    In countries where English is spoken as a second or third language, students of science and mathematics have challenges with verbalizing formulae correctly. This is in part because of the lack of vocabulary, incorrect grammar and L1 interference. This poem is intended to support teachers in scaffolding as they teach scientific and mathematical concepts in such contexts as described earlier. It may be displayed, used in chorus, shared individually or set for reading and analysis within the broader curriculum.

    When this number and that one add up
    I get the sum of the two
    This is addition
    Adding numbers gives me their sum

    When I take away one number from another
    I get their difference
    This is subtraction

    When I get this number over that one
    I get their quotient
    This is division
    Dividing numbers gives me their quotient
