DESIGN CALCULATION OF SIGN BOARD PURLIN DESIGN (As Per BS5950 - 5)

DEAD LOAD CALCULATION:

Weight of Plywood 0.7kg/m2 / mm (Ref BS648)

Weight of 12mm thick Plywood = 0.084 KN/m2
Spacing of Purlin

= 1.23m

Load on Purlin

= 1.23 x 0.084 = 0.103KN/m

WIND LOAD CALCULATION:

Height of the Sign Board

= 21.50m

Basic wind speed (Vb)

= 45 m/sec.

Equivalent Site Wind Speed

= 45 / 1.62 = 27.78 m/s.

The site wind speed (Vs) - (clause 2.2.2.1 of BS 6399-2.1977)

(Vs) = Vb x sa x sd x ssx sp.
Vb = 28.38 m/sec (clause 2.2.2.1 of BS 6399-2.1977)
Sa = 1+0.001x21.50 = 1.0215
Sd = 1.00 - (clause 2.2.2.1 of BS 6399-2.1977)
Ss = 1.00 - (clause 2.2.2.1 of BS 6399-2.1977)
Sp = 1.00 - (clause 2.2.2.1 of BS 6399-2.1977)
The Site Wind Speed Vs = 27.78 x 1.0215 x 1 x 1 x 1= 28.38 m/sec.
The Effective Wind Speed Ve = Vs x Sb (Ref Clause 2.2.3)
Sb

= 1.90 + (1.96-1.90/30-20) x (21.50-20.00)

Sb

= 1.909 (Ref Table -4 of BS 6399)

Ve

= 1.909 x 28.38 = 54.18 m/sec

2

Dynamic Pressure Qs = 0.613 x 54.18 = 1.799 KN/m (Ref Clause 3.1.2 - BS6399) Net
Pressure Coefficients (Cp) (Ref Table 21 of BS 6399)

Without Returns Corners :

Zone B

= 2.10

Wind Forces are acting on the sign Board : (Cp x Qs)

Zone B

= 2.10 x 1.799

Wind Load on Purlin

= 3.78 KN/m

= 1.23 x 3.78 = 4.649 KN/m

Moment Resistance :
The compression flange is fully restrained over the sagging moment region but
it is unrestrained over the hogging moment region, that is, over the internal support. How
ever unrestrained length is very short and lateral torsional buckling is not critical. The
moment resistance of the restrained beam is :
Mcy = Zyr x py
= 138981.41 x 304.35
= 42.29 KNm > 19.865 KNm.
Hence OK .
Shear Resistance :
Shear yield strength (pv)

Average shear Stress fv = (20.245 x 1000) / 750 = 26.99N/mm < 144 N/mm
Hence OK
Web Crashing at end support :

Hence OK

Maximum Allowable Deflection
