Chinesehighereducationinstitutions(HEIs)generallyconductcoursesinChineselanguage.Applicantswithnocommandof
ChinesearegenerallyrequiredtotakeChineselanguagecoursesfor12yearsbeforetheirmajorstudies.Applicantswho
applytostudyscience,engineering,agriculture,medicine(westernmedicine),economics,managementandlawarerequired
totakeChineselanguagecoursesfor1year.Applicantswhoapplytostudyliterature,history,philosophy,andmedicine
(traditionalChinesemedicine,Chineseherbmedicine)arerequiredtotakeChineselanguagecoursesfor2years.
SomeoftheChineseHEIsofferpostgraduateprogramsandnondegreecoursesforgeneralandseniorscholarsinEnglish.
StudentswhoapplyfortheseprogramsarenotrequiredtotakeChineselanguagecourses.
3.HowmanykindsofuniversitiesarethereinChina?
TherearetwotypesofuniversitiesinChina:comprehensiveuniversityandprofessionaluniversity.Comprehensive
universitieshaveawiderangeofdisciplines,withtremendousstrengthinscientificresearchProfessionaluniversitiesare
generallyproficientincertaindisciplinesandactivitiescarriedoutbystudentsarefullofacademicatmosphere.
4.WhatkindofprogramcanIchoose?
Chinasuniversitiesofferthousandsofprogramsforforeignstudents.NondegreeprogramsteachingChineselanguageand
cultureareparticularlypopular,butitisalsopossibletoearnyourdegreeinChina.Mostdegreeprogramsaretaughtin
Chineseandthereforerequireacertainleveloflanguageproficiency.However,anincreasingnumberofEnglishtaught
degreeprogramsareavailable.

Degreeprograms:degreeprogramsbegininSeptemberatmostChineseuniversities.Asmallnumberofprogramscanadmit
studentsinFebruaryormarch.
Languageprograms:theonesemester(46months)languagecourseusuallyopensinbothsemesters(startinginboth
SeptemberandFebruary/March)theOneyearlanguageprogramusuallyopensinSeptembertheshorttermcoursesmay
havefixedtimesormayarrangeatimeattherequestofagroupofstudents.Shorttermsummerprogramsusuallystart
inJune,JulyorAugust,andlast18weeks.
6.IsiteasyforaforeigngraduatetofindajobinChina?
Thankstotheeconomicgrowth,theopportunitiesforforeignerswhowanttoworkinChinahaveincreasedconsiderablyinthe
lastfewyears.In1996,therewere180,000foreignworkersregisteredinChinaandthenumberisrapidlygrowing.
TeachingEnglishisoneofthemainjobareasforforeignersinChina,whilethereisalsoagrowingdemandforforeign
expertsinsales,engineeringandmanagement,etc.ThecurrentriseofChinahasmadeitveryclearthatpeoplewhocan
speakChineseandhavefirsthandexperienceoflivinginChinaaregoingtohaveagreatadvantageintermsofemployment.
