Commissioning of Plumbing Systems

AIA / CES

Building commissioning has long been a part of the LEED rating system,
but few design professionals understand it well or know what to expect,
other than it is supposed to make the buildings work better. However, if
we pause and take a moment to learn, the benets which commissioning
creates are numerous. First, we take a general look at the building
commissioning to understand its purpose, what it takes to become a
commissioning authority, and what are some of the ways commissioning
can be priced as a service. Our focus then narrows to explore plumbing
commissioning specically and the scope of possible systems. In
addition, we will review the dierent stages of the process and how
engineers can get more out of the building commissioning process. The
session will then conclude with a series of lessons learned from past
projects. By the end, attendees should not only have a great handle on
plumbing commissioning but should be able to take away actionable
information to help improve their daily engineering practices.
Course Description

1. To provide an overview and understanding of how and why
commissioning evolved, the process that it follows, typical scopes of
service, and why proper commissioning is essential to successful
projects.
2. Understand commissioning certications, standards and guidelines,
how commissioning should be integrated into a project.
3. To become familiar specically with the Commissioning of Plumbing
Systems, its dierent stages, and how you can become involved with the
process.
4. Obtain actionable knowledge that can be applied to your plumbing
engineering practice from issues found in the eld from the standpoint
of a building commissioning authority.
