenment. But
before the kundalini can safely rise through the chakras, the chakras must be cleansed and
strengthened. Otherwise severe damage can result, causing mental and emotional
imbalances and even loss of sanity.
Therefore let us seek sponsorship. First let Kuan Yin into the chakras, and leave
the movement of energies to her Wisdom.
Visualize the Purple Lotus Flower in the chakra at the base of the spine, and
resting upon it as a platform is a crystal mirror that shines with diamond-white light rays.
This light is purity and harmony, and it makes possible all merit, accomplishment,
structure and organization. It indeed provides the base for all activities, and it provides
the energy, the shakti of the Mother. As it lays upon the Lotus Flower horizontally, it
receives the radiance of the Gold Wheel in the crown chakra and reflects it back up and in
all directions, re-receiving and re-creating over and over the blessings of the Buddha
above the crown in the lower levels of physical action.
This is the Crystal Mirror of Kuan Yin. It is her skillful means of blessing your

base or root chakra and your entire physical life and activity. The mantra is:
Om Mani Padme Hum
Na Mo Pao Ching Kuan Yin
(nah mo bao jing gwahn een)
In Kuan Yin's Crystal Mirror, I Trust!

A SUGGESTED RITUAL OF PRAYER

A helpful way to do the mantras is in groupings of ten (for the five Buddha rays, +
and -). Starting with 10 repetitions, you could build up (when time permits) to 50 or 100
at a sitting, then 500. One of the most powerful rituals is to do 1,000 at a sitting
(surprisingly, it can take less than a half hour). I recommend it when you are faced with a
matter of great importance or urgency. That is as far as will be practical for most of us,
except in a retreat setting where we are free to pray for many hours.
The primary, and simplest, mantra to use is Om Mani Padme Hum, as long as you are
mindful of the particular blessing you are meditating on and invoking (in other words,
being a co-bodhisattva with her!). If you are comfortable with Chinese, you can use the
Chinese "Na Mo...Kuan Yin" mantras--but it isn't necessary. [Note that in this 1996
edition, I used the older Wade-Giles romanization, rather than the newer Pinyin.]
Otherwise, pray without counting and without ceasing, aloud or silently, whenever
the Spirit moves you. Kuan Yin hears every call and answers in her WisdomCompassion, her Mercy and Freedom.
