Analysis of the lovely bones film opening

The opening background is a light blue sky

with a light pink tint, featuring a mountain.
The recognisable logo appears around the
mountain, paramount studios. The scenery
creates a calm chilled feeling which makes
the audience feel intrigued to watch. The
logo appeals to audiences as Paramount
studios are renowned for their amazing
success with films. The music is quite a calm
relaxing music however; the music is dated
and has quite a tension feeling. The logo
paramount makes you think, high quality,
which makes you, have high expectations for
the film due to the high reputations.

Shot two:
The close up of the snow globe emphasises the
importance of it, maybe a symbol? The snow globe
containing an innocent penguin connotes a happy
film, a family film. The close up intensions is to
make the audience feel quite happy through the
innocent looking penguin; this portrays the genre of
the film, or does it? The fact that there is snow in
the globe portrays happiness, as children love snow.
However, white connotes quite a blank feeling quite
a mysterious unknown feeling, left empty? The title
which is appears across the snow globe emphasises
the importants of the title; lovely portrays a
harmless thing which makes someone happy. The
word bones conveys a harsh meaning.

The camera is zoomed in and the

penguin makes quite an innocent affect.
The music in the background is very calm
and chilled and makes the film look like a
normal drama. The music in the
background is a fine piano sound a very
slow rhythm. In addition there is a voice
over from an older girl looking down of
when she was young; this makes people
feel connected with the girl. The voice
over explains how she felt about that
moment in her life without a care in the
world, this makes the audience feel
connected as she speaks from her
experiences.

Shot four:
This shot is a close up. In this shot we see the
introduction of the characters. In this close up
we see a father and daughter, the close up was
used to emphasise the snow globe, to show the
significance of the snow globe the close up
pictures a little girl crying facing the direction of
the snow globe. This shot also shows the bond
between a father and a daughter as the father
comforts his daughter whilst she is upset about
her penguin locked away.

In this shot we see the characters in the

comfort of their home, this is
emphasised by the wide shot camera
angle. We see they are very peaceful,
this is shown by the relaxed position the
father is sitting in (legs crossed reading
leaned to the side). They used the wide
angle shot to emphasise the homely
feeling, they also did this to make them
seem like there are no worries in the
world. The colour scheme used is quite
an old set back fashion, containing lots
of bright colours for example the little
girls red dungarees and the blue
furnishings in the family space.

Shot five:
In shot five we see yet another close up, the
close up emphasises her facial expressions and
how shes developed from seconds before, and
now acknowledging that the penguin is in no
harm. At this point the camera is fading slightly;
this is at the two minute point. The reason the
camera is fading could mean this scene might
have been a flash back, or story of her growing
up. The fading connotes maybe this could be a
memory or a flash back, whilst something bad is
happening? Maybe there is a twist and this isnt
all good.

This is the first

edit introducing
the film company
Paramount
studio.
Paramount
studios is known
and recognised
for its renowned
past films and has
an amazing
reputation so
viewing this
before the film
would make the
audience feel that
the film would be
to a good quality
and made to a
high standard.
This appears 2
seconds into the
start of the film,
where it appears
for 10 seconds
before fading
away into the
next image.

The penguin
appears on
screen 12
seconds into
the film
opening, the
transition is a
fading affect
which slowly
brought the
audiences
attention to
the penguin.
The sound
made when
entering is a
light sound
almost like a
fairy tale
sound.

This image faded

in after a black
screen, the
whiteness and
purity of the
globe contrasted
against the black
screen which
emphasised the
globe.
The sound is
quite a jolly
sound which
makes viewers
view the film to
be happy.
This image was
saved at 30
seconds in and
lasted for about
15/20 seconds
before fading out
into the next
scene.

In the fourth
screenshot
the transition
between the
before shot
and after
shot jumps
straight in to
the next, this
gives of an
real life
effect that
its a current
feeling.
At this point
in time there
was no music
there was
the sound of
flicking the
pages of a
newspaper
and the
playing of
toys. This is
1 minute in
and the
scene lasted
30 seconds.

In this scene of
the little girl
crying this lasted
for a good 30/40
seconds which
showed the
audience the
father and
daughter bond,
which made the
audience
connect with the
characters.
The transition
between the
before and after
shot was a jump,
this was to make
the film look
more consistent.

This image was

the final image
and appeared 10
seconds before
the end of the
two minute
opening; this
lasted for around
5 seconds long
before the title
of the film
appeared. This
was screen
shotted at
1minuet and 52
seconds.
The young girls
facial expression
conveys
understanding
and happiness.
